Everyone's Game 4 It has been a very busy but active start for my first three months, with the WABL and SBL finals, our Annual Awards State Team Officials 5 Dinner and hosting the Australian U14 Club Championships. Hot Shots Program 6 has so many strengths compared to many other sports Association 7 Development offered to the community. In fact the word community is a very apt Southern Cross 8 description of what basketball provides to so many…a sense of Challenge community. Its ability to engage kids at the very earliest of ages to Annual Awards Dinner 12 seniors enjoying throwing a hoop for fun, basketball can provide it all for Aussie Hoops 14 men and women, able and disabled, metro and regional, indoor and Associations Cup 15 outdoor. Sport is more than physical activity, although the physical Country Development 16 component has some obvious benefits, sport itself brings the November Calendar 17 community together, provides a sense of purpose and belonging. Team sports also build character through leadership and team building, discipline and commitment, kids are versed in winning and losing and what better way to prepare them for the challenges of life, but when it is all said and done basketball provides that underlying foundation of fitness, health, personal development and fun. I look forward to the challenge of bringing basketball to the community and helping us reach Basketball WA and touch more lives to enjoy this wonderful sport for life.

Basketball WA recently held the Under 12's Hot Shots Program in the October school holidays. Over 150 kids attended and participated at various locations, players from Geraldton down to Busselton were represented in the makeup of those aforementioned participants. The Hot Shots program is the first step for athletes under the Basketball WA's development pathway.

The Hot Shots program put athletes in a fun on court learning environment where new skills were learnt and friends made. The camps always ended in games and shooting competitions which were always eagerly approached and fiercely contested. Athlete and parental feedback was very positive and receptive to the Hot Shots program.

Basketball WA has announced dates and program updates for the 2016 U12 Hot Shots and 2016 U13 & U14 Future Development Program (FDP). For more information please contact BWA Development Officer Dave Naylor on 6272 0752 or via email at [email protected]

Aussie Hoops

What a fantastic month it has been for Aussie Hoops in WA! WA has had over 600 enrolments into Aussie Hoops programs across the state which is a 400% improvement from term three. Basketball WA also welcomed four new associations to the Aussie Hoops team (Pannawonica Junior Sports, Cunderdin Basketball, Katanning Basketball and Wongan Hills Basketball).

There were two new programs starting in the metropolitan area for term four. One run by Frontier Basketball out at Armadale Arena and had a successful 21 participant enrolment. Also Cockburn Basketball Association start a term four program with an outstanding 42 participants enrolled. It is fantastic to see the growth of the Aussie Hoops junior programs across the state and with many more expressions of interest coming through, there is no doubt that the program will expanded further and

Cockburn Basketball’s First Aussie Hoops Session at the Wally Hagan Basketball Stadium.

If you would like to be involved in Aussie Hoops as either a coach, player or association please give Georgia Clarke a call or email on 6272 0748 or [email protected].

Sporting Schools

Over term three and term four, Basketball WA have been providing schools with the opportunity to run basketball clinics as an extension from the Aussie Hoops program. In collaboration with the Aussie Hoops centres and other Junior Associations we have been able to provide over 100 programs to schools across the state over term three and four. We would like to thank the coaches and associations for supporting the Sporting Schools program and hope that the exposure to the schools is beneficial for the expansion of their junior programs. 15.

Association Cup

Term four saw three Association Cups take place. The Lakeside Cup was jam pack and saw a very competitive Boys, Girls and Mixed divisions battle to take out the spot to qualify for the Champion Schools Cup. After the success of the first Aussie Hoops session and Sporting Schools interest inthe Cockburn region we had an additional Cup in Cockburn. Finally we had our last cup at Perth which was again very full and at this cup the semi final went into over time and the Boys grand final went into double over time! It was such an exciting day. After finalising the qualifications for the Champion Schools Cup we now have 12 boy’s teams, 12 girls’ teams and 5 mixed teams competing in the Champion Schools Cup on November 25 at Bendat Basketball Centre. The standard of play is expected to be very high and competitive and I would encourage spectators to come and watch. We will also be opening a NBL draft camp on the day where the kids can test their vertical leap, agility and other tests compared to the NBL players. All around it should be a fantastic day.

Country Development

For most Country Associations October marks the start of the 2015/2016 Country Season. As part of our ongoing Referee development within Country Associations, Basketball WA’s Officials Education and Development Officer Jess Byrnes conducted Association Beginner Referee courses throughout areas of regional WA.

The South West Referee Education tour took place over the second last weekend in October and covered Bunbury to Manjimup. A total of 53 referees were upskilled during this 800 kilometre round trip from Manjimup, Pemberton, Bridgetown, Collie, Eaton, Donnybrook and Dardanup.

The Great Southern Education tour took place the last weekend in October and covered Esperance to Albany and up to Katanning including a stop off in Ravensthorpe. A total of 107 referees were upskilled during this 2600 kilometre round trip by road and air from Condingup, Esperance, Ravensthorpe, Jerramungup, Denmark and Albany. A special mention also to the Wirrpanda Foundation who participated in our Albany course.

As a part of the teaching of the course in Esperance, Jess Byrnes worked with the local Referee Coordinators Ross Tamlin and Matt Thornton to further their referee education after the tour. Many thanks for their assistance in teaching this course.

Colin Davies from Albany Basketball Association (also an SBL Referee Evaluator) along with Morris Robertson Senior Vice President of Albany Basketball Association assisted in the delivery of the courses in Albany and Katanning. Many thanks to them both for their support during the trip.

Jess Byrnes flew to Kalgoorlie to deliver an Association Beginner Referee course as well as evaluations for Level 1 Referees who have completed their theory component of the course the weekend of the 14- 15 November. Basketball WA will be looking to build on these Country tours to ensure constant development opportunities for Country regions in 2016 and in the future. Jess Byrnes will look to include Level 1 Referee courses and Referee Coach courses on these Tours in 2016. She will also be working with Referee Coaches and Educators within the Country regions.

Australian Junior Championships

The final Australian Junior Championships tournament takes place in this month with the Australian Schools Championships from November 30-December 4. The selected referees for this tournament who will referee the Championship division are Hans Camu and Lenora Sundstrom who replaces the injured Adam Fox. We wish them both the best of luck for the tournament. The Zebra Tour also takes place at this time for the non-championship division teams of the School Championships. Basketball WA will be sending one referee Jacob Crook from Cockburn Basketball Association and one referee coach Colin Davies from Albany Basketball Association to this tournament. We wish both the best of luck for their first interstate tournament representing WA. 17.
