Laura S Harrison November 2018 Abstract Marinell Ash famously referred to the latter half of the nineteenth century as experiencing a ‘strange death’ in interest in the Scottish historical past, but increasing evidence suggests this was not an entirely fair assessment. Rather than ‘dying’, interest in the past was expressed in ways beyond the club books, texts, and other antiquarian pursuits that were the focus of Ash’s work, and instead were taken up by more public displays of commemoration. This thesis examines the public commemorations of the medieval Scottish Wars of Independence, one of the more popular historical periods during the time Ash was referring to. By considering the types of commemorations dedicated to this conflict that were created during the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, and how they changed over time, this thesis shows how identity was performed in Scotland during this period at local and national levels, as well as how events and figures from the Middle Ages could be sculpted to fit a variety of ambitions. The main empirical section of this thesis is divided into three chapters, which are dictated by the ways in which commemorations are interacted with by the public. The first chapter examines immovable commemorations: permanent, fixed features of the built environment. The commemorations in this chapter include monuments, murals, stained-glass windows, and other features on buildings, all of which have a (theoretical) permanence because they are in fixed locations. The second chapter is focused on intangible commemorations: the ceremonial aspects of commemoration, particularly anniversaries and the opening of monuments, which are the most performative types of commemoration. The final chapter is concerned with the movable paraphernalia of commemoration: those objects that could be passed between people or locations. This chapter examines texts (including club books, novels, song books, poetry, and chapbooks), paintings, and relics. This thesis sets the commemoration of the Wars of Independence against the changing political, religious, and cultural landscape of Scotland from 1800 to i 1939. Placing the public at the centre of the study of these commemorative acts allows new insights into the importance of local history in the performance of identity, and the ways in which different sections of society engaged with commemorations. It also provides a framework that illustrates the benefits of undertaking an exhaustive study of the commemorations for one historical period. In this way, this thesis joins a growing field that recognises the value in how commemorations reveal contemporary attitudes. Significance does not require historical accuracy when it comes to acts of commemoration. During a period of widespread commemorative efforts for historical conflicts, as well as an increasing use of the medieval past from the full span of the political spectrum, this thesis is therefore well placed to demonstrate the potential effects of commemorating the medieval past in the present. ii Lay Summary This thesis examines the public commemorations of the medieval Scottish Wars of Independence from 1800 to 1939.     Avoch Community Archaeology Report of a Survey of Ormond Castle, Avoch, Ross- shire carried out by members of the North of Scotland Archaeological Society and Avoch Community Archaeology group th st Mar 20 to 21 2016 With the kind permission of Broadlands Estates Rosehaugh Background The North of Scotland Archaeological Society (NOSAS) and Avoch Community Archaeology (ACA) group joined forces in March 2016 to survey and photograph Ormond Castle, GR NH 6963 5358 (HER ID: MHG8226, Canmore ID 13572). The castle overlooks the village of Avoch on the Black Isle and commands good views across the Moray Firth to the south and the former ferry crossing between Chanonry and Ardersier in the east. To date Ormond castle has not received the attention it deserves. It is traditionally associated with William the Lion (1143 – 1214). He built two castles on the Black Isle in 1179, one at Redcastle and a second which is thought to be this one. Andrew de Moray was owner of the castle in the 13th century and principal commander of Scottish forces in the north during the Wars of Independence in the late 13th Century, but was mortally wounded fighting alongside William Wallace at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297. In 1455, after being in the hands of the de Moray family and the earls of Ross, the castle passed to royal control and in 1481 James III granted it to his son, the Marquis of Ormond, from whom the present name derives. The castle was destroyed by Cromwell’s forces in 1650 and the stones were transported over the firth to build the Citadel in Inverness.

From this, an attempt is made to establish deviancy. Comparative evidence, such as literary, runic, legal and folkloric evidence will be used critically to shed perspective on burial practices and the artefacts found within the graves. The thesis will mostly cover burials from the Viking Age (late 8th century to the mid- 11th century), but where the comparative evidence dates from other periods, its validity is discussed accordingly. Two types of deviant burial emerged: the criminal and the victim. A third type, which shows distinctive irregularity yet lacks deviancy, is the healer/witch burial.

HAMMOND Ethnicity and the Writing of Medieval Scottish history1 ABSTRACT Historians have long tended to define medieval Scottish society in terms of interactions between ethnic groups. This approach was developed over the course of the long nineteenth century, a formative period for the study of medieval Scotland. At that time, many scholars based their analysis upon scientific principles, long since debunked, which held that medieval ‘peoples’ could only be understood in terms of ‘full ethnic packages’. This approach was combined with a positivist historical narrative that defined Germanic Anglo-Saxons and Normans as the harbingers of advances in Civilisation. While the prejudices of that era have largely faded away, the modern discipline still relies all too often on a dualistic ethnic framework. This is particularly evident in a structure of periodisation that draws a clear line between the ‘Celtic’ eleventh century and the ‘Norman’ twelfth. Furthermore, dualistic oppositions based on ethnicity continue, particu- larly in discussions of law, kingship, lordship and religion. Geoffrey Barrow’s Robert Bruce and the Community of the Realm of Scotland, first published in 1965 and now available in the fourth edition, is proba- bly the most widely read book ever written by a professional historian on the Middle Ages in Scotland.2 In seeking to introduce the thirteenth century to such a broad audience, Barrow depicted Alexander III’s Scot- land as fundamentally

(1329-1370) appears notice of a charter to "Marthacus Rind' of four oxengate of land of Cass and four oxengate in the forest of Platter, in the County of Forfar; also, a similar charter to Murthaens del Rynd granted at Dundeè on the 31st of July and in the 37th year of the reign of the same sovereign (1365), the reddendo in the latter case being of albarum cirothecarum, or 2d. in silver, in name of blench, only if asked, and at 'our manor of Forfar.' 1415 — Alexander de Rend, Knight, is witness to a deed dated at Aberdeen 6th February 1415 (Register of the Bishopric of Moray).

    ul Communications Market Report: Scotland Research Document Publication date: 19 August 2010 Introduction This is Ofcom’s fifth annual review of communications markets in Scotland. The report offers a detailed overview of communications services across the nation. It provides a comparison of their take-up and use within different parts of Scotland, and compares this with other UK nations. Nearly eight in ten people (79%) claimed to have a mobile handset in Q1 2010, ten percentage points lower than the UK-wide average. A 2G mobile signal covers 87% of people in Scotland relative to the UK figure of 97%. Higher-speed 3G mobile, which is available to 87% of the UK population, covers 66% of the Scottish population. With mobile signals focusing on densely populated regions of Scotland, and influenced by topography, geographic coverage tends to be lower in Scotland (64% for 2G and 41% for 3G) than elsewhere in the UK (91% 2G and 76% 3G). Sixty-one per cent claim to have broadband in Scotland, still below the UK average (71%), with the gap widening by two percentage points over the last twelve months. Cable broadband is available to 37% of the population (versus 48% of the UK as a whole), while most fixed exchanges in Scotland now support broadband. But the actual speeds experienced by consumers depend on a variety of factors. These include the length of the line from the exchange to a customer’s premises, and the number of people connected to a single exchange who are logged on to the internet concurrently. As competition between communications providers intensifies, a growing proportion of homes are taking services in bundles of two or more.
