    “REQUIEM AETERNAM DONA EIS DOMINE” 2014 OBITUARIES OBITUARIES Philip German-Ribon (30) Philip German- Ribon died on the 16th September aged 101 and at the time of his passing was our oldest OB. He was the youngest of three brothers who came to Beaumont the sons of Roberto. His Grandfather had been the Bolivian Ambassador in London and Paris and he was born in 1912 at their residence in the Cromwell road. Later he moved to Paris and enjoyed holidays at their house in Biarritz. The family were of Spanish origin and there is still a street in Seville named after them but they then moved to Columbia in the 18th century and took part in the liberation of South America with Simon Bolivar; one of Philip’s ancestors was shot by the Spanish as a traitor. In Bolivia they had large mining interests and were involved politically in the administration of the country. Philip though spent most of his childhood in England and his parents had a home near Tunbridge Wells and his father worked in London involved with specialist metals such as bismuth and tin which brought them into involvement with the Wolffs and the London Metal Market. Philip and his brothers were sent to Wagners in Queens Gate where Philip made a strong friendship with John de Laszlo, the son of Philip the society artist. It was during this period that as a young boy Philip visited 11 Downing Street where de Laszlo was painting Sir Austen Chamberlain who also happened also to be a friend of Philip’s parents.

This was followed by Mr. Derwin Mak, speaking on “The Coat of Arms of the Korean Empire from 1901-1903”. After everyone returned from lunch in the city we had the opportunity to hear from Dr. D’Arcy Boulton, FRHSC, AIH who provided a very visually pleasing presentation on “Combining Personal Arms in England before 1625”. Finishing off our academic day together Canon David Bowyer, FRHSC provided a very interesting lecture on “Sacred Brollies & Holy Bumbershoots” What a day was had by all and if you had to miss this year’s Heraldic Studies Day hopefully you will be able to join us next year for what we can only assume will be another very successful day of he- raldic learning.

At this point Mr Smith will cease being Acting Assistant Headteacher and Miss Kiernan will join Mrs Evans in Year 3. Taster Day On Monday 14 th July all the children will be spending most of the day with their new teachers in their new classrooms. The new and current staff will be on the playground from 8.40am in case you would like an opportunity to meet them and introduce yourselves.

Our Membership Secretary, David Broomfield has recorded a fascinating detail stemming from the Vestry in Trinity College as a part of our Heraldic Survey to celebrate Cambridge’s 800 th Anniversary. His findings are meticulously uncovered in this term’s issue as “The Seckford Monument”. We would like to invite other members to inform us of any other intriguing details that might be of interest for the Heraldic Survey related to the University of Cambridge and Colleges. We were also honoured to welcome two special speakers this past term. The first was Dr Vittoria Feola, Fellow at ULB in Brussels, Belgium and visiting fellow at Goldsmith College at the University of London. Dr Feola gave this year’s Mountbatten Commemorative Lecture on “The Court of Chivalry in Stuart Heraldry” which was a supplement to her PhD research on "Elias Ashmole and the uses of Antiquity" .
