$1.14 million Kangaroo Bay skate park worth the wait AFTER more than five years in the making, the new $1.14 million Kanga- roo Bay skate park has been declared officially open. The state-of-the-art facility was unveiled on Sunday 3 April during a special community event that included skating demonstrations, local musicians and children’s activities. Designed by a local designer with input by the local skating fraternity, the skate park, which has been built to national and international scale, will have the potential to host major competitions. It includes an international standard competition street course and bowl, and a stage to be used for the council’s Carols by Candlelight and other events. Clarence Mayor Doug Chipman said it was exciting to see the skate park finally come to fruition after working with young members of the commu- nity, the skating fraternity and sporting groups. April 2016 23 Eastern Shore Sun A FINANCIAL MOMENT Consider annuities in the mix With annuities, you can choose the timeframe of the products – 10 or 20 years, for example. Or you can choose a product that will pay you income for the rest of your life. There is also a range of payment options available to investors. For instance, you can choose to receive income from your annuity on a monthly, quarterly, six-monthly or annual basis, depending on how you wish to structure your finances and your retirement income needs. Some annuities also offer an in- dexation option to help counter the effect of inflation. These products deliver a gradually higher income over time, so that the money you have to spend doesn’t reduce as inflation increases. The way that annuities work, when you invest in this product, your money is pooled in a statutory fund with other investors. Generally, the fund will invest in fixed income assets such as cash and property, as well as other assets such as infra- structure and some shares. Profes- sional asset managers are responsi- ble for deciding how the money is invested. In the past, investors were cau- tious about annuities because there was a risk that you might invest a substantial amount in the product and then die before the end of its term, reducing the value of your estate. But these products have evolved over time. Now, if you invest in an WHEN you leave work for the and the options available to you to to see a reduction in their age you are a couple without your own annuity and die the day after taking last time it’s important to have make the most of your retirement pension – in some cases to zero – home with assets valued at more it out, your estate will receive a confidence you have set up your nest egg. as a result of the increased taper than $575,000 your pension is known amount back (that you spec- finances so you have enough mon- First, let’s take a look at the rate. likely to be affected. ify when taking out an annuity). ey to cover your basic expenses, as upcoming changes and how they If you are concerned about how There is a range of annuities in well as a little left over for extras, might affect you.
