C.J. KETTLER President, King Features C.J. KETTLER President, King Features C.J. Kettler is the president of King Features, a division of Hearst Newspapers, and serves as a HearstLab Scout. Kettler joined Hearst in 2017 and is leading the evolution of King Features, which boasts a portfolio of world-class IP including comics, puzzles and pop culture brand franchises such as Popeye, the Phantom, Mandrake, Flash Gordon, Betty Boop and Cuphead. She is focused on digital transformation, entertainment, merchandising/licensing and direct-to-consumer businesses. The Cuphead Show!, an animated series of 1930s-inspired cartoons, is set to debut on Netflix in mid-2021. A media industry leader with broad management and digital experience, Kettler was EVP, consumer brands and strategy, at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt until May 2017, where she successfully transitioned Channel One News into an educational product, launched Curious World, a mobile subscription service for millennial families, and produced the Emmy-nominated animated series Carmen Sandiego, which premiered on Netflix in January 2019. She joined Channel One News, owned by private equity firm Zelnick Media, as CEO and chair in November 2012 and led the sale of the company to Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (NASDAQ: HMHC) in May 2014. From 2008 to 2013, Kettler was a partner at Propeller Partners, LLC, a strategic advisory firm for large media companies, venture and private equity investors in the digital sector. In November 2007, Kettler was named president of Travelzoo (NASDAQ: TZOO), a publicly held consumer internet company with $150 million in revenue at the time. In 2005, as founder and CEO, she created and launched LIME, the first multichannel green lifestyle brand, having secured funding from Steve Case’s Revolution, LLC. Under her leadership, the LIME brand was introduced simultaneously across multiple media platforms and sold to Gaiam (NASDAQ: GAIA) in July 2007. Beginning in 2001, Kettler served as managing director and operating executive at Solera Capital, a private equity firm with $250 million under management. She was co-president of Latina magazine, one of Solera’s portfolio companies, and was instrumental in evaluating investment opportunities in the media industry. Kettler was a founding member of the Oxygen Media management team, serving as president of sales and marketing, where she managed all cross-platform integrated sales, marketing and affiliate relationships. From 1987, Kettler was a founding partner at Sunbow Entertainment, a top-ranked independent program supplier, where, as president and CEO, she negotiated the sale of the company to Sony Music Entertainment in 1999. Kettler has amassed significant management experience in a wide range of leadership roles straddling digital media, consumer brands, content development, production and distribution. She also held senior executive positions at MTV Networks/Viacom, McCann-Erickson and CBS. Kettler holds a bachelor’s degree from Smith College, serves on the NorthSouth Productions Board (a Hearst investment) and is also a board director for the Environmental Working Group. .

    The Gender Fluidity of Krazy Kat By Gabrielle Bellot January 19, 2017 “Krazy Kat,” George Herriman’s exuberant and idiosyncratic newspaper comic, was never broadly popular. From the beginning, though, it found fans among writers and artists. P. G. Wodehouse compared it favorably to Wagner’s “Parsifal”; Jack Kerouac later said it influenced the Beats. The strip ran from 1913 until 1944, the year that Herriman died. It is set in a dreamlike place called Coconino County, where a black cat named Krazy loves a white mouse named Ignatz, who throws bricks at Krazy’s head. Krazy interprets the bricks as “love letters.” Meanwhile, a police-officer dog, Offisa Pup, tries to protect Krazy, with whom he is smitten. The structure of the strip was built on reversals: a cat loves a mouse, a dog protects a feline, and, at a time when anti-miscegenation laws held sway in most of the United States, a black animal yearns for a white one. That last detail took on additional resonance, in 1971, when Arthur Asa Berger published a story about Herriman’s birth certificate. The certificate described Herriman’s race as “colored,” Berger revealed, to the astonishment of many readers (Ralph Ellison among them). Herriman was born in New Orleans, in 1880, to a mixed-race family; his great-grandfather, Stephen Herriman, was a white New Yorker who had children with a “free woman of color,” Justine Olivier, in what was then a common social arrangement in New Orleans called plaçage. The show will feature his original comic strip illustrations from the years 2008 to 2012. About the Artist: Hy Eisman was born March 27, 1927, in Paterson, N.J. He began his career when he created a comic strip for his high school newspaper. After a brief stint in the military, Eisman worked as ghost artist for the popular Kerry Drake comic strip. He soon turned his pen to the comic-book industry, drawing for various publishers of such titles as Nancy, The Munsters, Tom and Jerry and Little Lulu. Eisman's career as a cartoonist took off in 1967, when he started to draw Little Iodine. He really brought the adventures of the bratty, pony-tailed Iodine to life. He left that strip in 1986 to chronicle the adventures of those two more-famous brats, The Katzenjammer Kids, the world's oldest continuing comic strip. In 1994, Eisman added another comic legend to his repertoire when he started drawing the Sunday Popeye strip, which stars Popeye, the salty sailor man, and his crew of lovable co-stars Olive Oyl, Swee' Pea, Wimpy and Bluto who were created by E.C. Segar for his comic strip Thimble Theatre in 1919. Popeye made his first appearance in 1929. He was an instant sensation who would go on to star in hundreds of cartoons, comic books, his own radio show and even a live-action feature film starring Robin Williams.

The three performances that I examine are: George M. Cohan’s production of Little Johnny ii Jones (1904), Eleanor Powell’s “Tribute to Bill Robinson” in Honolulu (1939), and Terry- Toons’ cartoon, “The Dancing Shoes” (1949). These performances share an obvious move away from the use of blackface makeup within a minstrel context, and a move towards the masked enjoyment in “black culture” as it contributes to the development of a uniquely American form of entertainment. In bringing these three disparate performances into dialogue I illuminate the many ways in which American entertainment has been built upon an Africanist aesthetic at the same time it has generally disparaged the black body.

(2015): 129-146 Sergio Aragonés Marginalizes Francoism in the Exile Newspaper España Libre (NYC) MONTSE FEU Abstract Sergio Aragonés is an award-winning and celebrated Mad Magazine cartoonist whose prolific career includes his bestselling comicsGroo the Wanderer and Boogeyman, among others. However, his anti-Francoist cartoons published in the exile newspaper España Libre (1939-1977, NYC) have not been studied. Using an interdisciplinary theoretical approach to humor, I examine the social function of selected cartoons by Aragonés. The drawings, published from 1962 to 1965, exposed the political persecution exerted by Francisco Franco to a global readership. His front- page cartoons also informed and emotionally sustained the dissenting working-class resistance under the regime and abroad. This edition includes information on 725 elephants, 78 more than the last edition which was published in 2007. 13 of these animals were captive born. The remaining 65 additional elephants were added because we received historical animal records that validated their existence. Of the 725 elephants in the Studbook, 269 (53.216) are living and 145 (31.114) are currently housed in AZA facilities. The “Lost To Follow Up” section lists 9 male and 60 female elephants whose current location is unknown to us. The “Undocumented” section lists 31 male and 203 female elephants that we believe are individuals who existed in North America at one time, however, we lack any official supporting documentation to give them official studbook numbers. There is a chance that some of these elephants already have studbook numbers under different house names, it is also likely that some of the undocumented elephants are duplicates of one another. It is important that we have appropriate supporting documentation to avoid assigning more than one studbook number to the same elephant.
