With a rich and extensive history resulting from the different civilizations that have settled on this very fertile territory (Phoenicians, Romans, Visigoths, and Arabs) located between the marshland and the river delta, only 80 kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean. Seville offers an incomparable tourist experience that impresses everyone who visits: Of particular note is its valuable and magnificent monumental heritage, its broad cultural offerings and its delicious gastronomy. The climate is another attraction of the city. Its average annual temperature is between 18º and 20º C, with many hours of sunshine throughout the year (around 3,000 hours). This lets Seville enjoy life in the streets and do activities outdoors almost year round. Moreover, Seville is the birthplace and capital of flamenco, declared an “Intangible Heritage of Humanity”. 2. QUALITY DESTINATION

Seville is a destination that cares about the quality of its tourism services.

Since 2006, Seville has been working with the SICTED project (Integral System for Spanish Tourism Quality in Destinations). SICTED is a project to improve the quality of tourist destinations promoted by the Secretary General of Tourism through the Spanish Tourism Institute (TURESPAÑA) and the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP), which works with tourism services/companies from up to 32 different offices to improve tourists’ experience and satisfaction. It is based on the application of a Best Practices Manual (among other tools), which varies according to the function of the office. It is a participatory model that requires tourism services or companies to commit themselves to the tourism quality of their destinations. It offers a 19-module training plan, grouped into 4 cycles: Technical assistance visits from SICTED advisers; question and answer workshops to find solutions with comprehensive debates; working groups to develop proposals to improve the destination and assessments that contrast the suitability of the company or services with the quality standards, and culminating, where appropriate, with the achievement of the distinctive Commitment to Tourism Quality. In Seville, a total of 114 companies have adhered to the system and 99 companies have been distinguished with the SICTED recognition. And SICTED continues working to spread this system to the rest of the city. 3. HOW TO GET THERE

In 2017, Seville will celebrate the 25th anniversary of one of the most important events ever held in the city: The 1992 Universal Exposition. Seville’s history can be split into two eras: before the Expo and after. For six months, Seville was the centre of the world. The area chosen for the celebration was the Isla de la Cartuja, where the former monastery of the Carthusian monks is located. 112 countries, 23 international organizations, 6 companies and the Spanish autonomous communities participated in this commemoration, visited by more than 20 million people. Thanks to the 1992 Expo, visitors could learn about the customs and cultures of different countries, as well as participate in a variety of cultural and business activities; there were also political and economic meetings that strengthened the bonds between different countries, but overall, between Seville and the rest of the world. An important element to consider when choosing your tourist destination is its shopping opportunities.

Seville is ideal for this, since it has a wide variety of commercial areas, not only in the city centre, but also in other districts around the city (Nervión, Los Remedios). Seville offers its visitors stores with the best national and international brands in fashion, footwear, accessories, jewellery, decoration, etc., both in large stores and smaller specialized boutiques. In addition, with Seville’s traditional craftsmanship, there are high-quality traditional products to be purchased. For example, pottery and ceramics, local traditional manufacturers with a variety of products and styles. For centuries, the Triana neighbourhood has been famous as the home to the majority of the factories and handicraft workshops. The creative sector related to flamenco costumes (fashion, accessories, footwear) is especially attractive and lively, offering a range of traditional dresses along with a growing number of high couture designs year-round. Saddles, thanks to Seville’s great fondness for horses; custom-made guitars by luthiers; fans, lace and embroidery on the shawls of manila... These are just some of the other popular artisan crafts to enjoy. Also noteworthy is the artisan activity surrounding the celebrations and iconographic representations during Holy Week (images, jewellery, embroidery, woodworking, embossing, gilding, upholstery, ceramics, among other sumptuous arts). Due to their mastery, Sevillian craftsmen receive orders from all over Spain and Latin America. 16. SEVILLE BY BICYCLE

The bicycle network in Seville is considered to be one of the best in Spain.

According to a study carried out by the Organization of Consumers and Users, Seville is one of the cities with the best bicycle infrastructures and the safest place to ride your bike. The network has over 160 kilometres of bidirectional bicycle paths, fully integrated into the city. Some of its advantages are that it connects the centre of the city with the majority of the various neighbourhoods and that it is easily identifiable by cyclists, pedestrians and vehicles. The number of cyclists using the network has risen from 12,000 to more 70,000 in only 4 years. In addition, Sevilla is a world-wide reference point among cities that promote mobility by bicycle, in a city committed to a sustainable model. It has been considered the 4th best in the world in terms of bicycle promotion and ranks 10th on copenhagenize.eu, the most prestigious ranking of European cycling cities. Seville is an ideal city for cycling, thanks to its good weather, and for being fairly flat. Using a bicycle is great both for visiting the city and for daily life. There are numerous private bicycle rental companies, as well as the public rental service, Sevici, which has 2,500 bicycles spread over 250 parking areas. www.sevici.es 17. LANGUAGE TOURISM

One of the biggest motivators to travel is to learn or perfect a language, in large part due to the need to master other languages, but also in combination with other fun tourist activities.

Andalucía is enjoying a wonderful period of language tourism, due to the boom in Spanish, a language with more than 560 million speakers. Seville is the second Andalusian destination chosen for this activity, and the city encompasses all that students look for when studying languages: hospitality, cultural and monumental heritage and climate, which makes it an ideal city to learn or perfect your Spanish. In Seville, Spanish students can learn the language and also enjoy the many attractions that the city has to offer, submersing themselves in its culture: Its rich cultural- historical heritage; its climate, which lets you enjoy many outdoor activities; its famous gastronomy; as well as its cultural offerings and nightlife. There are a wide variety of language schools available, offering intensive courses and weekly extra-curricular activities (cinema, exhibitions, conferences, visits to museums and monuments, cooking classes, etc.) for the Spanish student to truly be immersed in the culture of Seville and Andalucía. You can also take courses at the main universities of the city (University of Sevilla, Pablo de Olavide University, Loyola Andalucía University, International University of Andalucía). 18. CRUISE TOURISM

The Seville Tourism Board is decisively driving the cruise segment, working together with the Port Authority to boost the growth of the “Seville destination from Seville”, highlighting the added value and comfort for cruise passengers to enjoy the Seville destination from its own port. The goal is to maximize profitability for the infrastructure created under the Muelle de Las Delicias development plan: The commissioning of the exclusive “Puerta del Mar”, which, at 434 m in length and with a useful draft of 35 m, can accommodate boats of more than 40,000 TPM and 290 m in length. The incorporation of the Harbour with the “Muelle de la delicias” into the Port activity, with a cruise docking line of 615 metres in length and seven metres of draft. The newly inaugurated cruise terminal of the “Muelle de las Delicias”, with more than 1,000 square metres, with facilities to serve as a base port for cruises that begin or end in the capital. In addition, visitors will enjoy a new leisure and food service area as well as the new environmental infrastructures, such as the “Muelle de Nueva York”, which allows them to conveniently access the city centre. With its privileged climate and its landscape, Seville is an ideal city for a wide variety of sports.

The city has two football stadiums, an Olympic stadium, a specialized high-performance rowing and canoeing centre, a sports palace and the ability to practice nautical sports in the river. A number of sports events are held in the city. One of the most significant is the Marathon, one of the most important marathons in Spain, taking place during the month of February. A marathon where you can enjoy one of the fastest routes in Europe, with hardly any hills, which, together with the excellent weather this time of year in Seville, make this event the ideal race to try to lower your personal best. In addition, the design of a new circuit that runs past the most emblematic and characteristic places in the city, make the more than 42 kilometres of its length a pleasure to witness. www.zurichmaratonsevilla.es Another sport to enjoy in Seville is golf. The generous climate of our land and the quantity and quality of our courses makes it attractive for tourists who choose our city for their vacations, especially in winter, when the cold invades northern Europe. Other noteworthy events are the Spanish Championship in Long-Distance Rowing, The Spanish Canoeing Championship, the Seville Triathlon, the Guadalquivir night race, the Seville-Betis Regatta, etc. And for football fans, you’re able to visit the city’s two great stadiums: The stadium of Sevilla F.C. www. sevillafc.es and the Real Betis stadium. www.realbetisbalompie.es 2017 Sports Calendar: 2018 Advance Sports
