Early life DeMent was born in Paragold, Arkansas, the 14th and youngest child of Pat Dement (1910-1992) and wife Flora May (1918-2011). Iris's mother had dreams of going to Nashville and starting a singing career. Although she put these plans on hold to get married, her singing voice was an inspiration and influence for her youngest daughter Iris. DeMent grew up in a Pentecostal family. Her family moved from Arkansas to Los Angeles when she was three years old. While she was growing up, she was exposed to country and gospel music and influenced by it. Singing at the age of five as one of DeMent's little sisters, Iris had a bad experience when she forgot her words during her first performance, which forced her to avoid performing in public for some time. DeMent's music and career were inspired to write his first song Our City on a drive through the cul-de-e-talk to Midwestern city, at the age of 25. The lyrics came to her just like now, without the need for rewriting, and then she realized that songwriting was her calling in life. Our City was played during the final scene of the final episode (July 26, 1995) of CBS Northern Exposure. The song was recorded by Kate Rasby, Kate Brislin and Jodie Steher and Trampled by Turtles. Her first album, Infamous Angel, was released in 1992 on the Rounder-Philo label and explored topics such as religious scepticism, small-town life and human weakness. Let the Mystery Be was covered by a number of artists, including 10,000 maniacs and Alice Stewart, and was used in the first scenes of the film Little Buddha. In the fall of 2015, a version of Let the Mystery Be from the Transatlantic Sessions became the theme for the opening credits of HBO's The Leftovers, replacing the original The Main Title Theme written by Max Richter, and it will once again serve as the opening theme for the show's finale. In her second album, My Life, released in 1994, she continued her personal and introspective approach. The recording is dedicated to her father, who died two years earlier. My Life was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. DeMent's third album, The Way I was released in 1996. Thanks to the protest song Wasteland Free, this is the most political work of DeMent. It covers topics such as sexual violence, religion, public policy and Vietnam. DeMent sang the duo Bell Bottomed Tear as part of The Beautiful South's Much Later with Jools in 1997. In 1998, the song Iris by the rock band Goo Goo Dolls was named after her. Singer-songwriter John Resnick has already written the lyrics, but he has problems with its name. He opened LA Weekly and noticed that DeMent was playing in the city and thought her name was beautiful, and then decided to name it after her. Iris DeMent at the Old Settler's music festival - Driftwood, Texas, 2007 She sang four duets with John Prine on his 1999 album In Spite of Ourselves, including the title track. She appeared in the 2000 film Songcatcher, playing the character Rose Gentry and singing on the soundtrack as well. Her duet with Ralph Stanley on Ridin' That Midnight Train was the debut track on his 2001 album Clinch Mountain Sweethearts: Ralph Stanley and Friends. In 2004, she released Lifeline, an album of evangelical songs. It included 12 cover versions and one original track (He Reached Down). It was the first album she released on Flariella Records, which she founded herself and named after her mother. A shortened version of her performance of Leaning on the Everlasting Arms was later used in the final credits of the Coen brothers' film True Grit. On October 2, 2012, DeMent released its first original album in 16 years, Sing the Delta. DeMent sang duets with Steve Earle and Emmylou Harris and featured on the albums of many other artists. She sang merle Haggard's song Big Town on Tulare Dust: A Songwriters' Tribute to Merle Haggard. She often appears on Harrison's radio show Keillor's Prairie Home Companion. DeMent has introduced harmony vocals to Pallbearer, a song from country singer Josh Turner's 2012 album Punching Bag. In 2015, DeMent released The Trackless Woods, based on the words of Russian poet Anna Akhmatova, on Flariella's own label. She reunited with John Pryne in 2016 for his second duet album For Better, or Worse, and performed on two tracks. DeMent won the Americana Trailblazer Award at the Americana Music Honors 2017. DeMent was married to Elmer McCall in 1991, but the marriage ended in divorce. She married singer-songwriter Greg Brown on November 21, 2002. They live in rural southeastern Iowa with their adopted daughter. Discography Albums and Chart Positions of the Year Album Label Chart Peak 1992 Infamous Angel Philo 1993 My Life Warner Bros. • The Ballads of the Southern Mountains and the Escape from Old Europe
B AR B ARA C HING Happily Ever After in the Marketplace: The Ballads of the Southern Mountains and the Escape from Old Europe Between 1882 and 1898, Harvard English Professor Francis J. Child published The English and Scottish Popular Ballads, a five volume col- lection of ballad lyrics that he believed to pre-date the printing press. While ballad collections had been published before, the scope and pur- ported antiquity of Child’s project captured the public imagination; within a decade, folklorists and amateur folk song collectors excitedly reported finding versions of the ballads in the Appalachians. Many enthused about the ‘purity’ of their discoveries – due to the supposed isolation of the British immigrants from the corrupting influences of modernization. When Englishman Cecil Sharp visited the mountains in search of English ballads, he described the people he encountered as “just English peasant folk [who] do not seem to me to have taken on any distinctive American traits” (cited in Whisnant 116). Even during the mid-century folk revival, Kentuckian Jean Thomas, founder of the American Folk Song Festival, wrote in the liner notes to a 1960 Folk- ways album featuring highlights from the festival that at the close of the Elizabethan era, English, Scotch, and Scotch Irish wearied of the tyranny of their kings and spurred by undaunted courage and love of inde- pendence they braved the perils of uncharted seas to seek freedom in a new world. Some tarried in the colonies but the braver, bolder, more venturesome of spirit pressed deep into the Appalachians bringing with them – hope in their hearts, song on their lips – the song their Anglo-Saxon forbears had gathered from the wander- ing minstrels of Shakespeare’s time.

August 2012 Newsletter ------------------------------------ Yesterday & Today Records P.O.Box 54 Miranda NSW 2228 Phone: (02) 95311710 Email:[email protected] www.yesterdayandtoday.com.au ------------------------------------------------ Postage Australia post is essentially the world’s most expensive service. We aim to break even on postage and will use the best method to minimise costs. One good innovation is the introduction of the “POST PLUS” satchels, which replace the old red satchels and include a tracking number. Available in 3 sizes they are 500 grams ($7.50) 3kgs ($11.50) 5kgs ($14.50) P & P. The latter 2 are perfect for larger interstate packages as anything over 500 grams even is going to cost more than $11.50. We can take a cd out of a case to reduce costs. Basically 1 cd still $2. 2cds $3 and rest as they will fit. Again Australia Post have this ludicrous notion that if a package can fit through a certain slot on a card it goes as a letter whereas if it doesn’t it is classified as a “parcel” and can cost up to 5 times as much. One day I will send a letter to the Minister for Trade as their policies are distinctly prejudicial to commerce. Out here they make massive profits but offer a very poor number of services and charge top dollar for what they do provide. Still, the mail mostly always gets there. But until ssuch times as their local monopoly remains, things won’t be much different. ----------------------------------------------- For those long term customers and anyone receiving these newsletters for the first time we have several walk in sales per year, with the next being Saturday August 25th.

Jim Rooney DAA Presentation by Art Menius IBMA World of Bluegrass Awards Luncheon September 29, 2016 Jim Rooney did me a big favor, writing. In It for the Long Run: A Musical Memoir, so that I could do this presentation. That’s being a friend. Jim is a man who has done it all while enjoying being in it for the long run in many relationships. Think of Bill Keith, Eric von Schmidt, or his eventual spouse Carol Langstaff. At Owensboro I remember Jim, tall and commanding, as his left hand powered the rhythm on a kick ass rendition of Six White Horses.” Not that he limited himself to Monroe covers. His interpretation of the Stones’ “No Expectations” became a go to song. His love for bluegrass began back in Massachusetts in the 1950s when he heard on a band called the Confederate Mountaineers at radio station WCOP. Inspired by the Lillys, Tex, and Stovepipe, it wasn’t too long before Jim was on WCOP himself and hooked on performing. At Amherst he met Bill Keith who would be a friend and musical partner for much of the next 60 years. In 1962, they recorded “Devils Dream” and “Sailor’s Hornpipe,” the first documentation of Bill’s chromatic style shortly before he joined the Blue Grass Boys. The tracks appeared on their Living on the Mountain LP. Their many collaborations would include the revolutionary Blue Velvet Band whose music spread worldwide person to person Mud Acres, and concerts and tours with many different aggregations and combinations. Jim enjoyed sharing a heritage award from the Boston Bluegrass Union and brought us to tears at Bill’s induction into the Hall of Fame.
