Winter Olympians on Stamps - 1972 WINTER OLYMPIANS ON STAMPS - 1972 This is an appendix to my “Winter Olympics 1972 on Stamps” collection. It contains stamps (and other philatelic materials) that depict athletes who participated in the Winter Olympics 1972 -- even though said depictions have nothing to do with said Olympics. No matter what the catalogue may include or not in­ clude there is no law that says what the collector must have in his album. It is his own possession to build and expand as he chooses. It is only when the collector wishes to exhibit for competition that certain maxims come into play; then the collector loses some of the freedom he had before. Yet exhibiting need not enjoin a collector from remaining individualistic in his approach, nor does his collection have to be a carbon copy of other similar exhibita This is especially noticeable when viewing exhibits of Olympic Games stamps. Excluding the early Greek Olympic stamps, a collector would not find it too difficult or too expensive to put together a 'complete* collection of the basic stamps. How, then, can an enthusiast put his individual touch on his own exhibit except through a different type of mounting? In my opinion, there are enough unusual items on the philatelic marketplace that a collector could add for nearly every Olympiad, some expensive but many rather nominal in price, that would add sparkle to an exhibit. All of the items mentioned below are listed in various books and guides, in­ cluding Ira Seeoacher's Handbook of Sports Stamps. However, I would like to point out some of these that seem to be overlooked in many of the exhibits.

    Prior Winter Olympic Nations that No Longer Exist CZECHOSLOVAKIA (TCH) Olympic History: Athletes from what later became Czechoslovakia first competed at the 1900 Olympics, representing Bohemia. Bohemian athletes also competed in 1906, 1908, and 1912. In 1920, Czechoslovakia sent its first true Olympic team to Antwerp. From 1920-1992 the only Olympic Games not attended by Czechoslovakia, including the Olympic Winter Games, was the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Czechoslovakia excelled in many different sports at the Olympics. The country’s most noteworthy athletes were distance runner Emil Zátopek and female gymnast Věra Čáslavská. Czechoslovakia peacefully split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia on 1 January 1993. Czechoslovakia competed at 16 Olympic Winter Games, as follows: 1924, 1928, 1932, 1936, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972, 1976, 1980, 1984, 1988, and 1992. Czechoslovakia also competed in ice hockey at the 1920 Olympic Games. Während die Rennrodler ihr Saison-Highlight mit den Weltmeisterschaften Mitte Februar im lettischen Sigulda fahren werden, starten die Bob- und Skeleton-Cracks des BSD Ende Februar und Anfang März bei den Heim-Weltmeister- schaften im sauerländischen Winterberg.     For Immediate Release February 28, 2006 Media Contact: John Dakin (970) 949-1999 [email protected] GERMAN OLYMPIC TRIPLE MEDALIST ROSI MITTERMAIER HONORED AS 2006 LEGEND OF HONOR AT COUNTRYWIDE AMERICAN SKI CLASSIC VAIL, Colorado--A very special ceremony will round out the 2006 Countrywide American Ski Classic social festivities Saturday evening, March 25, as one of Germany’s most prolific ski racers will be honored as Rosi Mittermaier is inducted into the International Ski Hall of Fame at the Legends Banquet. “Rosi Mittermaier is a tremendous ambassador for the sport of skiing,” explained Ceil Folz, president of the Vail Valley Foundation. “Her competitive career ranks among the all time greats, while her professional endeavors continue to promote and further skiing at all levels. It is indeed an honor for us to welcome Rosi to the International Ski Hall of Fame as 2006’s Legend of Honor.” A triple Olympic medalist at the 1976 Games in Innsbruck, Austria, Mittermaier claimed the gold in Downhill and Slalom, while mining silver in Giant Slalom. She also collected an FIS World Championships gold medal in Combined at the Innsbruck Games. Mittermaier missed the Olympic hat trick by a mere 12-hundredths of a second as Canadian Kathy Kreiner spoiled the celebration with the Giant Slalom gold. One half second ahead of Kreiner’s pace at the midway timing split, the German lost precious fractions of a second when she took too direct a line into one of the final gates. The season-long 1976 campaign proved to be a special one for Mittermaier.
