OLIVEIRA TAMIU arts center theater WWW.LAREDOTHEATERGUILD.ORG LTGI season 9 - 2018 • diseñada por pinktexasdesigns.com • fotografía por ferch January 2018 On behalf of the members of Laredo Theater Guild International (LTGI), it is my honor to welcome you to our second production of our 9th season, Yerma, by Federico García Lorca. We are presenting this play in its original Spanish as written by Garcia Lorca. We here at LTGI are such great fans of García Lorca that we felt performing this show in Spanish was the proper way to pay tribute to his powerful and poetic words. LTGI exists as a 501(c)(3) community-based theater organization in cooperation with Laredo Community College and Texas A&M International University. Our mission of providing quality theatrical entertainment could not be accomplished without the use of their wonderful venues not only for our productions, but for the all too important rehearsal spaces. Our organization is volunteer driven; our Board of Directors members receive no compensation for the significant time and effort they devote to our shows nor do we have any paid administrative staff. Your patronage tonight helps provide much needed revenue to help fund our shows. However, in our efforts to keep ticket prices accessible, we rely on ticket revenue only for a small fraction of our operating budgets. We depend on donations from various foundations and from the general public in order to provide the quality theater that LTGI has become known for. If you would like to contribute to our future success please refer to the Donors list at the end of this program to learn about the various ways you can donate to our organization. Thank you for your patronage, LTGI would not be who we are without the strong support from each and every one of you. Enjoy the show! What happens when a person’s purpose is taken away? Like an artist who is unable to create? Or a writer who is unable to write? Or to have one’s biological rights denied-- a woman who is unable to bear a child? This is the deceptively simple dilemma master Spanish poet, Federico García Lorca, situates upon his protagonist in his brilliant masterpiece, Yerma. The play chronicles six years in the deteriorating marriage between Yerma and Juan, as Yerma struggles to conform to the life she is given. In the 1930’s, Lorca’s writing provided a voice to women at a time when progressive thinking was not accepted. Although the play is set when it was written, I chose to comment on the status quo of masculine and feminine hierarchy by updating the setting to a present day rural community. Eighty years after Lorca wrote this epic tragedy, women continue to suffer injustices to men. When watching a period piece, many times audiences will feel removed from the action, as if watching the story through glass. In this version, my goal is that audiences recognize and relate, consequently becoming more invested in the story. For the conceptual design of the production, I wanted to represent biology and growth in the landscape. Yerma’s fate is tied into the barren soil that surrounds her. Lorca blends fantasy and realism throughout this poem, which is represented in the realistic earth set and the surrealistic “crops” that grow throughout to mark the passage of time. I also used this play as an opportunity to make the constantly judgmental villagers into a Greek style chorus. A huge thank you goes out to the entire cast, crew and production team for their patience and unwavering support. This beautiful play is brought to life by the diligent work of all those who surround me. I am in awe of your artistry and talent. Thank you for giving the gift of theatre. This is the sixth annual celebration of performing arts in Portland since it was founded in 2012 and continues to be run entirely by volunteers. Last year’s PortFringe generated $30,000 in ticket sales, all funneled directly back to the artists. For new subscribers and anyone who needs a quick reminder on what is Fringe, it started in Edinburgh, Scotland, when theater people decided to have an alternative festival playing concurrently with the Edinburgh International Festival. The next year a local newspaperman gave it a name: “Round the fringe of official Festival drama, there seems to be more private enterprise than before…” From there it has spread around the world, and now the USA hosts more Fringe Festivals than any other country. And Portland’s has been a successful one, growing and expanding each year. Founding PortFringe committee member Mariah Bergeron says, “The festival showcases an enormous number of local and national performances, hidden in rock clubs, tiny stages, and historic buildings. • Actors from the London Stage Fall Tour 2015
ACTORS FROM THE LONDON STAGE FALL TOUR 2015 by William Shakespeare Venue Name Performance Dates Performance Times Insert your school logo here [This space available for use by the host school.] THE AFTLS APPROACH For most of his working life, William Shakespeare was a sharer in the King’s Men, London’s leading theatre company. He knew the actors he was writing for and collaborated with them on seeing the plays into performance. All theatre is a collaboration, of course, and, while actors can no longer collaborate directly with Shakespeare, the Actors From The London Stage (AFTLS) company always aims to work with him, respectfully and creatively, throughout the rehearsal process. For forty years (since 2015 is the 40th anniversary of our founding), our company’s aim has always been to make his words exert their magic and their power in performance, but we do this in a vital, and perhaps unconventional, way. We have no massive sets to tower over the performers and no directorial concept to tower over the text of Shakespeare’s play. In fact, AFTLS does not have a director at all; instead, the play has been rehearsed by the actors, working together to create theatre, cooperating with each other in their imaginative engagement with the play’s words. And hundreds of thousands of playgoers over the forty years of AFTLS’s existence have hugely enjoyed doing exactly that, for the words are what Shakespeare used to create places and people, ideas and arguments, conflict and, sometimes, resolution, all the concerns that make up the very stuff of drama.

Billie Piper to Reprise her Olivier Award-Winning Role in Director Simon Stone’s Hit Adaptation of Federico García Lorca’s Yerma At Park Avenue Armory Stone and Piper Make North American Stage Debuts In Wrenching Production that Won Two Olivier Awards following its Premiere at the Young Vic in London March 23 – April 21, 2018 Billie Piper in Yerma at the Young Vic. Photo by Johan Persson New York, NY – December 19, 2017 – Kicking off the Park Avenue Armory’s 2018 Season, director and playwright Simon Stone brings his heart-wrenching, Olivier Award-wining reinterpretation of Federico García Lorca’s 1934 play Yerma to the Wade Thompson Drill Hall. The production stars actress Billie Piper who will reprise the role for which she won the 2017 Olivier Award and the Natasha Richardson Award for Best Actress at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards in 2016. The Armory production marks both Piper and Stone’s North American stage debuts. Continuing the Armory’s tradition of pushing the boundaries of theater through non-traditional stagings, Yerma unfolds within glass walls, sequestering the audience from the world of the play, heightening themes of entrapment, vulnerability, and scrutiny present in Stone’s adaptation. 1 Lorca’s Yerma, originally set in 20th-century provincial Spain, follows the eponymous character who is driven to madness in her desire yet inability to have a child. Emblematic of Stone’s adaptive style—updating canonical works to both emphasize the timelessness of these classic plays and expose the ironic anachronisms of modern life—Yerma is set in twenty-first century London and centers on the unnamed character “Her” as she struggles to conceive.
