Apple Picks Up Israeli Neo-Noir Series 'Losing Alice' Rotem Yaron/Apple TV+ 'Losing Alice' Created, written and directed by Sigal Avin, the eight-part thriller stars Ayelet Zurer as an aging director who becomes obsessed with a younger screenwriter. Apple TV+ is expanding its slate of international original series. The streamer has picked up exclusive international rights to Israeli neo-noir series Losing Alice and signed a co- production deal with Israel's Dori Media and cable company HOT. Created, written and directed Sigal Avin, Losing Alice stars Ayelet Zurer (Man of Steel, Daredevil) as Alice, a 48 year-old film director who feels increasingly irrelevant but is inspired once more after becoming obsessed with Sophie, a 24 year- old femme fatale screenwriter played by Lihi Kornowski. Building on the Faust legend, but through the unique prism of a female filmmaker, Losing Alice explores issues such as jealousy, guilt, fear of aging as well as the complex relationships women have among themselves and each other. The first eight-part season of Losing Alice will air on Apple TV+ worldwide later this year and is currently airing on HOT in Israel. Losing Alice joins an ever-growing list of international Apple Originals and is the second high profile Israeli series snapped up by the streamer. Apple TV+ recently boarded drama series Tehran, from Fauda writer Moshe Zonder. Apple TV+ will serve as a co-producer on the series from Cineflix Rights and Israeli network Kan 11. As part of the deal, Apple will serve as the exclusive streaming home to the series in all territories. A movie adaptation was released on May 15, 2009. Running time are 146 minutes and this movie in some languages English, Italian, Latin, French, Swiss German, German, and Spanish. The genres are thriller and mystery. The director of this movie is Ronald William “Ron” Howard. He was born in Duncan March 1, 1954, Oklahoma, the son of Jean Speegle Howard, an actress, and Rance Howard, a director, writer, producer, and actor. His family 2 moved to Burbank, California in 1958, the year before the birth of his younger brother, Clint Howard. Howard graduated from John Burroughs High School, and later attended the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts but did not graduate. Howard came to prominence in the 1960s while playing Andy Griffith's TV son, Opie Taylor, on The Andy Griffith Show (credited as Ronny Howard), and later in the 1970s as Howard Cunningham's son and Arthur Fonzarelli's best friend, Richie Cunningham, on Happy Days (a role he played from 1974 to 1980).

Apple Boards Israeli Drama Series ‘Losing Alice’ By Joe Otterson Dori Media Apple is adding another international co-production to its streaming repertoire. The streamer has boarded the Israeli psychological thriller series “Losing Alice.” The show is produced by Israel’s Dori Media Productions in association with HOT. The eight-episode series is currently airing on HOT and will stream worldwide later this year on Apple TV Plus. The series hails from creator Sigal Avin, who served as director in addition to writing. It follows Alice (Ayelet Zurer), a 48 year old film director who feels irrelevant since raising her family. After a brief encounter on the train, she becomes obsessed with 24 year old screenwriter, femme-fatale, Sophie (Lihi Kornowski), and eventually surrenders her moral integrity in order to achieve power, relevance and success. The series uses flashbacks and flash-forwards to take viewers through the conscious and subconscious parts of Alice’s mind. This is the second Israeli co-production deal Apple has announced in recent weeks. Earlier this month, Apple announced it would co-produce the thriller series “Tehran,” about a female Mossad agent who goes deep undercover on a dangerous mission in the titular Iranian capital. The streamer is also currently working on “Suspicion” starring Uma Thurman, which is based on the Israeli series “False Flag.” Other international shows include “Pachinko,” based on the Min Jin Lee novel of the same name, “Shantaram” starring Charlie Hunnam and based on the Gregory David Robert novel of the same name, “Slow Horses” starring Gary Oldman,” and “Masters of the Air” from Amblin Television and Playtone.

Reviewed by Batya Weinbaum, American Public University, Charles Town, WV, USA How Strong Jewish Orthodox Women Won Their Show to Soon Grow in Brooklyn: Women Propelling Shtisel’s Success Tablet Magazine described Shtisel, created in 2013, now streaming on Netflix (which bought Shtisel in Dec 2018) as “all black hats and beards.” Shtisel centers in a Haredim community in Geula, an ultra-Orthodox neighborhood adjacent to Jerusalem’s Mea Shearim. Debuting in June of 2013, the show was synopsized as being “about an aging Haredi widower in Jerusalem and his hapless grown bachelor son.” Yet a vibrant circle of strong women in the community account for some momentum of the show’s success, resulting in a contract for a third season. First-season ratings were not substantial given its low-visibility in a niche channel Abot Hameiri Productions developed for a satellite service which broadcast the show in Israel in 2013. Yet critics paid attention. By 2014, the series claimed Israeli Emmys (Ophirs) for best drama and best original screenplay. Israel’s public broadcaster purchased the rights two years later. Over its first two seasons, the show won more than a dozen Israeli TV awards (Gruen). Three years after first appearing, Shtisel episodes ranked among the most-watched shows in Israel; shortly after Netflix began Shtisel’s international distribution, Hannah K.S. Canter and her mother, Marta Kauffman, co-creator of Friends and of Netflix’s Gracie and Frankie (Bruner) sold a Brooklyn-set American adaptation of the show set to Amazon, following other original Israeli shows that became US series including Showtime’s Homeland.
