PHENND GEAR UP 2018 - 2019

OVERVIEW OF PHENND GEAR UP

The Philadelphia Higher Education Network for Neighborhood Development (PHENND), operating under the fiscal sponsorship of the University of Pennsylvania, engages multiple campuses across the region to support the GEAR UP CRCC (College Readiness Collaborative Communities) objectives through direct service. PHENND manages a cohort of campus partners who in turn, recruit, train, place and manage college student volunteers (GEAR UP Coaches) using a “College Positive Volunteerism” framework. Primary activities include tutoring in math, English and other core subjects, college visits, and panel speakers for the 10th and 11th grade cohorts at GEAR UP schools.

PARTNER UNIVERSITIES: ● Bryn Mawr College ● Drexel University ● La Salle University ● Saint Joseph’s University ● Temple University ● University of Pennsylvania University-School Partnerships Development

An intended outcome of the PHENND GEAR UP initiative is a deepening of the relationships between colleges/universities and K-12 schools. University-School Partnerships are designed to provide a direct link between institutions of higher education and the classroom. A partnership is created when a college/university and a K-12 school (or a grade/class within a school) mutually agree to work together projects and activities that will enhance the quality of education for students while improving skills critical to success in college. University-School partnerships promote cooperation and encourage the exchange of expertise, resources and services. The overall mission of university-school partnerships is to enhance the quality of education in K-12 schools and the ability of students to be prepared to enter post-secondary education.

GOALS FOR PHENND GEAR UP CRCC UNIVERSITY-SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS ARE: 1. Expand and deepen support of the K-12 school from the college/university partner throughout the various departments, centers, and programs on campus. 2. Establish the college/university’s presence within the school. 3. Increase opportunities for college student involvement at the school beyond the role of academic support as a GEAR UP Coach. 4. Increase access to resources and expand opportunities for the school community to participate in campus-based activities.

2018 - 2019 BY THE NUMBERS

COLLEGE STUDENT VOLUNTEERS During the 2018-2019 school year, 279 individual college students contributed a total of 5,823 hours to support GEAR UP (including direct services, training and program support).

The majority of these college students were placed as GEAR UP Coaches at the high schools providing academic support and college readiness activities for students in grades 10 and 11, both during the school day and afterschool. In addition, some students provided support by leading campus visits, developing programming, recruiting, majors fairs/conferences, or other behind the scenes tasks.

As part of our efforts to deepen the partnerships between colleges/universities and the GEAR UP High Schools, some college student volunteers also served students in grades 9 and 12. While outside of the GEAR UP cohort, this aligns with our goal to embed partnerships throughout each school to increase the likelihood that services continue beyond the life of the GEAR UP grant.

Page 4

PHENND GEAR UP 2018 - 2019

SERVICE AT GEAR UP HIGH SCHOOLS 224 GEAR UP Coaches served a total of 4,220 hours at eleven (11) of the GEAR UP high schools. Schools receiving the most services were West Philadelphia High School, Ben Franklin High School, and Overbrook High School.

GEAR UP Coaches served a total of 1,428 students in the GEAR UP cohort (grades 10 & 11). GEAR UP coaches served the most students at Edison High School, which also has the largest overall enrollment out of all of the GEAR UP high schools.

Page 5

PHENND GEAR UP 2018 - 2019

GEAR UP COACH ACTIVITIES

PHENND GEAR UP Coaches served students primarily in the GEAR UP Cohort of grades 10 and 11 (78%). Coaches provided two primary services:

● Academic Support/Tutoring - This occurred either in the classroom, during lunch, pull-out sessions, or during after school. Tutoring was either in small groups, one-on-one. Coaches also provided support during classroom instruction. ● College Coaching/Mentoring - Coaches helped students with Naviance, College Board, and other online tools. Coaches also held informal conversations about college life during tutoring sessions, or held formal discussions in the classroom in the form of a College Journey Talk.

Coaches served a majority of their time at the school sites providing academic support and tutoring (80%).

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT BY COLLEGE STUDENT VOLUNTEERS

College student volunteers provided 801 hours of support to GEAR UP initiatives outside of serving as GEAR UP coaches. Volunteers and college student interns provided a variety of additional supports including:

● Assisting with Enhanced College Visits ● Organizing Majors Fairs and a Majors Conference ● Assisting with data entry and internal evaluation ● Leading reflection sessions with GEAR UP Coaches ● Developing programming for GEAR UP students ● Recruiting volunteers and creating a social media strategy

GEAR UP TRAINING

GEAR UP Coaches received 802 hours of training and support. On campus training included introductions to College Positive Volunteerism, Cultural Awareness and orientations to GEAR UP and their school site. Coaches also participated in regular check-in sessions and reflections with Program Coordinators and student leaders. Fall All Campus Training October 2018

Held at Temple University, 44 students from Drexel, Bryn Mawr, Penn, SJU, and Temple gathered on October 20, 2018. The purpose of this event was to provide additional training for GEAR UP coaches, and to provide a space for coaches to network across campuses.

TRAUMA INFORMED CARE 101 Allison Gibbs, MSW, LCSW, provided a workshop introducing coaches to Trauma Informed Care. This workshop provided an overall understanding of the various types of trauma, its prevalence and its impact on brain development in both children and adults, and the role that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) play in young adult mental health. Whether it is family disorganization, unstable housing, drug use, a criminal history, or a myriad of other problems, students who walk through the doors of our schools often have multiple obstacles to their success. This training provides an introduction to what is trauma, and covers how to use a trauma-informed framework to change the question from “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?” Coaches learned different strategies to engage students with significant trauma histories. Coaches also explored a broader perspective on the role they can play in continuing the trauma conversation with their peers.

COLLEGE POSITIVE VOLUNTEERISM FOR 10TH AND 11TH GRADES As a follow up to our ongoing training on College Positive Volunteerism offered to coaches during orientation on their campuses, this workshop, offered coaches tools for stimulating student awareness of the opportunities college offers, sharing strategies for college preparedness, and encouraging students to pursue a college education. In this training, coaches learned how to utilize a CPV approach to engage specifically with 10th and 11th graders, and how tools such as Naviance and RoadTrip Nation can be used to spark discussions around college and career goals. The workshop was presented by GEAR UP Campus Coordinators Candace Eaton (University of Pennsylvania) and Rachel Howe (Temple).

Page 7

PHENND GEAR UP 2018 - 2019

COACH NETWORKING An important of PHENND GEAR UP is providing opportunities for college students to build connections across our institutional partners. Coaches took the True Colors Personal and Leadership Style quiz, and explored common dimensions and traits of personal and leadership styles amongst coaches from across our campus partners. In groups, coaches reflected on their personality and approach to work, building an appreciation for diversity and reducing conflicts. Coaches also participated in teams to answer trivia questions about the college application process and college culture. Spring All Campus Training February 2019

Held also at Temple University, 50 students from Drexel, La Salle, Penn, and Temple gathered on February 23, 2019. This training primarily focused on building the skills and networks of coaches who were returning to the program after having volunteered at least for a semester.

GEAR UP TEACHER PANEL GEAR UP coaches the amazing opportunity to hear from a panel of three amazing teachers at GEAR UP High Schools, Ismael Jiminez of KCAPA, Dawn Johnson of Ben Franklin, and Emily Cohen, of Edison High School. The panel was moderated by PHENND Director Hillary Kane. Panelist discussed how to be an effective GEAR UP Coach while in the classroom, and answered questions from attendees about teaching as a career.

COMMON GEAR UP SCHOOL SCENARIOS GEAR UP Coaches encounter many different situations working in GEAR UP classrooms, from what to do if there is an unexpected substitute teacher, to your first day in a new class. This workshop engaged coaches through active role plays, as they practice and discussed different common scenarios from the day in the life of a GEAR UP Coach. Presented by Molly Southwell, GEAR UP Coordinator for Bryn Mawr College/Saint Joseph’s University & Rachel Howe GEAR UP Coordinator for Temple

POST-SECONDARY SUCCESS WORKSHOP This workshop provided training for GEAR UP Coaches in an advising role. With the students in the GEAR UP cohort starting to plan their next steps after college, PHENND GEAR UP Coaches have the amazing opportunity to help guide them along the way. In this workshop coaches practiced skills for active listening and how to discuss a student’s goals and motivation and redirect them onto a path towards success. Coaches engaged in materials from NACADA, the global community for college advising at Kansas State University, on tools for effective community and dialogue with students. Presented by Candace Eaton (University of Pennsylvania), Brittany Lewis (Temple University), and Caitlin Fritz (PHENND).

PHENND GEAR UP 2018 - 2019 COLLEGE MAJORS FAIRS AND CONFERENCE

Through GEAR UP, Temple University has worked to develop a Program Committee, a group of Temple student leaders committed to the GEAR UP initiative, through the development of programming for GEAR UP students, and training for GEAR UP coaches. The Program Committee, with the leadership of Temple student intern, Marci Monaco-Vavrik, developed two opportunities for students to learn more about potential college majors from current college students: the College Majors Fair and the College Majors Conference. College Majors Fairs

Similar to a college fair or a career fair, the College Majors Fair is an opportunity for students to learn about various different college majors and network with current college students. Each College Majors Fair was held at the high school. Students from Temple, Drexel and Penn brought literature and answered questions about their specific majors. Some students even brought props, including a model human brain to engage with students on the study of Psychology.

GEAR UP students engage in interactive activities, including answering questions on a college majors bingo. Students also had the opportunity to reflect on what they learned from the experience. College Majors Fairs were held at the following schools in 2018-2019. We are looking forward to hosting more in 2019-2020.

● November 2018 - Edison High School ● December 2018 - Ben Franklin High School ● April 2019 - Frankford High School

Overall 31 college students volunteered at the College Majors Fairs.

Page 9

PHENND GEAR UP 2018 - 2019 College Majors Conference – Temple University April 26

The Majors Conference was a follow-up to the Majors Fairs held at Ben Franklin and Edison High Schools in the fall. Sixty-five (65) students attended the majors conference from Benjamin Franklin and Edison High Schools. Students were welcomed with breakfast and a team building followed by talks on College 101 and Financial Aid 101 from Temple University staff. Aaron Smith, aka "The Rapping Professor," of Temple University set the tone for the day with a keynote talk.

Students then attended one of seven workshops in a field of their choice. The Workshops were organized by students from Drexel, Penn, and Temple, and included the following majors. All workshops included a focus on careers linked to the respective majors.

● Engineering - students built bridges ● Humanities ● Psychology - students took personality tests ● Urban and Environmental Studies (How to build a city) ● Geology - students did several hands-on mini labs, including how earthquakes work ● Chemistry - students conducted hands on experiments ● Nursing

During a buffet lunch, students learned about real college life and ask questions from a college student panel. Altogether, 36 college student volunteers from Temple, Penn and Drexel helped to put together the conference, many whom were volunteering with GEAR UP for the first time.

COLLEGE JOURNEY TALKS

As a framework for how to talk to GEAR UP students about college life, Temple University students developed a College Journey Guide. This guide provided an outline of questions and prompts for GEAR UP coaches to engage in brief, 20-30 minute discussion with students, either in classrooms, afterschool, or at the GEAR UP Manager's school-based office. Discussion topics included:

● Describe the college-going culture of your early life, including family, school, and local culture. ● Describe yourself as a high school student. ● What made you apply for college? Where did you apply? ● What did you do to prepare for college? ● How did you decide what major to pick? ● Describe your academic/personal life experience in college.

To help students engage in the discussion, Temple GEAR UP Coach Jasmine Twyman developed some scenario prompts about real college life such as:

● It is Friday evening at 6 pm, you have two different classes, each requiring you to submit a 2 page paper tonight at midnight, you feel completely overwhelmed, how should you approach this stressful situation? or... ● You live in a dorm, your roommates keep drinking your favorite juice out of the mini fridge, you have already asked them not to do that 2 times before. What do you do now?

Overall 10 Coaches from Temple University conducted 9 College Journey Talks at the following schools:

● Edison High School ● Frankford High School ● Kensington High School ● Kensington Creative and Performing Arts High School ● Penn Treaty High School

ENHANCED COLLEGE VISITS

An Enhanced College Visit (ECV) is an engaging experience on a college campus for high school or elementary students to interact with college students and faculty through activities related to college life, college academics, or college extracurriculars. Every ECV is customized with the resources availability, needs, and interest levels of each partnering college and K-12 group in mind.

Through GEAR UP, PHENND’s partner campuses have worked to create ECVs for students in the GEAR UP cohort. Generally students also receive a campus tour and eat lunch in the student cafeteria.

PHENND partner campuses hosted nine (9) ECVs for the GEAR UP high schools. Examples of some of the activities GEAR UP students participated in during an ECV include:

● Creating solar cells in a chemistry lab ● A tour of a maker-space with a 3-D printer ● Visiting an engineering lab used for developing assistive technologies ● Hands-on science activities that modeled the structure of DNA ● Scavenger hunts through a biodiversity lab ● Touring a green roof ● A panel discussion with first-generation students

Page 12

PHENND GEAR UP 2018 - 2019

WORKING WITH TEACHERS

PHENND GEAR UP worked with 83 teachers at the GEAR UP High Schools. Most partner teachers hosted a GEAR UP Coach in the classroom. Each semester Metis Associates has assisted PHENND in distributing a survey to teachers that hosted a GEAR UP coach. Highlights include:

● 77% of teachers surveyed found the partnership with a university to bring coaches into the classroom was either worthwhile or very worthwhile. ● 77% of teachers surveyed felt that the coaches provided at least some impact in exposing students to positive role models. ● 67% of teachers surveyed found the coaches had an impact in promoting student engagement and/or participation in class activities.

Each year our partner campuses continue to build deeper relationships with classroom teachers, and these relationships are a key piece to sustaining the university partnerships beyond the GEAR UP grant. A great example of this is the science outreach partnership High School LINKS between SJU and Christina Johnson at Overbrook High School. For three semesters now Ms. Johnson has worked with SJU faculty member Dr. Brian Forster and SJU Biology students to engage her students in hands-on science activities and Enhanced College Visits to SJU’s biology labs. In addition Dr. Forster and Ms. Johnson co-lead an Act 48 Professional Development session with Overbrook High School science teachers about how to utilize and incorporate the new Celestin Microscopes into hands-on lesson plans.
