Closing Remarks Balance in Basketball (and Life)

Balance is perhaps the most important word for a player or coach to keep in mind. You have to have emotional balance. You have to have physical balance. You have to have mental balance. As coach I had to teach players individual balance, and then the balance of losing themselves in the group for the greater good of the team. Balance means keeping things in proper perspective, not permitting either excessive exuberance or dejection to interfere with preparation, performance, or subsequent individual or team behavior. Balance is important in many aspects of basketball. Besides physical, emotional, and mental balance, we need squad balance, rebounding balance, offensive balance, defen- sive balance, size balance. Balance, balance, balance. The same thing is true in life. We must have physical, emotional, and mental balance; balance between making a living and making a home. We must keep things in perspective, both the good and the bad. And we must listen to achieve that balance. Listen and observe at home and work. Balance the work against the play. Achieving balance in life (or basketball) requires great, great effort, desire, and alertness. Life is complicated, and it's easy to get things totally out of balance. That's when you have a problem. Hall of Fame Banquet Program President's Message

On behalf of the Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Association, I would like to welcome you to the 2006 Hall of Fame Banquet. I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to The College of the Holy Cross for serving as our host this evening and to Spalding for their continued financial support of this event.

The dedication and commitment of our Executive Board this past year has made my tenure as President rewarding and memorable. In particular, Don Byron, our Clinic Chairman, did an outstanding job to plan a first-rate clinic, and Mark Donahue has worked numerous hours to make this banquet one that will be enjoyed by all.

I would like to congratulate our Hall of Fame inductees, Dick Arieta, Dick LaDuke, and Jerry Phillips. These three successful coaches have positively affected countless student-athletes throughout their careers and rightfully join the ranks of our other esteemed Hall of Fame coaches.

It is also a great honor to present the Presidential Awards to three people who have contributed to the game in their own special ways. Emilio Diotalevi, Dale Hava, and Lenny Megliola have always made the game of basketball and the student-athletes with whom they deal their first priority.

Scott Eaton is our deserving Leo Miller Award winner. As a Past President and our Graphic Communications Director, Scott has worked tirelessly for this organization.

As we prepare for this upcoming season, I urge you to reflect on the tremendous responsibility that each of us has to our student-athletes. The young men and women whom we coach deserve our best efforts to provide them with nothing less than a great experience.

This evening, as we acknowledge some of the best coaching performances of this past year, we also salute all of our coaches and MBCA members who carry out their jobs with dignity and honor. To all of our MBCA members and coaches, I would like to extend my thanks for your dedication and hard work and best wishes for an enjoyable and successful season.

Respectfully,

Steve Manguso, MBCA President 2006-07 MBCA Hall of Fame -- 2006 Inductee

Dick Arieta

Dick Arieta began his coaching career at Fairhaven High School as the Assistant Basketball Coach, Head Football Coach, and Coach. Dick then became the Varsity Basketball Coach at Silver Lake Regional High School where he coached for thirty years. During his tenure, Dick enjoyed 407 victories with ten league championships and 23 State Tournament appearances. Dick also owned and operated basketball camps for 26 years and is currently an owner of the Plymouth Sports Dome. Coach Arieta has been honored with numerous awards for his coaching efforts over the years. MBCA Hall of Fame -- 2006 Inductee

Dick LaDuke

Coach Dick LaDuke was the head basketball coach at Westboro High School for 33 years winning over 400 games in an outstanding coaching career. Westboro qualified for twenty Central Mass District Tournaments, reaching the finals four times, and winning one Central title. The Rangers also qualified for the Clark Tournament twenty times under Coach LaDuke's leadership playing in six finals, and winning four Clark titles. Dick's teams won twelve league titles playing in the Midland and Midland-Wachusett Leagues. Westboro also won the Cervini- Hardy Sportsmanship Award given out annually in Central Mass. Coach LaDuke has been named Middlesex News Coach of the Year three times and also received the MBCA Coach of the Year Award in Central Mass. MBCA Hall of Fame -- 2006 Inductee

Jerry Phillips

Jerry Phillips began his coaching career as an assistant to Ron Perry Sr. at Catholic Memorial High School in 1966. After two years at CM, he became the assistant coach at Newton High School under Al Fortune. Jerry became the head coach at Newton High School in 1969. As head coach at Newton North High School, Jerry's teams won 372 and lost 238 in both the very competitive Suburban and Bay State Leagues. Jerry's teams have qualified for 16 State Tournaments and have won eight league championships. He has won numerous League Coach of the Year Awards as well as the Greater Boston Referees Coach of the Year Award. Jerry is currently retired and spends his time between Cape Cod and Florida where he runs community parks' basketball programs. 2006 Presidential Special Service Awards

Emilio E. Diotalevi

Emilio Diotalevi has had a major influence on Central MA basketball for the past 33 years. He is a respected IABO official who has worked many Clark Tourna- ment and district playoff games, and he is also the boys' basketball commissioner of the Dual Valley Conference. For the past 21 years, he has been the rules interpreter for Board 208 while training and mentoring officials across the state. Emilio was re- cently given the prestigious "life member" award, the highest honor a basketball offi- cial can receive, at the National IABO ban- quet in Rockville, MD. With his extensive knowledge of and passion for the game of basketball, Emilio has significantly impacted Central MA basketball, and we are fortunate that he has served both its student-athletes and officials for so many years. Dale Hava

Dale Hava has volunteered to promote youth basketball in the Central MA area for over 20 years. In the 1980's, Dale was instrumental in developing Youth Hoop, an age appropriate basketball league that competes throughout the North- east, and he served as its treasurer for 10 years. Dale was actively involved with Milford area youth basketball for 22 years. He served as president of the Milford Amateur Basketball Association from 1983 to 2004 and also volunteered as an eighth grade basketball coach for 16 years. For the last 17 years Dale has served Central MA student-athletes as an IABO official. Countless young athletes in the Central MA area have benefitted from Dale's pas- sion for the game and his dedication and readiness to serve his community. 2006 Presidential Special Service Awards

Lenny Megliola

Lenny Megliola has been writing about sports for the past thirty-five years and has received more than thirty New England and national awards for his writing. He currently writes for the Metrowest Daily News, primarily covering professional sports, but still loves to cover what he feels is the purest level of competition, that is, high school sports and basketball in particular. His love of the game and respect for those who teach it and those who play it the right way is always evident in his writing. Lenny has always enjoyed the human element involved in sport. He clearly recognizes the positive impact that sport has on so many of our student-athletes, and his writing reveals that he truly has his finger on the pulse of what's important about high school athlet- ics.
