Regionallst PAINTING and AMERICAN STUDIES Regionalism
REGiONALlST PAINTING AND AMERICAN STUDIES KENNETH J. LABUDDE Regionalism in American painting brings to mind immediately the period of the 1930's when the Middlewesterners JohnSteuart Curry, Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton enjoyed great reputation as the_ painters of Ameri can art. Curry, the Kansan; Benton, the Missourian; and Wood, the Iowan, each wandered off to New York, to Paris, to the great world of art, but each came home again to Kansas City, Cedar Rapids and Madison, Wisconsin. Only one of the three, Benton, is still living. At the recent dedication of his "Independence and the Opening of the West" in the Truman Library the ar tist declared it was his last big work, for scaffold painting takes too great a toll on a man now 72. Upon this occasion he enjoyed the acclaim of those gathered, but as a shrewdly intelligent, even intellectual man, he may have reflected that Wood and Curry, both dead foi* close to twenty years now, are slipping into obscur ity except in the region of the United States which they celebrated. Collec tors, whether institutional or private, who have the means and the interests to be a part of the great world have gone on to other painters. There are those who will say so much the worse for them, but I am content not to dwell on that issue but to speculate instead about art in our culture and the uses of art in cultural studies. I will explain that I am not convinced by those who hold with the conspir acy theory of art history, whether it be a Thomas Craven of yesterday or a John Canaday of today. -

Juley & Son Collection, Smithsonian American Art Museum BIOGRAPHY John Steuart Curry was one of the three major practitioners of American regionalist painting, along with Thomas Hart Benton (American, 1889 - 1975) and Grant Wood (American, 1891 - 1942). Curry was born on a farm near Dunavant, Kansas, on November 14, 1897. His parents had traveled to Europe on their honeymoon, and his mother, Margaret, returned with prints of European masterworks that hung on the walls of the family home. She enrolled her son in art lessons at a young age, and his family supported his decision to drop out of high school in 1916 to study art. Curry worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad and attended the Kansas City Art Institute for a month before moving to Chicago, where he studied at the Art Institute for two years. In 1918 he enrolled at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. Curry decided to pursue commercial illustration, and in 1919 he began to study with illustrator Harvey Dunn in Tenafly, New Jersey. From 1921 to 1926, Curry’s illustrations appeared in publications such as the Saturday Evening Post and Boy’s Life. In 1923, while living in New York City, he married Clara Derrick; shortly thereafter he bought a studio at Otter Ponds near the art colony in Westport, Connecticut. In 1926 Curry stopped producing illustrations and left for Paris, where he took classes in drawing with the Russian teacher Vasili Shukhaev and studied old master paintings at the Louvre. -

1 VIOLET OAKLEY: PENNSYLVANIA’S PREMIERE MURALIST Susan Hamburger Paper and slide presentation Pennsylvania Historical Association October 14, 1995 [SLIDE 1] Violet Oakley--a versatile portraitist, illustrator, stained glass artisan, and muralist--earned a reputation as the first American woman artist to succeed in the predominantly-male architectural field of mural decoration. Her strong commitment to her religion and world peace influenced her art as well as her life. [SLIDE 2] Oakley was born in Bergen Heights, New Jersey, to the artistic family of Arthur Edmund Oakley and Cornelia Swain Oakley. Both of her grandfathers, George Oakley and William Swain, belonged to the National Academy of Design and two of her aunts studied painting in Munich with Frank Duveneck. She believed that her compulsion to draw was “hereditary and chronic.” She once commented that she must have been “a monk in some earlier state of existence....The abbesses and sisters were too busy nursing the sick and doing fine needleworks. I never heard of them illuminating manuscripts. I am quite sure I was a monk.” 1 The youngest of three children, Violet followed her sisters Cornelia and Hester in learning the acceptable feminine skills of poetry writing, piano playing, 2 and sketching. While Hester attended Vassar College, Violet’s asthma prevented her from obtaining a college education which her parents thought too rigorous for her physical condition. She never let the asthma impede her artistic education or career. In 1892, at the age of eighteen, Oakley commuted to New York City to study at the Art Students’ League with Irving R. -

JULIA MARGARET CAMERON’S PHOTOGRAPHS AS PAINTINGS Winnie Wu ART 475: History of Photography November 30th, 2017 !1 Julia Margaret Cameron did not have a camera until she was forty-eight, given to her by her daughter and son-in-law.1 She did not have mechanical expertise, scientific knowledge, or practical experience in the arts. She was a wife of a philosopher and a mother of seven children.2 Through her husband’s society however, she was in contact with some of the preeminent Victorian thinkers and artists. -

Once upon a time, the latest book illustrated by Howard Pyle (1853–1910) was on every American child’s wish list. In the meantime, youngsters could enjoy his vivid portrayals of history and legend in the pages of St. Nicholas, Everybody’s, Collier’s, Century, Scribner’s, and Harper’s magazines. Though not a household name today, Pyle was the preeminent illustrator of the Gilded Age, and his visual interpretations of the American Revolution, Robin Hood and his Merry Men, the Knights of the Round Table, and a motley crew of pirates were indelibly printed on the imaginations of several generations. Now a new book published in conjunction with the centenary of Howard Pyle’s death has redis- covered this forgotten icon of the popular culture. The subject is custom-made for authors Jill P. May, professor of literacy and language, and Robert E. May, professor of history (both at Purdue University), who bring to this work their expertise in fields beyond the history of art. This is not a coffee-table book but the first extensively documented biography of Howard Pyle. The authors combed through numerous archives and museum collections and wove their findings into a fluent narrative that documents Pyle’s personal life and his career as an illus- trator, author, and teacher. The frequent use of quotations from letters re-creates the intimate conversations between Pyle and his wide circle of colleagues and students, revealing the artist’s exuberant personality and manic energy. -

Since opening his first art foundry in the late 1960s, Polich has worked closely with the most significant artists of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. His foundries—Tallix (1970–2006), Polich of Polich’s energy and invention, Art Works (1995–2006), and Polich dedication to craft, and Tallix (2006–present)—have produced entrepreneurial acumen on the renowned artworks like Jeff Koons’ work of artists. As an art fabricator, gleaming stainless steel Rabbit (1986) and Polich remains behind the scenes, Louise Bourgeois’ imposing 30-foot tall his work subsumed into the careers spider Maman (2003), to name just two. of the artists.
