AMY JOHNSON TEACHER’S PACK INFORMATION FOR TEACHERS

Amy Johnson 1903-1941

Introduction

Amy Johnson was born in Hull on the 1 July 1903. She was the daughter of a local businessman, John William Johnson and his wife Amy (nee Hodge).

Amy had two sisters: Irene, born in 1905 and Mollie, born in 1908. Her father was the son of a Danish immigrant, Anders Jorgensen, who had changed his name to Andrew Johnson when he took British nationality.

In 1922 Amy went to Sheffield University where she studied for a degree in Economics. After graduating Amy had a number of jobs in the Hull area before she moved to London where, in early 1927, she took a job as a solicitor’s secretary. In 1928 she joined the London Flying Club at Stag Lane Aerodrome.

Amy’s first solo flight was made after less than 16 hours tuition. She gained her pilots ‘A’ licence in July 1929 and in December of the same year she obtained her ground engineers licence, becoming one of the first women in Britain to do so.

In 1930 Amy secured financial backing from Lord Wakefield for an attempt to break the world record for a flight from London to Australia. Lord Wakefield agreed to provide fuel and supplies for her along the route. He also provided half the cost of a second hand aircraft, and her father agreed to give the remainder of the money.

Sewerby Hall - Amy Johnson Teacher’s Pack 2 The aircraft was a two-year old De Havilland 60 Gipsy Moth biplane that was fitted with long range fuel tanks. Amy christened it Jason. The aircraft cost £600 and was purchased just two weeks before she set off for Australia.

On the morning of the 5 of May 1930 Amy took off from Croydon Aerodrome, South London on the first leg of her flight to Darwin, Australia, a distance of over 9,500 miles.

Amy had hoped to break the world record of 15 days for the flight, however, mechanical problems, strong headwinds and the seasonal monsoon, delayed her and it was May 24th, 19 days later, that she eventually arrived. Although she had failed to break the world record, she was feted as the first woman to successfully fly solo from the UK to Australia.

Over the next few years Amy made several other daring and record breaking flights:

1931 She flew from London to Tokyo and en-route became the first pilot to fly from London to Moscow in one day.

1932 She set the world record for a solo flight from London to Cape Town.

1933 Amy and her husband, Jim Mollinson, flew non-stop from Wales to the USA (they actually crash-landed at Bridgeport, Connecticut after running out of fuel!).

1934 Flying with her husband, Amy set a record flight time from England to India.

1936 She regained her London to Cape Town record.

During the Second World War Amy joined the women’s section of the Air Transport Auxiliary. It was whilst serving in the A.T.A. that she was killed, when, in January 1941, an aircraft she was flying crashed into the Thames estuary. Her body was never recovered.

In 1934 Sewerby Hall was purchased by Corporation from the Lloyd-Greame family. Two years later in a public ceremony, Bridlington Corporation invited Amy Johnson to formerly open the Hall.

It was because of this link that in 1958 the ‘Amy Johnson Collection’ was presented by Amy’s father to Sewerby Hall Museum and Art Gallery. The Amy Johnson Room was opened the following year. Since then the collection has grown, as additional material has been collected from other sources.

The Amy Johnson collection is displayed in an historic showcase donated by Amy’s parents.

The collection includes the CBE that Amy was awarded by the British Government as well as memorabilia and gifts that she collected from her different flights. It also includes the bag that she carried on her final, fateful flight which was recovered from the Thames after her aircraft crashed.

Sewerby Hall - Amy Johnson Teacher’s Pack 4 Self-Led Activities • Children might be tasked with investigating the different presentation pieces that Amy was given during her travels. They could draw their favourite and describe why they like it. In the class room they might use their drawing as an inspiration for designing or creating a trophy or gift that represents their locality. • Pupils could be asked to think about and discuss why Amy was such a celebrity and what it tells us about the differences between then and now. They might also be asked to think about what sort of achievements people celebrate today and the ways that they are similar or different to the achievements of Amy Johnson. • Another activity would be to think about the role of women in the first half of the 20th century. Would these awards have been given to Amy if she had been a man? The collections on display show both how much she achieved, but also how unusual it was for a woman to achieve such things. Would we think it unusual for a woman to do such things now? This could lead to a discussion about the roles of women and men in today's society. • Amy Johnson was a very important local celebrity and role model for many girls at the time. Pupils could investigate how women's lives changed over the course of Amy's life: enfranchisement, divorce, property laws, the home and the workplace, etc. They could also look at technology; Amy was born before the first flight by a powered aeroplane and they could link the rapid changes in technology in Amy's lifetime to the changes in their own. They could use timelines to plot this information. • The children could use information from the Amy Johnson display to create their own piece of creative writing, such as a diary entry or investigation into her flights and the places she visited. Alternatively they could write a newspaper article about Amy opening Sewerby Hall.

GETTING THERE SAFELY

This task mixes role play and cross curricular investigation as the children take on the role of Amy Johnson planning her record breaking flight to Australia in 1930. Using maps and an information sheet about her aircraft, Jason, children write a flight plan for Amy to follow.

This activity might be further extended by getting the children to create a diary entry or log for the journey based on their investigations, Amy’s original pilot’s log and their own research into the different destinations that Amy visited.

This task could be adapted as an investigation into navigation using maps; calculating direction and compass bearing and distance using a scale. A key question might be how did she know which direction to go? Give the children a map and a compass, tell them to imagine that they are flying to Australia and ask them to point which way they should go. They could also use the compass and map to find the direction for some of Amy’s other destinations: Cape Town, New , Moscow, Tokyo etc. This could also lead on to a further investigation into magnetism and how and why a compass works. As a navigation activity this could also be linked to Sewerby Hall’s orienteering course. Details are on the Sewerby Hall website.

The task is to write a Flight Plan for Amy Johnson’s record breaking trip to Australia in 1930. Task:

1) Use the Aircraft Data Sheet to fill in as much of the Flight Plan as you can. It will give you the details of her aircraft that you will need.

2) The map shows Amy Johnson's route from London to Darwin, Australia. The map shows the route in 5 legs. Use the map and the scale to complete the remaining sections of the Flight Plan.

3) According to your flight plan how many days will it take for the journey to Australia, assuming that you can fly for only 8 hours every day.

4) Compare your flight plan to Amy Johnson's log book. Did she make the same number of stops as you suggested, did she manage the journey in the same number of days as you calculated?

5) When Amy Johnson returned from her flight to Australia in 1930 she gave public talks about it called "How Jason and I flew to the land of the Golden Fleece." Using the information from Amy's flight log book, your flight plan and also using any other research or knowledge that you might have, imagine you have just made the flight and write your own account to give as a public lecture. When Amy gave her lectures she illustrated it with photographs. Can you find any images on the internet to illustrate your talk?

In 1930 Amy Johnson became the first woman to fly solo from the United Kingdom to Australia, a distance of over 9,500 miles (over 15,000 km). In recognition of her achievement, the British Government made her a “Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire”, known as a CBE. Task:

1) When the Government gave Amy Johnson the CBE there would have been a citation - this is an explanation of what she had done to deserve the award. Imagine that you are the Prime Minister and are going to give Amy Johnson the CBE. On the sheet provided by your teacher, write a citation to go with the award. You should:
