  • Sydney to Host Australia's Biggest
SYDNEY TO HOST AUSTRALIA’S BIGGEST FIGHT Embargoed Monday 17 August, 2009 The Premier of NSW, Nathan Rees today announced that Sydney will host the biggest fight ever held in Australia, with Danny Green and Roy Jones Junior set to battle for the World Cruiserweight Title in November. The news follows the knockout win by Danny Green in Mississippi – a victory which secured Green’s third world title in separate divisions. “After his sensational performance I’m sure Australian fans can’t wait to cheer Danny on in their own backyard,” Mr Rees said. Green will put his new IBO Cruiserweight belt on the line against Boxing legend Roy Jones Junior – widely regarded as one of the greatest pound for pound fighters of all time. It will be the first time Jones Jnr he has fought professionally outside of the USA. The title fight is expected to be held on the last weekend in November (28/29). “This will be the biggest fight ever staged in Australia – and it will be beamed to all points of the globe,” Mr Rees said. “Sydney gained a global reputation for delivering the biggest and best events - like the Olympics, the Rugby World Cup and World Youth Day. “Today’s announcement shows Sydney’s stamp of excellence continues to help deliver results. “Sydney is Australia’s only global city and the NSW Government is proud of that. “Sydney will host more than 30,000 competitors from all round the world in October at the 2009 World Masters Games. “And now we are the first city outside the United States to have Roy Jones Jnr in the ring as a professional.” Roy Jones Junior is the only man to have won World Title belts as a Middleweight, Super Middleweight and Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight.

Extract from Hansard [COUNCIL — Tuesday, 27 September 2011] p7703a-7714a Hon Ken Travers; Hon Giz Watson; Hon Col Holt; Hon Matt Benson-Lidholm; Hon Norman Moore PROFESSIONAL COMBAT SPORTS AMENDMENT BILL 2009 Second Reading Resumed from 1 September. HON KEN TRAVERS (North Metropolitan) [3.16 pm]: Members opposite will be pleased to know that the opposition supports the Professional Combat Sports Amendment Bill 2009 in policy—but not in detail. I will take a few minutes of the time of the house to explain why. This bill seeks to amend the Professional Combat Sports Act 1987. When this bill is passed, it will be known as the Combat Sports Act. It is intended to introduce a number of changes that go back to about 2005, when a review was conducted into the act to look at the whole question of the way in which combat sports are administered in the state. That review resulted in a number of recommendations and this bill seeks to pick those up. Secondly, it seeks to increase harm minimisation in combat sports by placing the same health and safety requirements on amateur contests as are currently enforced at the professional level. It seeks to provide the minister with the ability to approve or deny rules for combat sports contests held in Western Australia. Members may recall some years ago the significant debate about whether or not we should allow what is commonly called cage fighting or mixed martial arts in Western Australia. There was a strong debate within our community about those sports and whether or not they should take place.
