May I never cease to emulate our heavenly patron and with alacrity fol- low in the footsteps of Your Only-begotten Son, Who is our Alpha and Omega, our Beginning and End. Impress, O Lord, upon my heart the Sign of Your Holy Cross, and grant that I may bear it honourably and dutifully, in total fealty to You and to the One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic and Roman Church, and to the Vicar of your Son. Bless our Grand Master, His Family and Household, and all our Knights and Dames. Imbue me, moreover, with the particular grace of preserving in diligent charity toward my neighbour, and especially to the sick, the needy, and the abandoned. All this, Heavenly Father, I beg by the power of the Most Holy Cross upon which throne He Who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life did reign, and to Whom with You in the life-giving Holy Spirit be ascribed all honour, glo- ry and power, sovereignty and blessing both now and forevermore. Amen. Most Holy Mother, Virgin most compassionate, who did stand at the Foot of the Cross, pray for us that we may be made worthy of the fruits of Your Son’s Passion, Death and Resurrection. Esmond Butler, Secretary General of the Order of Military Merit to Corporal R. L. Mailloux, I 3 December 1972 nlike the Order of Canada, which underwent a significant structural change five years after being established, the changes made to the Order of Military U Merit since 1972 have been largely administrative. Following the Order of Canada structure and general ethos has served the Order of Military Merit well. Other developments, such as the change in insignia worn on undress ribbons, the adoption of a motto for the Order and the creation of the Order of Military Merit paperweight, are examined in Chapter Four. With the ink on the Letters Patent and Constitution of the Order dry, The Queen and Prime Minister having signed in the appropriate places, and the Great Seal affixed thereunto, the Order had come into being, but not to life. In the beginning, the Order consisted of the Sovereign and two members: the Governor General as Chancellor and a Commander of the Order, and the Chief of the Defence Staff as Principal Commander and a similarly newly minted Commander of the Order. The first act of Governor General Roland Michener as Chancellor of the Order was to appoint his Secretary, Esmond Butler, to serve "as a member of the Advisory Committee of the Order." 127 Butler would continue to play a significant role in the early development of the Order, along with future Chief of the Defence Staff General Jacques A.

Mackie Previously in this journal I described how Canada has received armorial law from England.1 Yet as the former Lord Lyon King of Arms, Lyon Blair, observed, 'The legislation creating the Canadian heraldic office allows them to create arms which are subject to "the law of Canada". Now, Canada has a series of differing laws, emanating from each province, some based on French legal principles, and others on English legal principles.2 The question then arises, does this series of differing laws affect the law of arms of Canada? To answer this question, I will first examine just what laws of arms the provinces of Canada have received (and, incidentally, whether their courts are empowered to administer these laws).

It was great to see more 5 Heraldic Art members and guests out to this education day and it shows that this Grant of Arms in 6 annual event is gaining interest. Ontario 2015 The day started out with Mr. The Canadian Jonathan Lofft, providing a lecture 7 Herald’s Medallion on “Three Canadian Seals Not by the Wyons; Decolonising Sir Books for reference 8 Conrad Swan’s Sigillography”. This was followed by Mr. Derwin Mak, speaking on “The Coat of Arms of the Korean Empire from 1901-1903”. After everyone returned from lunch in the city we had the opportunity to hear from Dr. D’Arcy Boulton, FRHSC, AIH who provided a very visually pleasing presentation on “Combining Personal Arms in England before 1625”. Finishing off our academic day together Canon David Bowyer, FRHSC provided a very interesting lecture on “Sacred Brollies & Holy Bumbershoots” What a day was had by all and if you had to miss this year’s Heraldic Studies Day hopefully you will be able to join us next year for what we can only assume will be another very successful day of he- raldic learning.

Nonetheless, our Society will assiduously press on despite the forecast of weather. Our Membership Secretary, David Broomfield has recorded a fascinating detail stemming from the Vestry in Trinity College as a part of our Heraldic Survey to celebrate Cambridge’s 800 th Anniversary. His findings are meticulously uncovered in this term’s issue as “The Seckford Monument”. We would like to invite other members to inform us of any other intriguing details that might be of interest for the Heraldic Survey related to the University of Cambridge and Colleges. We were also honoured to welcome two special speakers this past term. The first was Dr Vittoria Feola, Fellow at ULB in Brussels, Belgium and visiting fellow at Goldsmith College at the University of London. Dr Feola gave this year’s Mountbatten Commemorative Lecture on “The Court of Chivalry in Stuart Heraldry” which was a supplement to her PhD research on "Elias Ashmole and the uses of Antiquity" .
