POSEY* and JAMES F. GOGGANS Department of Forestry THERE HAS BEEN considerable interest in growing Cupressus (cypress) in the Southeast for several years. The Agricultural Experiment Station, Auburn University, was the first institution in the Southeast to initiate work on the cy- presses in 1937, and since that time many states have introduced Cupressus in hope of finding a species suitable for Christmas tree production. In most cases seed for trial plantings were obtained from commercial dealers without reference to seed source or form of parent tree. Many plantings yielded a high proportion of columnar-shaped trees not suitable for the Christmas tree market. It is probable that seed used in Alabama and other Southeastern States came from only a few trees of a given geo- graphic source. -

SUMMARY: Authorizes the Governor to execute games support contracts as specified, not to exceed $270 million, in connection with the site selection process for the City of Los Angeles to become the host for the 2028 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, and would establish the Olympic Games Trust Fund in the State Treasury and would, upon appropriation by the Legislature, make the money in the fund available for these purposes. Curran: The Power of Biases The Power of Biases: Anti-Chinese Attitudes in California’s Gold Mines Joe Curran A study conducted in 2015 found that 49 percent of Americans believe immigrants take jobs away from “true Americans,” and that 61 percent believe that immigrants take social services away.1 These beliefs in the negative effects of immigrants, which inform immigration policy today, have deep roots. Anti-immigrant sentiments began in the United States during the first waves of immigration from Europe in the late 18th century. Various immigrant groups faced severe discrimination throughout the 19th century, but one group was the subject of the first prominent and targeted law restricting immigration to the United States in 1882: the Chinese. -

Mayfield, III2 Introduction The cypress weevil, Eudociminus mannerheimii (Boheman), is a native insect that breeds primarily in scarred, weak- ened, or fallen bald cypress (Taxodium distichum [L.] L.C. Rich) and pond cypress (T. ascendens Brongn.). In Florida, adult feeding has caused limited wounding and girdling of pond cypress stump sprouts and planted seedlings. Small diameter bald cypress nursery stock has also been damaged by larvae tunneling through the main stem and root collar. Apart from entries in species checklists and catalogs, published information about the cypress weevil is extremely limited (Hopkins 1904, Blatchley and Leng 1916, Baker and Bambara 1999). Although the cypress weevil has not been a frequent pest of major economic importance, its occasional damage should be recognized, and the lack of information regarding its biology, potential hosts, and management, warrants further research.
