The Cuban films I examine are: Retrato de Teresa (1979) and De Cierta Manera (1964), the short “Julia” from Mujer Transparente (1990) and from Brazil I work with the films Gabriela (1983) and A Hora da Estrela (1984.) All of the films have a protagonist that is a woman, and all were successful in the box office and had some international recognition. The films have strong female protagonists and share similar socio-political contexts- the socialist government in Cuba and the military dictatorship in Brazil, as well as a time period marked by social unrest as women‟s rights groups were very active in both countries. My hypothesis is that although these films were commercially successful, groundbreaking and innovative; they ultimately were marked by some of the gendered contradictions and the feminist questionings of their time. In fact, my analysis reveals that, although they each raise many issues and questions about an egalitarian society for both men and women, they fall short in terms of a progressive politics of gender. A notable exception, the film A Hora da Estrela provides a striking difference to the other films. 9 INTRODUCTION: In general terms, what was at stake in Cuba‟s revolution in 1959 and the Brazilian dictatorship in 1964 was nothing less than the struggle to define the terms through which the country would be integrated into an increasingly global political economy. Although following different sociopolitical and economic models, Cuba and Brazil implemented structural adjustment policies that impacted all sectors of the population. As a means to gain support for the reforms and legitimize their presence in power, Fidel Castro and the military regime in Brazil employed populist strategies and nationalist policies in addition to arrests, murders, kidnappings, and censorship against those who criticized and opposed the regime. As in many other Latin American countries, the gendered dimensions of these policies had a strong impact on women‟s lives. This period was also marked by the increasing presence of films that would reflect on the state of the nation. Thus we have this study. The purpose of this dissertation is to study women‟s representation and the contention of space in contemporary Brazilian and Cuban films, in order to analyze the way in which the films reflect societal values regarding gender roles and, consequently the way the nation is represented. To be more specific, the goal is to compare films produced both in Cuba and Brazil from 1960 to 1990‟s – a time characterized by a boom in film production. The study consists of two films selected from each country and an additional short is analyzed in the case of Cuba. One of the films is produced by a male director and one by a woman, and the short is directed by a woman. All of the films have

I critically assess such claims through a close reading of the films of the Spanish „sex and horror‟ specialist Jess Franco. My textual and contextual analysis shows that Franco‟s films are shaped by inter-relationships between authorship, international genre codes and the economic and ideological conditions of exploitation cinema. Within these conditions, Franco‟s treatment of „aberrant‟ and gothic desiring subjectivities appears contradictory. Contestation and critique can, for example, be found in Franco‟s portrayal of emasculated male characters, and his female vampires may offer opportunities for resistant appropriation.

    The Cinema of Virtuality: The Untimely Avant-Garde of Matsumoto Toshio by Joshua Scammell A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Film Studies Carleton University OTTAWA, Ontario © 2016, Joshua Scammell Abstract: Scholarship on the avant-garde in Japanese cinema tends to focus on the 1960s. Many scholars believe that the avant-garde vanishes from Japanese cinema in the early 1970s. This study aims to disrupt such narratives with the example of filmmaker/theorist Matsumoto Toshio. Matsumoto is one of the key figures of the 1960s political avant-garde, and this study argues that his 1970s films should also be considered part of the avant-garde. Following Yuriko Furuhata who calls the avant-garde of the 1960s “the cinema of actuality,” this thesis calls the avant-garde of the 1970s “the cinema of virtuality.” The cinema of virtuality will be seen to emphasize a particular type of contiguity with the spectator. This strategy will be discussed in relation to four of Matsumoto’s short films: Nishijin (1961), For the Damaged Right Eye (1968), Atman (1975), and Sway (1985) and a brief discussion of Funeral Parade of Roses (1969). ii Acknowledgements: In the classical world, artists often had their pupils do the actual work, while they took all the credit for the original idea.     ABSENCES AND (IM)POSSIBILITIES traces of an experimental cinema in Ireland PROGRAMME NOTES 1. HISTORICAL PROLOGUE SACKVILLE STREET (1897, 50secs, b&w, 35mm), Alexandre Promio, Lumière Brothers In 1897, Alexandre Promio, an agent of the Lumière Brothers, visited Ireland to get some footage of Dublin and Belfast at the very beginnings of cinema. This 50 second actuality film depicts a diagonal view of O’Connell Street, known at the time as Sackville Street. Following a predominantly realist approach, the Lumières – responsible for the birth of cinema in the 1890s – inaugurated ‘actuality cinema’, a non-fiction film genre consisting of the depiction of everyday life without the argumentative structure distinctive of documentary. Alexandre Promio was taken on by the Lumière firm in 1896 and became responsible for the training of the Cinématographe operators who were to exhibit the machine the world over. YOUGHAL CLOCK TOWER (1910, 30secs, b&w, 35mm), James Horgan Youghal Clock Tower is a light hearted and playful exploration of the possibilities of animation in its infancy. Depicting the well-known landmark dancing into frame, the clock gate comes to life, spinning and dancing through the main street of the Cork town. A representation of the clock tower is given as a trophy for best first animation at the Galway Film Fleadh every year. James Horgan was one of the pioneers of filmmaking and animation technique in Ireland, beginning to experiment in stop motion animation as early as 1909. BY ACCIDENT (1930, 20mins, b&w, 16mm), Norris Davidson By Accident, the first film by Davidson, is a rare example of independent film production from the early years of the Irish state, and one of the first films to emerge from the group Irish Amateur Films.
