Mitch Stone, Creator of Mitch Stone Essentials, Is One of the Hair World's Mitch Stone, creator of Mitch Stone Essentials, is one of the hair world’s most respected talents. Stone’s career has spanned film, television, fashion, editorial and advertising, and has given him a rich perspective that makes him one of the most sought after celebrity hairstylists around. He was part of the Oscar -winning team on 2005’s Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events. His work is informed by a multitude of passions and avocations that include photography, writing, surfing, and environmental activism. In his native Southern California, Stone has a celebrity clientele that relies on his talents both for film and television work and red carpet appearances. Stone has also worked with prestigious photographers including Herb Ritts, Albert Watson, Sir Arthur Elgort and Peter Arnell, and styled hair for runway shows for Armani, Cynthia Rowley, Adrienne Vittadini and Patricia Fields. His editorial work has appeared in Elle, Vogue, Vanity Fair, InStyle, Rolling Stone and countless other glossies. He has also worked on major advertising campaigns for Victoria’s Secret, Ray Ban, Levi’s and many more. Stone brings his lengthy experience working with models and actors to his eponymous line of styling products, the first to be infused with a propri- etary vitamin complex known as VCompSTM . He has always considered it his job not only to make his clients look good, but to keep their hair healthy, despite the hot lights, long hours, and perpetual styling required on set. Bradshaw, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the dominant ideologies and hegemonic social constructs the television series Friends communicates in regard to friendship practices, gender roles, racial representations, and social class in order to suggest relationships between the series and social patterns in the broader culture. This dissertation describes the importance of studying television content and its relationship to media culture and social influence. The analysis included a quantitative content analysis of friendship maintenance, and a qualitative textual analysis of alternative families, gender, race, and class representations. The analysis found the characters displayed actions of selectivity, only accepting a small group of friends in their social circle based on friendship, gender, race, and social class distinctions as the six characters formed a culture that no one else was allowed to enter. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project stems from countless years of watching and appreciating television. During its pioneering era, Hollywood was dominated by women who occupied every aspect of the filmmaking process, both off and on screen; but the consolidation of the studio system in the 1920s and 1930s served to reduce the scope of opportunities for women working in off-screen roles. Off screen, a pattern of gendered employment was effectively established, one that continues to confine women to so-called “feminine” crafts such as scriptwriting and costume. Celebrated exceptions like Ida Lupino, Dorothy Arzner, Norah Ephron, Nancy Meyers, and Katherine Bigelow have found various ways to succeed as producers and directors in Hollywood’s continuing male-dominated culture. More typically, as recently as 2011, “women comprised only 18% of directors, executive producers, cinematographers and editors working on the top 250 domestic grossing films” (Lauzen 2012: 1). At the same time, on-screen representations came to be increasingly predicated on a gendered star system that privileges hetero-masculine desires, and are dominated by historically specific discourses of idealized and fetishized feminine beauty that, in turn, severely limit the number and types of roles available to women. As far back as 1973 Molly Haskell observed that the elision of beauty and youth that underpins Hollywood casting impacted upon the professional longevity of female stars, who, at the first visible signs of aging, were deemed “too old or over-ripe for a part,” except as a marginalized mother or older sister.
