UCLA UCLA Electronic Theses and Dissertations Title Openness to the Development of the Relationship: A Theory of Close Relationships Permalink https://escholarship.org/uc/item/2030n6jk Author Page, Emily Publication Date 2021 Peer reviewed|Thesis/dissertation eScholarship.org Powered by the California Digital Library University of California UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Openness to the Development of the Relationship: A Theory of Close Relationships A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Philosophy by Emily Page 2021 © Copyright by Emily Page 2021 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Openness to the Development of the Relationship: A Theory of Close Relationships by Emily Page Doctor of Philosophy in Philosophy University of California, Los Angeles, 2021 Professor Alexander Jacob Julius, Chair In a word, this dissertation is about friendship. I begin by raising a problem related to one traditionally found within some of the philosophical literature regarding moral egalitarianism: that of partiality and friendship, except that I raise the issue of partiality within the context of one’s close relationships. From here I propose a solution to the problem based on understanding a close relationship as one in which friends possess the attitude of openness to the development of the relationship. The remainder of the dissertation is concerned with elaborating upon and explaining this conception of friendship and its consequences. In the course of doing this I propose a theory of the self and how we relate to one another, consider the importance of the psychophysical self, explore the notion of mutual recognition, reflect on relationship’s end, and, finally, explore the connections between friendship and play. -

MONDAY, 5 SEPTEMBER, 2016 IQUITOS LEADS SUNDAY YANKEE HEADED TO GOLDEN ROSE DOUBLE FOR ADLERFLUG G1 Sires= Produce S. winner Yankee Rose (Aus) (All American {Aus}) was given the go-ahead by trainer David Vandyke for Saturday=s G1 Golden Rose S. after a satisfactory work between races at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday. The 3-year-old filly has not had a straightforward start to her prep, but Vandyke told Sky Thoroughbred Central he was pleased with Sunday=s work. "She had a good blow and her heart rate was up but her recovery was good," Vandyke said. "She is a frustrating filly to train. She doesn't do a lot in training or trials and she had a joint issue a couple of weeks ago. I put the blinkers on and we saw an improved horse.@ "She was committed to the cause and really worked to the line strongly,@ he added. "Bringing her to the races and putting the blinkers on has done the trick." The Web provides an extremely large volume of texts in many languages. However, a number of problems have to be resolved in order to create collections (text corpora) which are appropriate for application in natural language processing. In this work, two related problems are addressed: cleaning a boilerplate and removing duplicate and near-duplicate content from Web data. -
Learning Objectives Listed Below
Faking Hitler The STERN scandal and its impact on the reputation of the entire European press industry TEACHING NOTES The authors prepared this case solely as a basis for class discussion and not as an endorsement, a source of primary data, or an illustration of effective or ineffective management. Although based on real events and despite occasional references to actual companies, this case is fictitious and any resemblance to actual persons or entities is coincidental. Teaching Plan This teaching plan serves as a guide for the presentation of the STERN scandal which occupied an entire industry in the 1980s, when the topics of 'fake news' and 'lying press' were still in their infancy. Thus, this case exemplifies real-life management decisions in the field of corporate brand management that scandal-causing magazine STERN as well as other European media organizations had to make. The presented teaching notes are intended to assist the presenter in the preparation, structure and organization of the ‘Faking Hitler’ case in order to facilitate an engaging discussion among the students while achieving the learning objectives listed below. It is worth to note that the case should be particularly adapted to the COVID-19 situation. Since, the audience cannot solve the case in class, Zoom, Microsoft Teams or another similar software should be used for the purpose of presenting the case and organizing the discussion. Hereby, the audience will be composed of students from the “Corporate Brand Management and Reputation” course. The document comprises a case synopsis, an argumentation on the evergreen nature of the case, learning objectives including relevant theories, discussion questions, teaching methods, an epilogue as well as or own reflection on the given case.
