The Edward R. Murrow of Docudramas and Documentary
Media History Monographs 12:1 (2010) ISSN 1940-8862 The Edward R. Murrow of Docudramas and Documentary By Lawrence N. Strout Mississippi State University Three major TV and film productions about Edward R. Murrow‟s life are the subject of this research: Murrow, HBO, 1986; Edward R. Murrow: This Reporter, PBS, 1990; and Good Night, and Good Luck, Warner Brothers, 2005. Murrow has frequently been referred to as the “father” of broadcast journalism. So, studying the “documentation” of his life in an attempt to ascertain its historical role in supporting, challenging, and/or adding to the collective memory and mythology surrounding him is important. Research on the docudramas and documentary suggests the depiction that provided the least amount of context regarding Murrow‟s life (Good Night) may be the most available for viewing (DVD). Therefore, Good Night might ultimately contribute to this generation (and the next) having a more narrow and skewed memory of Murrow. And, Good Night even seems to add (if that is possible) to Murrow‟s already “larger than life” mythological image. ©2010 Lawrence N. Strout Media History Monographs 12:1 Strout: Edward R. When did the rascals of “The Front Page” turn into the scoundrels of “Absence of Malice”? Why did reporters stop being heroes played by Clark Gable, Bette Davis and Cary Grant and become bit actors playing rogues dogging at the heels of Bruce Willis and Goldie Hawn? It all happened in the dark as people watched movies and sat at home listening to radio and watching television. “The Image of the Journalist in Popular Culture” explores the continuing, evolving relationship between the American people and their media. It investigates the conflicting images of reporters in movies and television and demonstrates, decade by decade, their impact on the American public’s perception of newsgatherers in the 20th century. The class shows how it happened first on the big screen, then on the small screens in homes across the country. The class investigates the image of the cinematic newsgatherer from silent films to the 1990s, from Hildy Johnson of “The Front Page” and Charles Foster Kane of “Citizen Kane” to Jane Craig in “Broadcast News.” The reporter as the perfect movie hero. -

Sir: I have the honor of transmitting a brief report on women in radio prepared by Frances W. Kerr of the Women’s Bureau staff. The plan for the report was pre pared after consultation with the Association of Women Broadcasters. The mimeo graph edition in which the report was originally issued having been exhausted, it is now offered for printing to meet an unanticipated demand. The report is not a technical assessment of the training required, or of the volume of demand for women and the extent of their opportunities in radio, but is rather illustrative of what, as indicated by their biographical sketches, some women have been able to achieve. The report will be of special interest to women preparing for jobs and careers, and it is expected that its greatest usefulness will be to the 150 colleges and to the high schools which conduct radio workshops, to the many other colleges and high schools which offer courses in radio arts and crafts, and to the various radio institutes and professional schools. -

The productions were planned for a New York City studio, but all of the programs were produced in Hollywood. The intent was for the radio version to evolve into a television series, but that never came to fruition. Nevertheless, in the year and a half that it was on the air, the series captivated listeners, attracted reputable sponsors, and garnered awards for itself and its star. Radio producer Don Sharpe was responsible for packaging this show (originally called The Defense Rests ). He produced an audition record in April of 1951, and obtained a tentative agreement from NBC to air the show that summer. But by May, NBC had begun a belt-tightening policy designed to get more work out of their New York berthed directors and production staff. NBC required that their summer replacement programs originate in Manhattan, not the West Coast, since the latter would necessitate hiring additional staffers. The two leads in Mercedes McCambridge the program, Mercedes McCambridge (as Marty Ellis Bryant) and Howard Jack French has been researching radio history for over 30 years. His book Culver (as Judson Barnes), “Private Eyelashes: Radio’s Lady Detectives” won the Agatha Award for were radio veterans, but Best Non-Fiction and is available through Radio Spirits. -

Take some interesting people, add in a little adventure, some love, or even some hate; put it all in an interesting place, and maybe an interesting time, and you’ve got a story fit for an opera. Opera is drama. Take the story you’ve chosen and put the words into dialogue for actors to say. Tell the story in a creative way and add in some heroes and heroines or queens and kings. Maybe a monster—or four. Make sure there is a clear conflict in the story that the characters must overcome. Put your actors in costumes and makeup, and put them on a stage with some great scenery in order to illuminate the characters. Opera is music. Write some fantastic music for your play. Instead of having the actors speak, have them sing…everything! When they get really happy or mad, have them sing high and loud! When they are trying to express an important emotion, let them sing something longer to show off a little.
