International Journal of Multidisciplinary Approach and Studies ISSN NO:: 2348 – 537X Indian cinema’s future at Oscars Paromita Gupta DSJ, University of Delhi, Delhi, India ABSTRACT Cinema is the reflection of our society. It acts as a mirror by reflecting the reality of our societies. Just like any other professional field, cinema is also bestowed with the recognition for who or what is the best among all. This comes in various formats including the pan world accepted and celebrated Academy Awards or Oscars. As per 2018 report by Statista, over 5,823 films were produced by leading film markets including India and China. From 1948 till 2019, Italy has topped the chart by winning 11 best International Feature Film, followed by France with 9 wins, while Mexico and South Korea became the newest member with Roma in 2018 and Parasite in 2019 respectively. Indian cinema is the world's largest film industry in terms of film production, with an annual output of 1,813 feature films as of 2018, and Bollywood is its largest film producer, with 364 Hindi films produced annually as of 2017. The Awards has faced backlash for lack of diversity which is based on the statistics since 1929. To honour the foreign language films, the Special Achievement/Honorary Award was introduced in 1947. These awards, however, were not handed out on a regular basis (no award was given in 1953), and were not competitive since there were no nominees but simply one winning film per year. -

Scopus id 56659374000 Abstract In the last decade a new kind of Tamil film was noticed, widely celebrated as new wave, neo-noir, ‘Madurai genre’ and even as a backlash to the ‘Rasigar Mandram’(Fan Clubs) Stars of mainstream cinema. The rise of such films was in itself an achievement considering the commercial stranglehold of the politico-cultural ecosystem in the Tamil film industry. The new directors moved away from the bubble of ‘mass scene’(grand super hero entry scene) appearances, political innuendos, super star ‘punch’ dialogues and fan club worship of pouring milk on opening day giant-size ‘cutouts’. What the new Tamil films did portray were marginalized, subaltern low-caste characters with aspirations built around grim storylines, expository dialogues and dark themes. This article endeavors to thematically analyse three ‘new wave’ Tamil films and trace the underlying strains of a new generation narrative drawn out from the dirty underbelly of ‘post- Dravidian Rajni-persona Superstar cinema’. Journal of the Nanzan Academic Society Humanities and Natural Sciences (20), 121―138, 2020, June 121 The Paradigm shifts in the Portrayal of Caste in Tamil Cinema and its impact on the Tamil Society Antony SUSAIRAJ Abstract The film industries of India, among the largest in the world, can be broadly classified into two: one is the Bollywood Industry, the Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai, and the other is a number of regional film industries, which produce films in different languages of India. This article analyses the portrayal of caste in Tamil cinema, one of the regional film industries based in Tamil Nadu, South India. Discrimination based on caste is one of the fundamental and most profound problems in India since it determines one’s status, lifestyle, profession, and one’s entire life. Moreover, it is also the source of conflict and discrimination among people of different castes. Tamil cinema has produced many films which deal with the caste system in Tamil Nadu. There have been many paradigm shifts in the portrayal of caste in the history of Tamil cinema in terms of higher castes, lower castes, inter-castes, and subaltern classes. This paper examines the paradigm shifts in portrayal of caste in different Tamil films in different periods of the history of Tamil cinema and its impact on the Tamil society. 16 Women as Software Engineers in Indian Tamil Cinema Joyojeet Pal INTRODUCTION Prior to the 2010 World Classical Tamil Conference1 in Coimbatore, a music video called “Semmozhiyaan Tamil Mozhiyaan” made its way to television networks across Tamil Nadu. The video was shot by Gautham Menon and had music composed by A. R. Rehman – both leading figures in the Tamil film industry at the time, with lyrics penned by the then chief minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) headman Muthuvl Karunanidhi. The song was intended as an anthem for the conference, but soon started being referred to as the state anthem. The visuals of the music video had an anthem feel, in that they show- cased the state and its people, featuring several iconic images from ancient tablets of classical Tamil text to modern urban infrastructure, lush land- scape images, and a range of well-known performers making cameo appearances through the song. Images of a harmonious society included a wedding, religious ceremonies, classical performances, and children being taught in school. Outside of the performances themselves, there are only three images of vocations: a farmer, a teacher, and a computer programmer. The selection of the images is deliberate, and captures the political message of DMK through the anthem – earth, knowledge, and modernity. The computer programmer is shown as a young middle-class woman, awed by the environment in which the company is housed, but instantly content with her surroundings as she settles into her cubicle. As she enters the building, others entering around her are women in salwaar kameezes like her, and around her cubicle we also see women at work.
