Independent Television Producers in England
Negotiating Dependence: Independent Television Producers in England Karl Rawstrone A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of the West of England, Bristol for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts and Creative Industries, University of the West of England, Bristol November 2020 77,900 words. Abstract The thesis analyses the independent television production sector focusing on the role of the producer. At its centre are four in-depth case studies which investigate the practices and contexts of the independent television producer in four different production cultures. The sample consists of a small self-owned company, a medium- sized family-owned company, a broadcaster-owned company and an independent- corporate partnership. The thesis contextualises these case studies through a history of four critical conjunctures in which the concept of ‘independence’ was debated and shifted in meaning, allowing the term to be operationalised to different ends. It gives particular attention to the birth of Channel 4 in 1982 and the subsequent rapid growth of an independent ‘sector’. Throughout, the thesis explores the tensions between the political, economic and social aims of independent television production and how these impact on the role of the producer. The thesis employs an empirical methodology to investigate the independent television producer’s role. It uses qualitative data, principally original interviews with both employers and employees in the four companies, to provide a nuanced and detailed analysis of the complexities of the producer’s role. Rather than independence, the thesis uses network analysis to argue that a television producer’s role is characterised by sets of negotiated dependencies, through which professional agency is exercised and professional identity constructed and performed. -
The Fan-Fic Writer's Guide to Punctuation
By popular request (well, I like it, anyway): THE FAN-FIC WRITER’S GUIDE TO PUNCTUATION – Part 1 by Hazel Köhler Introduction Punctuation can be a minefield, but an aberrant apostrophe or a misplaced comma can, at best, render your story a little confusing, or, at worst, make it incomprehensible. What sometimes makes matters worse is that no-one has ever accused the English language of consistency. For every rule, there are a dozen exceptions, and that’s only the UK English variety! In my several years as a fan-fic reader and writer, I’ve noticed that there are several differences between accepted usage in the UK and the US. I’ve written this guide from the point of view of a UK English user – Americans and other foreigners, please talk amongst yourselves if you see something that you learned differently, then let me know, so I don’t annoy non-British writers for whom I beta-read! The Aberrant Apostrophe Of all punctuation marks, the apostrophe is the most widely misused. A little while ago, I read a lovely description of how to work out the correct placing of an apostrophe – it’s the dirty fingerprint left over after a letter or two were wiped away from between two words. So, taking that as our starting point: 1 – It’s versus its I wish I had a pound for every time I’ve corrected this one. I’d be sitting on a beach in the Seychelles right now, sipping some luscious drink or other from a coconut shell. -

They place both their arms underneath the instrument crate, and struggle together to move it out of the way. BAGGAGE HANDLER 2 (grunts, while moving crate) Take your hand over... (still struggling, continues grunting) ...not too much. They lift it up. BAGGAGE HANDLER 2 (gives a big shove) Steady. Baggage Handler 1's foot steps on a violin case, causing it to smash. They put down the crate for a moment. 2 BAGGAGE HANDLER 2 (annoyed) Oh, be bothered - look what you did, right on that fiddle case! They lift it up again and move away from the instruments. BAGGAGE HANDLER 2 So... (grunts) ...easy now. The green Mysteron rings slide over the smashed violin. Baggage Handler 2 looks on in surprise as he sees there is another violin, intact, right next to the destroyed one. -

Jonathan Bignell Television for children: problems of national specificity and globalisation In the developed nations of Europe, and in the USA, it has long been assumed that television should address children. Thus, notions of what ‘children’ are have been constructed, and children are routinely discussed as an audience category and as a market for programmes. -
