  • Gerry Anderson's PREMISE: in the Late 1960S, the United States
Gerry Anderson’s UFO PREMISE: In the late 1960s, the United States government issued a report officially denying the existence of Unidentified Flying Objects. The government agencydesigned to look into the phenomenon, Project Blue Book, was also closed down and people were led to believe that (as far as the government was concerned) UFOs had not come to Earth. The format of the television series takes this occurrence as a cover-up by the government in an attempt to hide the fact that we were not only visited by creatures from space, but brutally attacked. Their reasoning was that mass hysteria and panic would result if the common man discovered that his world was being invaded by extraterrestrials. So, in secret, the major governments of the world created SHADO − Supreme Headquarters, Alien Defense Organi- zation. From it’scenter of operations hidden beneath a film studio (where bizarre comings and goings would remain commonplace), SHADO commands a fleet of submarines (armed with sea-to-air strikecraft), aircraft, land vehicles, satellites and a base on the Moon. MAJOR CHARACTERS: COMMANDER ED STRAKER−Leader of SHADO. He is totally dedicated to his job, almost to the point of obsession. COLONEL ALEC FREEMAN−Straker’ssecond-in-command. COLONEL PAULFOSTER−Former test pilot recruited to SHADO. CAPTAIN PETER CARLIN−Commander and interceptor pilot of Skydiver1. MISS EALAND−Straker’ssecretary for his film studio president cover. LT . Gerry Anderson had previously and successfully produced Thunderbirds, Stingray and Captain Scarlet. This cult classic follows the exploits of a boy and a girl, John and Julie, who are miniaturised by a powerful being from another galaxy (the eponymous Investigator) and sent on a dangerous mission to stop a corrupt tycoon, Karanti, from stealing a priceless 14th century masterpiece from a church. John and Julie's characters were played by Shane Rimmer and Sylvia Anderson, the voices of Scott Tracy and Lady Penelope from the Thunderbirds series. Peter Dyneley who voiced Jeff Tracy was the voice of the 'Investigator'. The twenty-three minute pilot was shot on location in Malta for the NBC Network in America, but the radio controlled models that were made for the series were prone to radio interference and often went out of control.

Now in it’s 30th Year 25th - 27th October 2019 Welcome to the first progress report for our 30th festival. This annual event has become part of our lives and we would like to thank you all for the support you have shown. We have already lined up some great guests and we are working to add a few more surprises. Please let us know what you want to see and how you think we should celebrate three decades? Guests We are pleased to announce that the following guests have confirmed that they can attend (subject to work commitments). Dana Deirdre Pauline Peart Lawrence Costello Gordon Clark Gillespie 1 A message from the Festival’s Chairman As we reach the 30th anniversary of the annual event which has brought us both friendships and a weekend when we can usually park our 1990 brains in automatic control, I have been recently reminding myself of some of the highlights (and lowlights) of the Festival which has become a 1991 real part of my life. When we started I was a relatively young man of 43 and look at me now. I believe that some of the creatures/monsters that we have seen in 1992 the films we have watched over that period have probably kept their looks better than me but what the hell, I have enjoyed almost every minute of it. 1993 What does bother me is how Tony Edwards, who started the event older than me, now seems to have found the fountain of youth and 1994 looks younger than I do! Anyway, to the point, I hope that you all enjoy the coming event, and I am grateful for the 1995 positive response received from those attending Festival number 29 last year.

31st Oct - 2nd Nov 2014 at Manchester Conference Centre Hello and welcome to the first progress report for the 25th Festival of Fantastic Films. A quarter of a century ago we had an idea that other people shared the same interests as we did and the Festival was born. Our first guest, Ray Harryhausen was warmly welcomed and undoubtedly whetted the appetites of the attendees, as over the years many of you have returned. We greatly appreciate your support. The Festival has attracted an excellent selection of guests — one reason why so many of you are so keen to return — but it is always heart-warming when the guests praise the atmosphere and that fans are keen to return. Guests such as Richard Gordon, Norman J. Warren and Stephen Volk have returned as fans. We must be doing something right. The preparations for this year are shaping up and the Committee is working hard to make this year special. The guest line-up is still developing but we are very pleased to announce that, subject to commitments, the following guests have already confirmed that they will attend: Yvonne Monlaur Luigi Cozzi Judy Matheson Me Me Lai Caroline Munro Francesca Ciardi There are several more possible guests still to be confirmed, so we look forward to announcing these as soon as we receive confirmation. • Scuttlebutt from the Spermaceti Press 2019
Jan 19 #1 Scuttlebutt from the Spermaceti Press Sherlockians (and Holmesians) gathered in New York to celebrate the Great Detective’s 165th birthday during the long weekend from Jan. 9 to 13; the (very) long weekend was filled with events, both formal and informal, and detailed reports on most of them will be available soon at the web-site of The Baker Street Irregulars <www.bakerstreetirregulars.com>. But in the meantime, here are few brief paragraphs to tide you over: The BSI’s Distinguished Speaker on Thursday evening was Ken Ludwig, award- winning author of three Sherlockian (and many more non-Sherlockian) plays; he reported that he has just completed work on his newest play “Moriarty” (in the five-actor format of “Baskerville”) and hopes it will be produced in the near future. The Irregulars and their guests gathered for the BSI annual dinner at the Yale Club, where Evelyn Herzog proposed the traditional preprandial first toast to Nelda Richards as The Woman. This was followed by the presenta- tion of a Festschrift to a thoroughly-surprised member of the BSI who was celebrating the 60th anniversary of his Investiture; immodestly, the edi- tor of this newsletter says “let me recommend this book,” which is avail- able (80 pp., $19.95) from the BSI at <www.tinyurl.com/yb5z9frc>. The annual dinner’s agenda included the usual toasts, rituals, and papers, and Mike Whelan (the “Wiggins” of the BSI) presented Birthday Honours (Ir- regular Shillings and Investitures) to Alexander Katz (“Sarasate”), John Knud-Hansen (“This Lascar Scoundrel”), Brigitte Latella (“Holmes’s Alpen- stock”), Michele Lopez (“Attenta, Pericolo”), Ira B.

20th - 22nd September 2013 at Manchester Conference Centre Welcome to the third progress report for the 24th Festival of Fantastic Films. It is always a tense time in the run up to the Festival. Guests cannot give long term commitments as the business they are in has traditionally operated on a short notice projects. That’s why we’re delighted to finally confirm the line up for the Festival. Madeline Smith and Shane Rimmer were the first to join Michael Armstrong and more recently Umberto Lenzi and Nicholas Ball have also been added, to give us what promises to be another great Festival. Madeline Smith Shane Rimmer Umberto Lenzi Nicholas Ball Obviously the programme will be packed, after 23 years we think you know what to expect. The movies are just one aspect of the Festival, albeit a significant one that occupies a lot of the different programme streams. We hope you also take time to explore the other programme items, Steve Green will be presenting the Delta Award so pop along and show some support. There are some real gems this year. Ramsey Campbell will be auctioning a host of collectables. OK, he will buy most of them himself, but he’s entertaining, so the audience don’t mind. Go and bid him up. There’s the Film Fair and few other surprises, but we know many of us just come to see old friends. We hope many of you stay around for the dead dog party quiz. George Gaddi knows how to pick the questions that’ll make Katie’s pronunciation the night’s entertainment by itself.
