    Celebrating 110 years of Motorsport Excellence September 2012 Chairman’s Chat Well, I wished for fine weather for our early September events, and wasn’t disappointed. The Aintree Autumn Sprint on 1st September was another excellent event despite the low entry, which unfortunately meant that the event didn’t cover its costs. However, the day itself went well and, although no records were broken thanks to an annoying headwind on Railway Straight, a great time was had by everyone with no fewer than 5 timed runs being available. The following day saw several of us back at Aintree to help run the Sporting Bears “Dream Rides for Kids” charity day. The day followed the same format as last year; we were controlling the on-track activities of this incredibly rewarding event during which children with health issues from local charities were given rides around Aintree’s Club Circuit in all manner of exotic machinery. Another grand day it was too, fully in line with the charity’s well deserved claim of giving kids “Miles of Smiles”. Then, just 10 days later, the Greenpower Electric Car Races were treated to yet another fine day, but once again a windy one. No this isn’t meant to be a weather report for Aintree, but I’m pleased to say that compared with many events elsewhere this year, we have faired fairly well when it comes to the inclement stuff. Talking to competitors and other event organisers, it seems that there are several drivers who have decided that they’ve had enough of wet events this year and have taken the decision to put the car away and wait until next year before coming out to play again.

    The Loudon-clear guide to… Rally Isle of Man When Elfyn Evans and Craig Parry clinched the British Rally Championship title last time out on the Ulster, there must have been a few folk worried about the potential entertainment value of the final round. Those people have clearly never visited the Isle of Man in September. What’s more, those same folk certainly hadn’t counted on entries from Rally Finland podium finishers Craig Breen/Scott Martin and Manx legend and local hero Mark Higgins, who will be co-driven by Darren Garrod. What might have been looking like a parade lap for the DMACK British Rally Championship pair is anything-but. This week’s series finale has become one of the most eagerly anticipated and exciting rounds of what’s been a sensational comeback year for the BRC. Breen will drive the same DGM-run DS 3 R5 he used to win the Circuit of Ireland in April, while Higgins lines up alongside Evans in a second DMACK Ford Fiesta R5. But don’t be fooled into thinking it’s going to be just those three at the sharp end. There’s a season-long silver medal on offer here and a very long list of determined and capable crews chasing that runners-up spot. Elsewhere in the series, Rob Duggan and Gerard Conway have already sealed the DMACK Junior BRC title in their Vauxhall Adam R2, but the National Rally Cup’s still up for grabs with Mitsubishi Mirage driver Robert Blomberg needing a top-four finish to clinch that award.

    The Loudon-clear guide to… Circuit of Ireland When I did the Circuit of Ireland with Robert Barrable a couple of years ago, there was a real feeling the event was growing; the legend had definitely been reborn. And now? Well, there’s no doubting the fact that its back. Granted, it’s not the full, five-day, north-south tour of the Seventies and Eighties, but the organising team – led by Bobby Willis – has worked wonders with this event and the profile is arguably higher than it’s ever been. And that profile is reflected in the event’s standing as a shining light in three major series - the British, Irish and European Rally Championship - for the first time since 1991. The cream of European rallying will gather in Belfast with an astonishing field of almost 40 top-line R5 cars. And before them lies some of the best asphalt rallying in the world. Stages like Hamiltons Folly and Torr Head are part of the fabric of our sport – they’re fantastic to watch and even better to drive. Growing up with a family involved in rallying, there were some fantastic stories about Jimmy McRae on the Circuit of Ireland. It’s still an absolute treat to listen to a tale or two about his seven wins – even if I was just about getting ready for my first birthday when he and Rob Arthur took victory number seven in 1989! It was those kind of stories, and the knowledge that this rally has been running since 1931, that made it so special when I finished third with Rob in 2014 (in a Ford Fiesta R5).

This came courtesy of a very welcome win for Thierry and Nicolas on Tour de Corse, which was our first of the season. We did of course inherit the victory as a result of Elfyn Evans picking up a puncture on the final Power Stage, but taking first place is naturally a positive thing for the team. Were it not for that misfortune, Thierry and Nicolas would have claimed second in Corsica, which would’ve been an encouraging result and is thanks to their fantastic efforts in the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC. But for a true win you have to be fastest and, on this occasion, we didn’t quite manage that. As a team, however, we have been pushing hard and this result will definitely act as a morale boost, even if we have to be clear with ourselves where we are performance-wise and where we need to be. We were helped in Corsica by Dani and Carlos’ strong showing to score important points in fourth place, and even though Sébastien and Daniel encountered problems on day one that left them on the back foot they were still able to use the rally to learn more about the Hyundai i20 Coupe and how to get the best from it.

    No. 219 Winter 2018 BTRDA Rallycross Gold Star Champion 2018 Luke Constantine Photo: Trevor Coulson President’s Notes December 2018 12 months ago, I announced in this column that David Richards was to take over as the Chair of the MSA Board and I would be joining the Board as well. It has been a thoroughly interesting and exciting year. Most of you will know by now that, on November 12th, we re- launched the Company with a new title - Motorsport UK. This marks an ambitious new phase for motorsport in the UK. It represents a fundamental change to refocus from pure governance and legislation to one that promotes all our Sports and then adds customer service for members at the top of the agenda. I am extremely pleased to see a particular focus on all grass roots motorsport and an ambition to remove some layers of unnecessary bureaucracy that has grown up over the years. It will take some time but I am certain that we shall see the start of the difference in the next 12 months. Heading up the new era for Motorsport UK will be Hugh Chambers who joined the Company on November 1st. His CV is very impressive having been at the top end of motorsport, as well as being a key person in the deliverance of the London Olympics. He is also a motorsport competitor , having an MGB which he races when he can, and, for those more of my age, you will remember his father, Marcus Chambers who was the team manager for BMC in the 1950s and 60s and then for the Rootes team running Sunbeam Tigers and the Hillman Hunters.
