I dont even remember why I bought the first issue, but Im glad I did. The story of Jesse Custer, girlfriend Tulip and friend vampire, Cassidy, its the simple story of a mans search for God. Not the spiritual way, but actual God. And that all I can say. Get it. Read it. Its not for everyone, and it helps if one has a warped sense of humor, but its worth reading!     Twisted Trails of the Wold West By Matthew Baugh © 2006 The Old West was an interesting place, and even more so in the Wold- Newton Universe. Until fairly recently only a few of the heroes and villains who inhabited the early western United States had been confirmed through crossover stories as existing in the WNU. Several comic book miniseries have done a lot to change this, and though there are some problems fitting each into the tapestry of the WNU, it has been worth the effort. Marvel Comics’ miniseries, Rawhide Kid: Slap Leather was a humorous storyline, parodying the Kid’s established image and lampooning westerns in general. It is best known for ‘outing’ the Kid as a homosexual. While that assertion remains an open issue with fans, it isn’t what causes the problems with incorporating the story into the WNU. What is of more concern are the blatant anachronisms and impossibilities the story offers. We can accept it, but only with the caveat that some of the details have been distorted for comic effect. When the Rawhide Kid is established as a character in the Wold-Newton Universe he provides links to a number of other western characters, both from the Marvel Universe and from classic western novels and movies. It draws in the Marvel Comics series’ Blaze of Glory, Apache Skies, and Sunset Riders as wall as DC Comics’ The Kents. As with most Marvel and DC characters there is the problem with bringing in the mammoth superhero continuities of the Marvel and DC universes, though this is not insurmountable.

However, historians are not yet in agreement as to when the medium became mature. This thesis proposes that the medium’s maturity was cemented between 1985 and 2000, a much later point in time than existing texts postulate. The project involves the analysis of how an American mass medium, in this case the comic book, matured in the last two decades of the twentieth century. The goal is to show the interconnected relationships and factors that facilitated the maturation of the American sequential art, specifically a focus on a group of British writers working at DC Comics and Vertigo, an alternative imprint under the financial control of DC.

INTRODUCTION Two forms of fiction using Christian apocalyptic imagery have recently entered mainstream popular culture. The first form I will refer to as premillennialist apocalyptic fiction. This form is usually in the style of the contemporary political thriller or techno-thriller. Its essence is that follows the outlines of the modern premillennialist “rooster” 1 script. The second form, which I will refer to as anti-apocalyptic fiction, has emerged from various precedents in the science fiction and fantasy genres and uses Christian apocalyptic imagery to question the fundamentals of the premillennialist vision. The emergence of these forms is indicative of changes within society and publishing affecting the receptiveness to millennial themes in fiction and changes in millennial concerns as we approached the years 2000-2001. The contrasts among these forms and the interpretive works that spawned them illustrate the broader structural distinctions among the varieties of theological and fictional (specifically science fiction/fantasy and political or techno-thriller) modes of discourse. Both forms have the potential either to mitigate millennial tension or, in their more extreme forms and in confrontation with each other, to heighten such tension. Apocalyptic fiction using Christian imagery almost by definition follows certain Christian assumptions, regardless of whether the target audience is premillennialist or even Christian. The desirability of assisting Good in the ultimate destruction of Evil and the relinquishing of human destiny to the Good are typically not questioned.

Splatterpunk Western; religious satire; treatise on gender politics; philosophical meditation on the nature of good versus evil; shit­kicking romp through the heartlands of America ­ Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s Preacher covered more ideological ground in its sixty­six issues than any other comic of its time. Running from 1995 to 2000, the story of Jesse Custer ­ reluctant man of god and even more reluctant carrier of the demon/angel hybrid Genesis ­ marked a step up for D.C.’s adult comic imprint Vertigo in terms of sex, violence and blasphemy and would become the standard by which future titles were judged. (1) Ostensibly a hero’s journey beginning and ending in the great state of Texas, Ennis & Dillon’s tale is an exhilarating saga of petty angels, failed suicides, redneck intolerance, international conspiracies, an insecure God and occasional meetings with The Duke. But while the iconography is pure Americana, the ideological engine of the story is a debate on the nature of faith, with a lilting accent hailing all the way from Belfast. The secret of Preacher’s success, it will be argued, is its outsiders’ perspective; a perspective which allows a free and easy splicing of the traditional Western with old school Gothic; all bound together with a double helix of the arcane. While its title hearkens back to simpler times on the frontier and its historical interludes originate from the Old West, the Vietnam War and the Irish Diaspora; the mechanics of Ennis & Dillon’s diegesis is distinctly Irish in its construction of premise and character.

It is possible to go a long way further back and find stories told with pictures, though. The western genre has been, as with the comic book, around for a while in several mediums, from the novels of Zane Grey to films. It’s in films that the western gained its current reputation. It is, I think; fair to say that the western genre is best known through films, as the first narrative film was a western ( The Great Train Robbery (1903)). In comic books, the western genre is not really prevalent. The best known western character in comic book history is Jonah Hex, a character that has been around for decades and, as of 2009, still has a series going strong. Recent output of westerns in comic books isn’t really long. Brian Azzarello’s short lived series Loveless is an example along with the recent Jonah Hex series. Those are both westerns taking place in the mythical time of the west, the 19 th century. In 1995 Preacher started coming out, a contemporary western. This essay will deal with Preacher as western. How it is a western? What are the signs? I will make a case for Preacher being a western first and foremost.

    Popular Narrative Media It’s all relative: breaking barriers and binaries in Preacher For Review Only Journal: Popular Narrative Media Manuscript ID: Draft Manuscript Type: Original Article Keywords: comics, binaries, genre For special issue ‘Popular Narrative: Beyond the Novel,’ Issue 4, Spring 2010. This article demonstrates how the comic book Preacher (Garth Ennis/Steve Dillon) breaks genre barriers and narrative binaries to produce a multi-generic work of serial fiction where norms are unfixed and nothing is absolute. It begins by considering Preacher’s use of various genre models (taken from both literary and cinematic sources and including the quest, the road movie, the western, and the romance) and exploring the ways in which this series represents and subverts these in both thematic and aesthetic terms. It proceeds to identify further subversions and discusses Preacher’s Abstract: use of textual oxymorons and visual paradoxes to invert binary categories such as male/female and human/monster. It extends this argument to the macrocosm of the series, making reference to the flexible narrative position of characters and the comic’s thematic background. The article concludes by summarising the ways in which Preacher unfixes expected narrative binaries by denying a Manichaean notion of morality and instead demonstrating this is a subjective concept. It argues that the tension between the visual/textual and the interpretative power allowed to the reader are essential elements in achieving this and concludes that Preacher’s subversions of formulaic narrative patterns and reader expectations are reliant upon the comics medium.
