The fire quickly spread to all 6 coaches of the train as well as to another train in the opposite direction which stopped alongside, killing all the passengers trapped within. The complete burning of a total of 12 subway coaches generated intense heat and poisonous smoke which further infused the adjacent station burning down the facilities, signposts and ceiling of the platform. More than 180 people lost their lives while 147 or more were injured due to this catastrophic incident. The objective of this presentation is to share on the findings and lessons learnt following a post- mortem study and possible considerations to avoid potential recurrence. Synopsis of Sharing Item MSc in Safety Critical Systems Engineering Teo Juey Hian, System Safety Manager, DSO Is MSc in system safety a requirement for safety practitioner? Training on the job and project experience is generally more important than possession of specific qualification. However, given the opportunity, a formal safety education would provide a broader and deeper understanding of system safety principles. Juey Hian will share his MSc study experience in system safety at University of York and some interesting topics covered in the course: GSN and ALARP principles. Synopsis of Sharing Item Risk Assessment Aspects of Lightning Protection in Singapore Er Chua Hian Koon, Head Capability Development (Electrical & Mechanical Systems), Building & Infrastructure Programme Centre, DSTA Tropical weather makes Singapore one of the world’s lightning capital. Although the unpredictable nature of thunderstorms cannot guarantee any individual or asset absolute protection against a lightning strike, measures can be taken to reduce injury and damage. This presentation shares on various aspects of protection against lightning risks based on Singapore Standard SS 555:2010 (Code of Practice for Protection Against Lightning). It touches on the general principles of lightning and the protection measures in the Singapore Standard. The presentation will also discuss the risk assessment and adequacy of protection against lightning of buildings in Singapore. .
