Read the story carefully. Try to spot the PROBLEMS the characters have and SOLUTIONS they find as you read the story. THE MOON TREE By Dan Ahearn The ball flew like a rocket into the woods. Hector found the ball next to a strange, flat stone that was dirty and scratched. It rested against a tall tree. On the stone was a plaque. It said : The seed of this tree was a space explorer. It went to the moon with the crew of the Apollo 14. The seed was planted here on July 4, 1976. Hector ran to get his friend Steve. He didn’t notice the red flags that circled the tree. Hector and Steve ran to the library, and they read about the moon trees. The boys learned that 500 seeds went on the space mission. The seeds didn’t land on the moon. They stayed in orbit with astronaut Stuart Roosa. It had been this astronaut’s idea to bring the seeds to the space mission. Back on earth, the seeds grew into normal trees. Space travel had not changed them. People planted hundreds of moon tree seedlings, and the trees grew all over the world. The boys told the librarian, Mrs. Wu, about the moon tree. ’I forgot about our moon tree’, said Mrs. Wu. ’But I have bad news.’ She explained that most of the woods would be gone soon. There were red flags around each tree that would be cut down. ‘Why?’ cried Hector. ‘To make room for the new shopping mall,’ said Mrs. Wu. ‘That’s not right,’ said Steve. There must be something we can do!’ Mrs. Wu said they needed a plan. She and the boys talked all day about how to save the moon tree. By the time the library closed, they already had a plan. The boys met with their friends. They told their friends the plan to save the moon tree. Hector held up the paper. ‘This is a petition,‘ he said. ‘It says, ‘The moon tree is an important part of history. It is too valuable to lose. Please save our moon tree!’ We need everybody in town to sign this petition.’ 9 051-eng-wb2-(Short Stories) SHORT STORY 1 - THE MOON TREE - READING Hector said, ‘Ask everybody to sign the petition! Save the moon tree!’. They called themselves the Moon Tree Crew. Then, Steve wanted to name the tree. He said, ’Our moon tree needs a name. People will care more about a tree called …. Apollo.’ Steve knew about these things. His father was working in the advertising business. Mrs. Wu made posters. Each poster had a slogan, ‘Save Apollo, the moon tree!’ The boys and their friends were busy. Some went to shops, others walked down the streets. They told people the moon tree’s story. The whole town wanted to help so the Moon Tree Crew got hundreds of signatures. Hector and Steve took the petition to Mr. Bowman. He was a businessman who built shopping malls for towns and cities. ‘Boys, you have made this tree famous,’ he said. ’How did you do it?’ ‘My father told me how,‘ said Steve. ‘He works in advertising. He told me how important it is to have a catchy slogan and showed me how I can use petitions to get people agree on something.’ Mr. Bowman laughed. ‘When I was your age, I saw the first moon landing on TV. I was so excited. Has this tree really been to the moon? ’ ‘Yes, but it was only a seed then,’ said Hector. ‘It never actually landed on the moon.’ Steve added. ‘It only orbited the moon.’ Mr. Bowman was silent for a moment. ‘That’s close enough for me!, ‘ he said. Mr. Bowman did build a shopping mall, but he saved Apollo, the moon tree. He got the old plaque cleaned and shined. Under the old plaque, he added a new one. It said: The Moon Tree Crew saved this tree. ‘Thank you!’ said Hector and Steve. ‘No, thank you!’ said Mr. Bowman.

    Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex Unveils Moon Tree Garden, “The Eagle Has Landed” Statue to Honor Apollo 11 Crew CAPE CANAVERAL (July 12, 2019) – KENNEDY SPACE CENTER – Today, Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex kicked off the Apollo 11 50th anniversary celebrations by unveiling the Moon Tree Garden, a dramatic new accent to the grounds of the Apollo/Saturn V Center. The garden, which features 12 trees grown from seeds that orbited the Moon, also includes a George Lundeen sculpture that depicts Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins in their space suits. The foundation was created in honor of her father, who took seeds from loblolly pine, sycamore, sweet gum, redwood, and Douglas fir trees on his space mission as part of a joint U.S. Forest Service/NASA project. The seeds, which have all orbited the Moon, were later germinated and planted around the world to share the story of the mission.

The seven-foot-tall bronze statue, set upon a four-foot-tall concrete base, is a gift to Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex from Rocket Mortgage. The impressive display is being created by renowned sculptor George Lundeen of Lundeen Sculpture in Loveland, Colo. Its base will feature an engraving which honors the Apollo 11 crew and all those who made their historic spaceflight possible. It is an interesting story about the Forest Service and its small link to the Apollo program. A pollo 14 launched in the late afternoon of January 31, 1971 on what was to be our third trip to the lunar surface. Five days later Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell walked on the Moon while Stuart Roosa, a former U.S. Forest Service Smokejumper, orbited above in the command module. Packed in small containers in Roosa's personal kit were hundreds of tree seeds, part of a joint NASA/USFS project. Upon return to Earth, the seeds were germinated by the Forest Service. Known as the "Moon Trees", the resulting seedlings were planted throughout the United States (often as part of the na- tion's bicentennial in 1976) and the world. They stand as a tribute to astronaut Roosa and the Apollo program. The project began after Roosa was chosen for the Apollo 14 mission. Ed Cliff, Chief of the Forest Service, knew of Stu- art Roosa from Roosa’s days as a smokejumper and contacted Apollo 14 Astronaut and former Forest Service employee Stuart Roosa.
