This guide sets the precedence for further publications, processes, and events which will define Blanche Ely High School. Please review this guide so that you can take advantage of all we have to offer and be able to make an informed decision about the course selections that will impact your future. Incoming freshmen will be able to select an ICAN/NAF Academy that will prepare them for college and career as defined by Blanche Ely High School’s motto, “Destination Excellence.” Blanche Ely High School focuses on preparing our students to meet the demands of our ever-changing, fast-paced world. The faculty and staff are unquestionably qualified to challenge your intellect and nurture your passions to ensure you are successful not only academically but socially and emotionally. Ninety-six percent of Blanche Ely’s magnet students attend four-year universities after graduation. We are ranked the highest in Broward County and among the top high schools in the State of Florida with the highest passing rate on the Industry Certification Exams. We house four (4) National Academy Foundation (NAF) programs, which prepare students in the fields of Hospitality and Tourism, Information Technology, Finance, and Health Sciences. Through these programs, students have the opportunity to participate in paid internships with local business partners. In addition to NAF, we will provide wall-to-wall career opportunities for our students, as a result of an I-CAN grant. This will encompass each child being enrolled in a specific pathway (Academy) to capitalize on their passion and provide opportunities for them to earn Industry Certification and college credits before they leave high school. BEHS is excite to offer several new electives as we begin this journey. Our Magnet Programs continue to provide challenging academic and career-focused offerings to our students. The SCIENCE/PRE-ENGINEERING Program is a four-year accelerated themed program for select students who choose to pursue careers requiring pre-college foundations in the fields of engineering, science, mathematics, architecture, or technology. To meet their individual goals, students select a major career interest and are given college planning and guidance throughout their four years. The MEDICAL SCIENCES Program is an innovative high school program which offers qualified students an exciting opportunity to pursue a unique curriculum designed to prepare them for college and a career in the medical field. The PRACTICAL NURSING Program is part of the Broward County Practical Nursing Program. This is the only on-campus Practical Nursing Program in a comprehensive high school in the State of Florida. Students who qualify for this program and successfully complete it qualify to take the Florida State Board of Nursing licensing exam (NCLEX) to become Licensed Practical Nurses. At Blanche Ely High School, we strive to meet the individual needs of all students, academically, socially, emotionally, and career-wise. I encourage you to choose a demanding course of study, take full advantage of Honors, Dual Enrollment, and Advanced Placement courses. With full implementation of the Florida Standards, you will be College and Career Ready when you graduate from Blanche Ely High School. Families should consider the educational benefits of each program and choose the program that will best prepare the student for his or her postsecondary education or career plan. Families and students should work with their school counselor on a regular basis to get more information about graduation options, financial aid opportunities, acceleration programs, and college or career plans to help make this important decision. Please note that each student is governed by the policies from the year in which they first entered ninth grade. This year of high school entry determines the student’s “cohort.” Each cohort has different graduation requirements. The charts on the following pages should be used as a guide when planning your academic program. It is very important that students become aware of the specific graduation requirements for their diploma option and cohort. Early High School Graduation A high school student who pursues the four-year 24-credit or 18 credit ACCEL high school graduation program may have the option to participate in early graduation (graduating in less than 8 semesters). A student who completes a minimum of 24 (or 18 for ACCEL) credits, achieves a cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale, completes the service learning requirement (not required for ACCEL) and earns a passing score on the statewide assessments required for high school graduation may have this option outlined in s. 1003.4281, F.S. A student who graduates early may continue to participate in school activities and social events and attend and participate in graduation events with

    July 2018 Review of Graduate Passage Rates on the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Licensure Examination: Calendar Year 2017 At a Glance To be granted a license to practice as a registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN) in Florida, in addition to successful graduation from an education program candidates must successfully pass the Nursing Licensure Examination specific to their program. The licensure examination passage rates for students who graduated from either an associate degree, bachelor degree, or license practical degree program varied by program type. Bachelor degree graduates performed the best followed by licensed practical nurse graduates with associate degree graduates performing at the lowest level. Florida’s combined (associate and bachelor degree) statewide passage rate for RNs was 73.99% compared to 87.12% nationally, ranking Florida the lowest among the 50 states and District of Columbia. Of the 160 associate degree RN programs, more than half (56.88%) had a passage rate more than 10% below the national average. Of the 50 bachelor degree RN programs, 19 (38%) had a passage rate more than 10% below the national average. Florida’s LPN passage rate was 75.11% compared to 83.85% nationally, ranking Florida 47th out of 50 states. Of the 143 LPN programs, 63 (44%) had passage rates more than 10% below the national average. Of the 353 nursing programs in Florida, 85 (24%) are classified as public while 268 (76%) can be classified as private. In each case, the average NCLEX passage rate of public programs was above that of the national average.
