@020-@1 Washington State Women’s Basketball Game Notes @7 Washington State Women’s Basketball Game Notes Game ^: At Utah Utes Game RECAPs Game !- At Washington - W, 60-52 The Washington State women’s basketball team began the 2020-21 season on the winning side of the scoreboard, as the Cougars knocked off in-state rival Washington, 60-52, in Pac-12 Conference action Friday, Dec. 11. The win gives WSU its fi rst three-game winning streak over the Huskies in Seattle for the fi rst time in the NCAA era.

The game marked the fi rst time in program history that WSU has opened a season with a Pac-12 opponent. With the win, Washington State also improves to 1-0 on the year in Pac-12 play. It is the second time in the last three seasons that WSU has opened up Conference play with a victory. For Washington, they fall to 3-2 and 1-2 in Pac-12 play.

Washington jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead, but Washington State responded with a 29-4 run, that extended into the second quarter, and never looked back. The Cougar defense led the charge, as WSU forced eight UW turnovers during the extended run.The Cougars led by as many as 23 points on Friday en route to winning their third-straight road contest over UW in 45 years. The last time Washington State won three-consecutive road games over Washington came between Feb. 23, 1974-Feb. 20, 1975. Game @ - Idaho- W, 74-55 The Washington State women’s basketball team scored a program-record 32 points in the third quarter to collect a come-from-behind 74-55 victory over the in the Battle of the Palouse at Beasley Coliseum Sunday, Dec. 13.

The Cougars went into the halftime break trailing the Vandals, 27-23. That defi cit would soon be a distant memory, as WSU outscored Idaho in the third quarter, 32-14, to take a double-digit lead the Cougs would never relinquish. The 32 points scored in the third stanza marks a new program-high for points scored in the third quarter, topping the 29-point performance at Oregon on Dec. 30, 2016 in the third frame.

With the win, Washington State improves to 2-0 on the year, while Idaho falls to an even 2-2. WSU is off to its second-straight 2-0 start to open a season, as last year’s Cougar squad began the season 4-0.

The record-setting scoring performance in the third quarter was led by freshman Charlisse Leger-Walker, who scored 18 of her career-high 29 points in the frame. The 29-point effort is the fourth-most points scored in a game by a WSU freshman. The guard was just fi ve points shy of breaking the WSU freshman single-game scoring record of 33 points, set by Lia Galidera (at Minnesota, 11/11/12) and Chanelle Molina (vs. UCLA, 1/6/17).

Game # - Oregon State- W, 61-55 Washington State’s historic start to the 2020-21 season continued on Saturday, Dec. 19. The Cougars collected their fi rst win over a ranked-opponent in four seasons by knocking off No. 21 Oregon State, 61-55, in Beasley Coliseum.

The Cougs used a late 13-3 run over the fi nal four-plus minutes of the game against the Beavers to post their fi rst victory over a ranked-foe since the 2016-17 season. The game-clinching run was sparked by sophomore Johanna Teder, as the Tartu, Estonia native drilled four 3-point fi eld goals in the fi nal stanza to help WSU erase a late four- point defi cit.

The win keeps Washington State’s perfect record intact at 3-0, while they move to 2-0 in Pac-12 Conference action. For No. 21 Oregon State, they fall to an even 3-3 on the year and 1-3 in league play. The victory also marks the fi rst Cougar win over Oregon State since the 2012-13 season, when WSU picked up a 51-49 win in Corvallis to com- plete the season-sweep of the Beavers.

Teder scored 14 of her career-high 20 points in the fourth quarter. The sharpshooter went 6-of-10 from behind the arc to lead a trio of double-digit scorers for the Cougs. Freshman Charlisse Leger-Walker followed Teder in the scoring ledger with 13 points against the Beavers, while sophomore Bella Murekatete chipped in 10 points in the victory.

However, the Cougar’s potential game-tying shot missed its mark, as the Ducks narrowly escaped Beasley Coliseum with a 69-65 win over WSU.

Washington State, who was coming off its fi rst win against a ranked opponent in four seasons, nearly made it back-to-back wins over a ranked-foe. The Cougs led the defending Pac-12 champions for over 31 minutes in the contest, but found themselves trailing the Ducks, 67-65, with :21 remaining. WSU elected to go for the win out of a timeout, and got an open-look from behind-the-arc in the left corner with :06 on the clock. The potential game-winning shot drew back iron and Oregon was able to corral in the rebound with just a second remaining to seal the win.

Freshman Charlisse Leger Walker enjoyed her third 20-point performance over her last four contests with an even 20 points against the Ducks. The freshman hit a career-high four 3-point fi eld goals and added four assists to her stat line against the No. 8-ranked team in the nation.

Game % - Eastern Washington - W, &3-%2 The Washington State women’s basketball team used a balanced offensive attack against Eastern Washington Tuesday, Dec. 22, to pick up a 73-52 win over the Eagles in Beasley Coliseum.

WSU had a season-high nine players score against EWU in the win, and had four play- ers reach double fi gures. Junior Ula Motuga led the charge for the Cougs, as the Logan, Australia native scored a team-best 13 points. Freshman Charlisse Leger-Walker followed with a 12-point performance to extend her double-digit scoring streak to fi ve games. Ju- nior Cherilyn Molina and redshirt sophomore Michaela Jones has 11 points and 10 points, respectively, to help Washington State outscore Eastern Washington, 32-4, in points off the bench.

With the win, Washington State improves to 4-1 on the year, while the Cougs close out their current four-game homestand with a 3-1 mark. For the Eagles, they fall to 1-6 on the year after Tuesday’s contest.
