The Cinema of Oliver Stone
Interviews Stone on Stone Between 2010 and 2014 we interviewed Oliver Stone on a number of occasions, either personally or in correspondence by email. He was always ready to engage with us, quite literally. Stone thrives on the cut- and- thrust of debate about his films, about himself and per- ceptions of him that have adorned media outlets around the world throughout his career – and, of course, about the state of America. What follows are transcripts from some of those interviews, with- out redaction. Stone is always at his most fascinating when a ques- tion leads him down a line of theory or thinking that can expound on almost any topic to do with his films, or with the issues in the world at large. Here, that line of thinking appears on the page as he spoke, and gives credence to the notion of a filmmaker who, whether loved or loathed, admired or admonished, is always ready to fight his corner and battle for what he believes is a worthwhile, even noble, cause. Oliver Stone’s career has been defined by battle and the will to overcome criticism and or adversity. The following reflections demonstrate why he remains the most talked about, and combative, filmmaker of his generation. Stuart1 puts citizenship and the public at the heart of the purpose of media coverage of legal proceedings: Commentary and reporting on the criminal justice system is at the core of the First Amendment values, for the operation and integrity of that system is of crucial import to citizens concerned with the administration of government. Secrecy of judicial action can only breed ignorance and distrust of courts and suspicion concerning the competence and impartiality of judges; free and robust reporting, criticism, and debate can contribute to public understanding of the rule of law and to comprehension of the functioning of the entire criminal justice system, as well as improve the quality of that system by subjecting it to the cleansing effects of exposure and public accountability.2 That is, media coverage of legal proceedings should further the public understanding of those proceedings and of the legal system generally and should foster oversight over its functioning. Unfortunately, much coverage of legal proceedings now serves to increase ratings rather than to increase the public’s understanding of the justice system.3 Moreover, examples like early coverage of the Duke lacrosse case show that the press can exacerbate—rather than expose—abuses of the judicial system and the legal system generally. Land graduated from Princeton University (A.B., 1969), New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (Th.M., 1972), and Oxford University (D.Phil., 1980). Upon completing his doctoral studies Land served as vice president for academic affairs at Criswell College in Dallas (1980-1988) and as administrative assistant to Governor Bill Clements of Texas (1987-1988). He served as president of the SBC Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission from 1988 to 2013. Dr. Land moved the Commission to more conservative positions on social issues such as sanctity of life and homosexuality. -

Psychogeography in Alan Moore's from Hell
English History as Jack the Ripper Tells It: Psychogeography in Alan Moore’s From Hell Ann Tso (McMaster University, Canada) The Literary London Journal, Volume 15 Number 1 (Spring 2018) Abstract: Psychogeography is a visionary, speculative way of knowing. From Hell (2006), I argue, is a work of psychogeography, whereby Alan Moore re-imagines Jack the Ripper in tandem with nineteenth-century London. Moore here portrays the Ripper as a psychogeographer who thinks and speaks in a mystical fashion: as psychogeographer, Gull the Ripper envisions a divine and as such sacrosanct Englishness, but Moore, assuming the Ripper’s perspective, parodies and so subverts it. In the Ripper’s voice, Moore emphasises that psychogeography is personal rather than universal; Moore needs only to foreground the Ripper’s idiosyncrasies as an individual to disassemble the Grand Narrative of English heritage. Keywords: Alan Moore, From Hell, Jack the Ripper, Psychogeography, Englishness and Heritage ‘Hyper-visual’, ‘hyper-descriptive’—‘graphic’, in a word, the graphic novel is a medium to overwhelm the senses (see Di Liddo 2009: 17). Alan Moore’s From Hell confounds our sense of time, even, in that it conjures up a nineteenth-century London that has the cultural ambience of the eighteenth century. The author in question is wont to include ‘visual quotations’ (Di Liddo 2009: 450) of eighteenth- century cultural artifacts such as William Hogarth’s The Reward of Cruelty (see From Hell, Chapter Nine). His anti-hero, Jack the Ripper, is also one to flaunt his erudition in matters of the long eighteenth century, from its literati—William Blake, Alexander Pope, and Daniel Defoe—to its architectural ideal, which the works of Nicholas Hawksmoor supposedly exemplify. -
Press Releases Unique Crime Collection Giving Insight Into
Unique crime collection giving insight into Whitechapel murders to be made public for the first time The unique personal archive of the detective who led the hunt for Jack the Ripper - including a book in which he names the infamous Whitechapel murderer - will be made public for the first time after being given into the care of an independent museum. The private collection of Metropolitan Police Chief Inspector Donald Sutherland Swanson has been entrusted to the National Emergency Services Museum (NESM) in Sheffield by the former detective's family. The treasure trove lay undiscovered for decades until Swanson's descendants discovered an enormous collection of over 150 individual objects; paperwork, photographs, letters, drawings and personal belongings. Among them was what became known as 'the Swanson marginalia'; a book, annotated by Swanson, in which he names the person he believed to be the infamous killer, Jack the Ripper. The marginalia is thought to be a unique artefact revealing unknown details of the case as well as theories and notes on what evidence the Metropolitan Police had gathered - all from the pen of the inspector charged with solving the case. The marginalia, along with other items from the collection, will form part of a new exhibition, Daring Detectives & Dastardly Deeds, which will be revealed to visitors when the museum reopens on Wednesday 19 May. The exhibition, housed within NESM's original Victorian cells, explores the intriguing history of 19th crime and punishment from the bobby on the beat to the emerging science of forensics. The Swanson collection is thought to be one of the most detailed and significant of its kind.
