The distinctive unit insignia (DUI) redesignated retroactive to 1 October 2003, for the Indiana Army National Guard Element, Joint Force Headquarters and amended to update the description and add a symbolism, was: a. Originally authorized for State Staff and State Detachment, Indiana National Guard by letter AG 421.7, Office of the Quartermaster General, 24 April 1935. b. Redesignated for Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment and Noncolor Bearing Units of the Indiana Army National Guard by letter AGAH-A, The Institute of Heraldry, 13 January 1971. c. Redesignated for Headquarters, State Area Command, Indiana Army National Guard effective 1 May 1984, by letter TAPC-PDH-R, The Institute of Heraldry, 7 June 1993. 2. The description and symbolism of the design are as follows: DESCRIPTION A gold color metal and enamel device 1 5/32 inches (2.94 em) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Azure, within a circle of thirteen mullets a mullet and a torch in pale and to base an inner half circle of five mullets, all Or. Attached above the shield from a wreath Or and Azure, a demi-lion rampant Argent, holding in dexter paw a laurel branch Vert. Attached below the shield a Gold scroll inscribed "SERVICE FOR SECURITY" in Blue letters. SYMBOLISM The shield is adapted from the state flag of Indiana. The torch signifies liberty and enlightenment; the outer circle of stars represents the thirteen original states of the Union and the half circle of stars the five states admitted before Indiana. Indiana, the nineteenth state admitted, is represented by the single larger star. The demi-lion is the crest of the Harrison family whose history is most intimately associated with that of Indiana. This authorization is in accordance with AR 670-1 and National Guard Bureau Organizational Authority Number 79-04, dated 26 March 2004. The shoulder sleeve insignia redesignated retroactive to 1 October 2003, for the Indiana Army.National Guard Element, Joint Force Headquarters and amended to update the description and add a symbolism, was: a. Originally approved for Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, Indiana National Guard by letter QMGHB 421.4, Office of the Quartermaster General, 17 May 1949. b. Redesignated for the Headquarters, State Area Command, Indiana Army National Guard effective 1 May 1984, by letter TAPC-PDH-R, The Institute of Heraldry, 7 June 1993. 2. The description and symbolism of the design are as follows: DESCRIPTION On an ultramarine blue shield 3 1/2 inches (8.89 em) in height and 2 1/2 inches (6.35 em) in width with a 1/8 inch (.32 em) golden yellow border, a star above a flaming torch emitting seven rays, all golden yellow. SYMBOLISM The design elements are taken from the Indiana state flag. The torch signifies liberty and enlightenment; the rays round the torch represent their far reaching influence. The one large star above the torch represents Indiana. 3. This authorization is in accordance with AR 670-1 and National Guard Bureau Organizational Authority Number 79-04, dated 26 March 2004.
