Actual wagon wheel Route ruts, emigrant camps, Pony Express stations, and other places of interest can be visited at the sites listed in this guide. Driving directions to the sites are provided from major highways and nearby towns. To follow overland trail routes between sites, follow the Auto Tour Route highway signs. Generally, local brochures and guides are also available. Entrance and parking fees may be charged at some locations, and hours may vary at the discretion of site administrators. Large groups are encouraged to make prior arrangements for tours, where tours are available. Please respect private property by staying in public areas, and help protect our national heritage by leaving trail resources undisturbed.     THE OREGON TRAIL Many people who migrated to the western part of the United States took a major route known as the Oregon Trail. Hundreds of thousands of people traveled westward on the trail from 1841 to 1869. Many made the journey in large covered wagon trains. ROUTE The Oregon Trail stretched around 2,000 miles, starting in Independence, Missouri and ending in Oregon City, Oregon. The route went through six different states including Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho, and Oregon. Travelers were faced with rough terrain like the Rocky Mountains and Sierra Nevada Mountains. It took about 5 months to make the journey along the Oregon Trail. MOTIVATION Why leave home and travel 2,000 miles to settle unknown land? Many pioneers sought to escape overcrowding and poverty in their cities in the eastern United States. Some were escaping crimes or creditors. Others wanted land of their own, made possible by the Homestead Act, which allowed all citizens to obtain 160 acres for free. Some were encouraged to join friends or family who had already moved west. WAGONS Covered wagons were the main vehicle used to carry pioneers’ belongings. Most pioneers purchased modified or manufactured wagons designed for the trip. Wagons were sometimes known as “Prairie Schooners” because they were like boats traveling over the prairies of the western United States. The wagons were made from wood. Iron was placed around the wheels, like tires. Waterproof cotton or linen canvas was used to make wagon covers. Most wagons were around 10 feet long and four feet wide. Oxen were typically used to pull the wagons.

Let’s set the stage (sorry). Stagecoaches are defined as public conveyances that carry mail, express, and/or passengers. The term “stage” originally referred to the distance between stages or stations on a route. Now, let’s get to the problem. In 1850, two years after its gold rush began in 1848, California became the 31st state of the Union, separated from the rest of the country by the vast expanse of the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains. Mail delivery to California from the East took at least a month and a half by steamship and pack animal across Panama. From the beginning, California pressured the U. S. Government to provide faster mail service. It took five more years for military expeditions and surveyors to establish a trail across the southwestern U.S. that stagecoaches could use year round for overland mail delivery.

The Greater Jeffersontown Historical Society meetings are held on the first Monday of the even numbered months of the year. Everyone is encouraged to attend to help guide and grow the Society. August Meeting Kentucky’s Native History - Persistent Myths and Stereotypes. The many cultural contributions Native Americans have made throughout Kentucky’s history, as well as the impact of lingering stereotypes. The program will be presented by Tressa Brown, who received her B.A. in Biology and Anthropology at Transylvania University and her M.A. in Anthropology from Arizona State University. She is currently the coordinator for the Kentucky Native American Heritage Commission and the Kentucky African American Heritage Commission. She has worked for the past 25 years providing Native American educational programming for schools and the public, both in her current position as well as in her previous position as Curator at the Salato Wildlife Education Center. Her primary focus has been to identify the stereotypes and myths about Native Americans in general and Kentucky’s Native people in particular. Her position at KHC is to provide accurate information to educators and the public about the diversity of Native cultures as well as the issues affecting Native people in contemporary society.
