I found Sokal's critiq The only aspect of the Sokal Hoax I was aware of before I read this book was that the hoax article Sokal wrote about physics was submitted to a publication that did not subject articles to peer review. His critique would also gain more credibility from encompassing his own community: the failure of scientific institutions to address the abuse of statistical methods or promote systematic reviews is no less of a threat to progress than the ramblings of postmodernists or fundamentalists. They believe that, just as certain nouns are names of things, sentences are names of facts. And they sometimes even believe that sentences are some- thing like pictures of facts, or that they are projections of facts.7 But all this is mistaken. According to Popper, a research enterprise starts from a problem (Pi in fig. 1). Wheredoes the problemcome from? Popper focusseson the type of research situation in which progress of a dramatic order may occur rather than on the "piecemeal" mode production of new knowledge characteristic of research enter prises approximating the Kuhnian ideal type of Normal Science. In the typical situation of this type a "veteran" theory has run into diffculty, "clashed" with some experimental results. The "clash" may be more or less manifest, and more or less serious, with logical contradiction as a limit case. It may be latent, in particular in a type of research situation where pieces of knowledgeproduced in an "empirical" manner cannot be explained by the pertinent veteran theory. The residual may grow but resist explanation, as e.g., spectroscopicknowledge did before 1913. Such a residual-knowledgewhich cannot be explained by the veteran theory is practically always in evidence; however, when it accumulates or manifestly con flicts with the veteran theory, it constitutes a challenge which can no longer be ignored. The afore-mentioned type of situation of manifest conflict typically arises when attempts are being made to apply a theory to a new territory. Indeed it must occur, sooner or later, since the kernel of the theory is a conceptual model of a real (physical, biological,...) system, and because it is in the natur eof a model that it also has negative analogy. Thus a theory, once created, will sooneror later give rise to an objectiveproblem situation of that sort: a problem which confronts us or which we literally have to dis-cover. -

Characteristics of Pseudo-Science : unfalsifiable - Any phenomenon can be interpreted in terms of the pseudo-scientific theory “Whatever happened always confirmed it” (5) - Example: man drowning vs saving a child Characteristics of Science : falsifiability - A scientific theory is always takes risks concerning the empirical ob- servations. It contains the possibility of being falsified. There is con- firmation only when there is failure to refute. 27 28 CHAPTER 1. POPPER’S FALSIFIABILITY CRITERION “The theory is incompatible with certain possible results of observation” (6) - Example: Einstein 1919 1.2 Kuhn’s criticism of Popper Kuhn’s Criticism of Popper : Popper’s falsifiability criterion fails to char- acterize science as it is actually practiced. His criticism at best applies to revolutionary periods of the history of science. Another criterion must be given for normal science. Kuhn’s argument : - Kuhn’s distinction between normal science and revolutionary science - A lesson from the history of science: most science is normal science. Accordingly, philosophy of science should focus on normal science. And any satisfactory demarcation criterion must apply to normal science. - Popper’s falsifiability criterion at best only applies to revolutionary science, not to normal science. -

Some are regarded as revealing the nature of what they represent, as in familiar cases of theoretical identification in physical chemistry where water is represented as hydrogen hydroxide and gold is represented as the element with atomic number 79. Other theoretical representations are regarded as serving other explanatory aims without being taken individually to reveal the nature of what they represent, as in the representation of gold as a standard for pre-20th century monetary systems in economics or the representation of the meaning of an English sentence as a function from possible worlds to truth values in truth-conditional semantics. Call the first attitude towards a theoretical representation realist and the second attitude instrumentalist. Philosophical explanation purports to reveal the nature of whatever falls within its purview, so it would appear that a realist attitude towards its representations is a natural default. I offer reasons for skepticism about such default realism that emerge from attending to several case studies of philosophical explanation and drawing a general metaphilosophical moral from the foregoing discussion. Against Method Fourth Edition Paul Feyerabend VERSO London • New York Analytical Index Being a Sketch of the Main Argument Introdnction 1 Science is an essentially anarchic enterprise: theoretical anarchism is more humanitarian and more likely to encourage progress than its law-and-order alternatives. 1 7 This is shown both by an examination of historical episodes and by an abstract analysis of the relation between idea and action. The only principle that does not inhibit progress is: anything goes. 2 13 For example, we may use hypotheses that contradict well-confirmed theories and/or well-established experimental results. We may advance science by proceeding counterinductively. 3 17 The consistency condition which demands that new hypotheses agree with accepted theories is unreasonable because it preserves the older theory, and not the better theory. Hypotheses contradicting well-confirmed theories give us evidence that cannot be obtained in any other way. Proliferation of theories is beneficial for science, while uniformity impairs its critical power. Uniformity also endangers the free development of the individual. 4 ~ There is no idea, however ancient and absurd, that is not capable of improving our knowledge. The whole history of thought is absorbed into science and is used for improving every single theory. Nor is political interference rejected. Imre Lakatos’s Philosophy of Mathematics Gábor Kutrovátz Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest e-mail: [email protected] Introduction Imre Lakatos (1922-1974) is known world-wide by at least two different groups of philosophers. For the philosophers of science, he was a great defender of scientific rationality: he gave up the idea of ‘instant’ methodological rationality and substituted it with the historiographical methodology based on the notion of ‘rational reconstruction’. For the philosophers of mathematics, he was a great attacker at the formalist school, and instead of the formal-axiomatic features of mathematics he put the emphasis on heuristics, the historical processes of theory building and conceptualisation. These two ‘incarnations’ of Lakatos are rarely discussed within a unique philosophical framework, and not without reason: Lakatos himself never really tried to harmonise these two fields of interest. There are signs showing that he intended to build a common ground for them, but perhaps this project could not even take a very definite shape before his early death. In this paper I shall concentrate on only one of these topics: his philosophy of mathematics; and my primary aim is to give a brief and coherent summary of his ideas concerning this field. It should be noted, however, that his philosophy of mathematics and that of science obviously have some characteristics in common, since they were contrived by the same man, and not at a great temporal distance in his academic life, when he was under very similar intellectual influences. My secondary purpose therefore is to build this summary in a way that is in accordance with his general philosophical theory of science, that is, to give a mild ‘rational reconstruction’ of his ideas.1 The context of Lakatos’s philosophy of mathematics In the Acknowledgements of his doctoral thesis wrote on the philosophy of mathematics, Lakatos mentions three authors as the most influential sources for his philosophy. -
