THE WATER SUPPLY SYNDICATE (SMAEL) CHOOSES SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT TO MANAGE THE PRODUCTION OF ITS DRINKING WATER FOR 5 YEARS AND FOR A TOTAL OF €23 MILLION

Every year, the LYS WATER SUPPLY SYNDICATE (SMAEL) produces 20 million m3 of drinking water that contributes to the water supplies for the conurbation, the Lens-Liévin conurbation and seven localities in the Pas de Calais department in northern France. The syndicate has chosen SUEZ environnement to produce its drinking water under the terms of a 5-year public service delegation contract that will take effect on 1 January 2016.

"We can feel proud of the confidence that the elected members of the SMAEL have placed in us, and we are looking forward to operating the plant in the future, introducing innovations and improving its performance, together with the SMAEL's engineers", declared Philippe Maillard, Managing Director of Eau France at SUEZ environnement.

Innovation and predictive models for improved water quality The drinking water production plant in Aire sur la Lys, France, has the capacity to produce 100,000 m3 per day. It will be equipped with two predictive tools that optimise the purification process on the basis of the available quantity and the quality of the water resources. By correlating the levels of the water table and the flow in the river, it will be possible to predict the periods of low water levels of the Lys River that feeds the plant. The PREDICTURB model will also monitor the turbidity of the water in order to anticipate any adaptations of the purification treatment to problems with the quantity or the quality of the water resources. These systems will help to guarantee the quality of the water production all year round by adapting to the conditions of the local water resources.

The SMAEL has also opted to install a POCIS system (Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Sampler) to detect the presence of pollutants in the waters pumped from the Lys River, in order to closely monitor the quality of the water produced on its territory.

By choosing this innovative solution, the SMAEL will be in a position to supply superior quality drinking water that meets even the highest expectations of its users. Moreover, the SMAEL will soon invite users to a virtual "enhanced reality" visit of the plant, in which they will discover the challenges of water treatment and of preserving water resources in the -Pas de Calais region of France. The visit will be available on the SMAEL's web site at the start of 2017.
