At Cortland, athletics are viewed as having an important role in the educational mission of the College. During the fall, winter and spring seasons, Cortland participates in 25 intercollegiate sports — 14 women’s and 11 men’s — in an attempt to provide a broad program which meets the needs, interests and abilities of its students.

The Cortland athletic program placed ninth nationally out of approximately 430 colleges and universities in the 2007-08 all-sport United States Sports Academy Directors’ Cup Division III standings. The award was formerly known as the Sears Directors’ Cup from 1995-2002 and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Directors’ Cup in the 2002-03 school year.
