In a different mood Armstrong dubbed the Tour as "the most gallant athletic endeavor in the world." He may well have been right on both occasions. The Tour de France was created by Henri Desgrange who was looking for a way to promote his cycling newspaper, L'Auto. In the first year it was a simple six-stage loop of 2,428 kilometers around France. Riders worked alone with no crew or assistants to help them along the way. In 1906, to add to the challenge, a stage was added into the Pyrenees.

Questions about a Champion "If a misdeed arises in the search for truth, it is better to exhume it rather than conceal the truth." Saint Jerome. "When I wake up in the morning, I can look in the mirror and say: yes, I'm clean. It's up to you to prove that I am guilty." Lance Armstrong, Liberation, July 24,2001. "To deal with it, the teams must be clear on ethics. Someone crosses the line? He doesn't have the right to a second chance!" Lance Armstrong, L'Equipe, April 28, 2004. Between the World Road Champion encountered in a Norwegian night club, who sipped a beer, talked candidly, laughed easily and never let the conversation falter, and the cyclist with a stem, closed face, who fended off the July crowd, protected by a bodyguard or behind the smoked glass of the team bus, ten years had passed. July 1993. In the garden of an old-fashioned hotel near Grenoble, I interviewed Armstrong for three hours. It was the first professional season for this easygoing, slightly cowboyish, and very ambitious Texan. I left with a twenty-five-page interview, the chapter of a future book11 was writing about the Tour de France. I also took with me a real admiration for this young man, whom I thought had a promising future in cycling. Eight years later, in the spring of 2001, another interview. But the Tour of 1998 had changed things. Scandals and revelations were running rampant in cycling. Would my admiration stand the test? In August 1993, it was a happy, carefree, eloquent Armstrong, whom Pierre Ballester, met the evening after he won the World Championship in Oslo.

ANTI-DOPING PRACTICE Our Anti-Doping team literally wrote the book on doping matters, having served as the principal draftsmen of the World Anti-Doping Code in 2003 and the amendments thereto in 2008, 2013 and 2019. The latest round of amendments, in which our team worked with foreign sport ministers and various sports organizations from around the world, went into effect January 1, 2021. Our Anti-Doping team co-leader, Rich Young, often referred to as the “grandfather of the anti-doping movement,” is one of the world’s leading experts on the subject of doping in sports and serves as outside counsel for the World Anti-Doping Agency, the United States Anti-Doping Agency, and the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority. We have handled high profile cases for the World Anti-Doping Agency, the United States Anti-Doping Agency and the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority and advised a variety of sports clients in connection with anti-doping matters, notably including the following select representations: • Represented the United States Anti-Doping Agency in its doping cases against Tour De France winners Lance Armstrong and Floyd Landis as well as Tyler Hamilton • Represented the United States Anti-Doping Agency in its doping case against Marion Jones and other Gold Medal winners involved in the BALCO doping scandal • Advised the National Basketball Association (NBA), Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and WTA Tour (women’s professional tennis) in connection with their drug testing programs • Advised the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

It is even more unclear how public opinion on doping differs within the population. Our questionnaire- based study for Flanders (Belgium), with a focus on doping in cycling, shows a strong disapproval of doping use by all respondents. There are statistically significant differences, though, among the population groups. Cycling fans tend to be less negative towards doping in cycling than non-cycling fans. Cycling fans also express a clear feeling of their sport being treated unfairly compared to other sports. Furthermore we observe some clear gender-based and age-based differences in opinion: women and older people are much more opposed to doping than men and younger people.
