More Than Mrs Robinson: Citizenship Schools in Lowcountry South Carolina and Savannah, Georgia, 1957-1970 (A Dissertation submitted in requirement for the Degree of Doctor in Philosophy, The University of Nottingham, October 2009) Clare Russell 1 Abstract The first ―citizenship school‖ (a literacy class that taught adults to read and write in order that they could register to vote) was established by Highlander Folk School of Monteagle, Tennessee on Johns Island, South Carolina in 1957. Within three years, the schools were extended across the neighboring Sea Islands, to mainland Charleston and to Savannah, Georgia. In 1961, after Highlander faced legal challenges to its future, it transferred the schools to the fledgling Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), who extended the program across the South. Historians have made far-reaching claims for the successes and benefits of the schools. For example, they claim that they recruited inexperienced but committed people and raised them to the status of community leaders; that they encouraged civic cooperation and political activism and formed the ―foundation on which the civil rights movement‖ was built and they argue that the schools were an unprecedented opportunity for women to develop as activists and as leaders. Yet, they base these claims on certain myths about the schools: that the first teacher Bernice Robinson was an inexperienced and uneducated teacher, that her class was a blueprint for similar ones and that Highlander bequeathed its educational philosophy to the SCLC program. They make claims about female participation without analyzing the gender composition of classes. This dissertation challenges these assumptions by comparing and contrasting programs established in Lowcountry South Carolina and in Savannah. -

Born in Atlanta and raised in Washington DC, she comes from a musical—and political—family. Both her parents were civil rights activists in the 1960s, and founding members of The Freedom Singers, a folk group that toured the country to teach people about civil rights through song as part of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Her mother, Bernice Johnson Reagon, is also a founder of the legendary a cappella group, Sweet Honey in the Rock. Toshi has been performing since she was 17 years old. Her career really launched when Lenny Kravitz chose her, straight out of college, to open for him on his first world tour. Some of Toshi’s proudest moments include playing for her godfather Pete Seeger’s 90th birthday celebration at Madison Square Garden, and performing with the Freedom Singers at the White House, in a tribute to the music of the civil rights movement. As a composer and producer, Toshi has created original scores for dance works, collaborated on two contemporary operas, served as producer on multiple albums, and has had her own work featured in films and TV soundtracks, including HBO and PBS programs. BIGLovely did its first performance as a band in 1996. -

The Civil War Memorial Task Force reconvened in June 2020 to consider supplementary interpretative signage for the Civil War Memorial site. The enclosed report was prepared in September 2020 following the conclusion of a series of meetings held between June and September 2020 during which they deliberated and came to a consensus on a series of recommendations that support and complement their original recommendations provided to the Savannah City Council in December 2017 (adopted by City Council in February 2018). The report addresses recommended next steps for City Council to undertake before considering the recommendations in a formal vote to ensure broad public engagement and citizen input. A brief historical summary of Forsyth Park and the Civil War Memorial site is also included to provide historical context to the recommendations of the Task Force. -

What I want to get, as you all know, is conversation about music and the Movement. And what I'm going to do—I'm not giving elaborate introductions. I'm going to go around the table and name who's here for the record, for the recorded record. Beyond that, I will depend on each one of you in your first, in this first round of comments to introduce yourselves however you wish. To the extent that I feel it necessary, I will prod you if I feel you've left something out that I think is important, which is one of the prerogatives of the moderator. [Laughs] Other than that, it's pretty loose going around the table—and this will be the order in which we'll also speak—Chuck Neblett, Hollis Watkins, Worth Long, Candie Carawan, Bettie Mae Fikes. Butler’s Parable of the Sower Created by Toshi Reagon and Bernice Johnson Reagon Based on the novels Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents by Octavia E. Butler, this genre-defying work of theater features a powerhouse ensemble of 20 singers, actors, and musicians. It harnesses 200 years of black musical tradition to bring Butler’s acclaimed science fiction books to life in song. Written by singer, composer and producer Toshi Reagon in collaboration with her mother, Bernice Johnson Rea- gon (song leader, composer, scholar, social activist, and founder of Sweet Honey in the Rock), Parable of the Sower is a mesmerizing theatrical work of rare power and beauty. Going, Going, Gone: Emotions of Slavery by Karen Murphy On March 2 and 3, 1859, the largest slave auction in American history was held in Savannah, Georgia. Over 400 slaves were sold from the plantation of Pierce Butler in order to pay his gambling debts. During the sale, torrential rains poured down. When the auction ended, the sun appeared in the sky. The sale became known as “The Weeping Time”. Different viewpoints were held about slavery in the United States. During an interdisciplinary study of the Civil War in social studies class, students will read a book that was written based on a newspaper article available from the Library of Congress. After reading the novel and the primary source, students will illustrate a scene from the book and provide captions for the thoughts of each person at a slave auction. --- Overview------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Subject: Social Studies/U.S. History/ Reading Time Required: One week to read the book plus three 45 minute class sessions Grade Range: 6-8 Understanding Goal: Students will understand what the author means when he says “History is not only an accounting of what happened when and where.
