Early life DeMent was born in Paragold, Arkansas, the 14th and youngest child of Pat Dement (1910-1992) and wife Flora May (1918-2011). Iris's mother had dreams of going to Nashville and starting a singing career. Although she put these plans on hold to get married, her singing voice was an inspiration and influence for her youngest daughter Iris. DeMent grew up in a Pentecostal family. Her family moved from Arkansas to Los Angeles when she was three years old. While she was growing up, she was exposed to country and gospel music and influenced by it. Singing at the age of five as one of DeMent's little sisters, Iris had a bad experience when she forgot her words during her first performance, which forced her to avoid performing in public for some time. DeMent's music and career were inspired to write his first song Our City on a drive through the cul-de-e-talk to Midwestern city, at the age of 25. The lyrics came to her just like now, without the need for rewriting, and then she realized that songwriting was her calling in life. Our City was played during the final scene of the final episode (July 26, 1995) of CBS Northern Exposure. The song was recorded by Kate Rasby, Kate Brislin and Jodie Steher and Trampled by Turtles. Her first album, Infamous Angel, was released in 1992 on the Rounder-Philo label and explored topics such as religious scepticism, small-town life and human weakness. Let the Mystery Be was covered by a number of artists, including 10,000 maniacs and Alice Stewart, and was used in the first scenes of the film Little Buddha. In the fall of 2015, a version of Let the Mystery Be from the Transatlantic Sessions became the theme for the opening credits of HBO's The Leftovers, replacing the original The Main Title Theme written by Max Richter, and it will once again serve as the opening theme for the show's finale. In her second album, My Life, released in 1994, she continued her personal and introspective approach. The recording is dedicated to her father, who died two years earlier. My Life was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. DeMent's third album, The Way I was released in 1996. Thanks to the protest song Wasteland Free, this is the most political work of DeMent. It covers topics such as sexual violence, religion, public policy and Vietnam. DeMent sang the duo Bell Bottomed Tear as part of The Beautiful South's Much Later with Jools in 1997. In 1998, the song Iris by the rock band Goo Goo Dolls was named after her. Singer-songwriter John Resnick has already written the lyrics, but he has problems with its name. He opened LA Weekly and noticed that DeMent was playing in the city and thought her name was beautiful, and then decided to name it after her. Iris DeMent at the Old Settler's music festival - Driftwood, Texas, 2007 She sang four duets with John Prine on his 1999 album In Spite of Ourselves, including the title track. She appeared in the 2000 film Songcatcher, playing the character Rose Gentry and singing on the soundtrack as well. Her duet with Ralph Stanley on Ridin' That Midnight Train was the debut track on his 2001 album Clinch Mountain Sweethearts: Ralph Stanley and Friends. In 2004, she released Lifeline, an album of evangelical songs. It included 12 cover versions and one original track (He Reached Down). It was the first album she released on Flariella Records, which she founded herself and named after her mother. A shortened version of her performance of Leaning on the Everlasting Arms was later used in the final credits of the Coen brothers' film True Grit. On October 2, 2012, DeMent released its first original album in 16 years, Sing the Delta. DeMent sang duets with Steve Earle and Emmylou Harris and featured on the albums of many other artists. She sang merle Haggard's song Big Town on Tulare Dust: A Songwriters' Tribute to Merle Haggard. She often appears on Harrison's radio show Keillor's Prairie Home Companion. DeMent has introduced harmony vocals to Pallbearer, a song from country singer Josh Turner's 2012 album Punching Bag. In 2015, DeMent released The Trackless Woods, based on the words of Russian poet Anna Akhmatova, on Flariella's own label. She reunited with John Pryne in 2016 for his second duet album For Better, or Worse, and performed on two tracks. DeMent won the Americana Trailblazer Award at the Americana Music Honors 2017. DeMent was married to Elmer McCall in 1991, but the marriage ended in divorce. She married singer-songwriter Greg Brown on November 21, 2002. They live in rural southeastern Iowa with their adopted daughter. Discography Albums and Chart Positions of the Year Album Label Chart Peak 1992 Infamous Angel Philo 1993 My Life Warner Bros.
