Together with his wife, Honey Gross-Richardson, they have both contributed enormously and generously to the whole community of dog owners here in Perth. They have been breeders of German Shepherds for many years and played a huge role over the years in the German Shepherd Dog Association. As well as being very involved with the GSDA they have also played important roles on various Dogs West (formerly known as the Canine Association of Western Australia) committees. They have worked with local councils, establishing the Canine Good Companion programme here in Perth which has now been running for about 15 years in the Joondalup, Gosnells and Spearwood districts; have had judging licences for conformation, obedience, agility, tracking and the newly introduced sport of doggie dancing and Honey will continue on with these judging appointments. Together Rick and Honey developed curriculums and programmes for people wanting to learn how to instruct and take dog training classes. This started as a course for new trainee GSDA instructors and is now recognised and open to all new instructors with any of the Perth dog clubs. They have regularly travelled all over Australia giving lectures and assisting clubs with their training. They have also been regular contributors of articles to magazines and journals. Not only that, Rick had a wonderful talent for drawing and, together with his typically English sense of humour, has created a series of cartoons relating to all things ‘doggy’. These are depicted throughout this manual. I will be forever grateful to both he and Honey for allowing me to utilise these pictures in this manual, they fit into the topics so well and hopefully will help you see the ‘funny side of life’. Unfortunately Rick did not get to see his works published in this manual. Personally, I have known Rick and Honey since being involved in the Canine Good Companion programme from its inception. They have been wonderfully supportive and helped me overcome a problem I had with my Elliott when we were competing in obedience. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS When life takes you on a journey you never end up going it alone. There are always people to help and encourage you along the way. When I first started training with Elliott he was a handful and I had no idea about dogs and how to deal with the issues. If I knew then what I know now I would have done things so differently! But during the difficult times when I felt like I would never pass the competitions there were a few people in the background who kept me going and told me not to give up. So I would like to acknowledge these people for without them I would never have achieved the titles I aimed for; Jean and Dave Henderson, my Golden Retriever mentors, who gave me so much encouragement while competing in obedience and then helping Elliott and me on our retrieving journey. They willingly gave up their time to take me out training one on one. Andrew Wilkinson, Trevor Pritchard and Chris Findlay for allowing me to train with their specialist Alaskan Malamute and Staffordshire Bull Terrier breed training classes with my ‘blonde dog’! They gave me lots of encouragement and assistance for which I am very grateful. There are many other people who helped us in our training for obedience and retrieving and I would like to acknowledge and thank all of you however there are too many to name personally. iv INTRODUCTION Welcome and congratulations on your purchase of The Ultimate Puppy Owner’s Guide To Rearing, Training and Loving Your Pet for Life. British Veterinary Association / Kennel Club Hip Dysplasia Scheme Breed Specific Statistics – 1 January 2001 to 31 December 2016 Hip scores should be considered along with other criteria as part of a responsible breeding programme, and it is recommended that breeders choose breeding stock with hip scores around and ideally below the breed median score, depending on the level of HD in the breed. HD status of parents, siblings and progeny for Kennel Club registered dogs should also be considered, and these together with a three generation Health Test Pedigree may be downloaded via the Health Test Results Finder, available on the Kennel Club’s online health tool Mate Select (www.mateselect.org.uk). In addition, estimated breeding values (EBVs) are available for breeds in which a significant number of dogs have been graded, via the same link. For further advice on the interpretation and use of hip scores see www.bva.co.uk/chs The breed median score is the score of the ‘average’ dog in that breed (i.e. an equal number of dogs in that breed have better and worse scores). • Dog Breed Characteristics & Behavior
Behavior & Training 415.506.6280 Available B&T Services Dog Breed Characteristics & Behavior Why is it important to know about the characteristics and behavior of different breeds? All dogs are individuals and have their own personalities. At the same time, different breeds tend to also have certain characteristics that help define that particular breed. This information can be helpful to you when you are choosing a dog or trying to understand his behavior. The AKC (American Kennel Club) places dog breeds within seven different groups. In order to account for the different behaviors within a particular group, some groups can be further subdivided into families. Herding group: Breeds in this group were bred to herd sheep and cattle. They do this by stalking and staring, barking and/or nipping at their charges. They are bred to be intelligent, athletic and diligent and they are very trainable. Dogs from this group will do best with lots of exercise. They do even better if they have a job such as agility where they can use their natural athletic ability to navigate an agility course. Barking can be a problem if they are bored and they may attempt to “herd” their people-pack by nipping and chasing. Abstract In this thesis we create a method to allow dogs and humans to interact over the Internet. In particular, we generalize an established dog training technique known as "clicker-training" such that the remote and co-located interactions are reported by dog owners to be similar. In the process of creating this computer-mediated interaction, we learn what it means to design an interface for a creature with very different sensory modalities than humans. Dogs are not "furry humans" but entirely different creatures with very different perceptual, motor, and cognitive systems than humans. This work is significant because by systematically applying HCI design principles to non-humans, we include animals in the HCI community.
