AN ANALYSIS OF PROFESSIONAL LACROSSE LEAGUE INSTAGRAM ACCOUNTS AND HOW THEIR MANAGERS USE VARIOUS FORMS OF CONTENT TO ENGAGE AUDIENCES A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE MASTER OF ARTS BY GUNNAR OLSON DR. ADAM KUBAN – ADVISOR BALL STATE UNIVERSITY MUNCIE, INDIANA DECEMBER 2018 Contents 3 ------------------- Introduction 6 ------------------- Literature review 13 ------------------ Method 19 ------------------ Results 31 ------------------ Discussion 34 ------------------ Future research and limitations 37 ------------------ Works cited 40 ------------------ Appendix 2 Introduction For the major professional sports leagues in North America, social media is a helpful, supplemental tool to reach audiences. Fans of the leagues can tune in to games on television and can see coverage in print and online, making social media a secondary way of consuming the sport. When newer professional sports leagues with smaller audiences — like Major League Lacrosse (MLL) and the National Lacrosse League (NLL) — use social media, however, the league accounts can sometimes be the only way fans can interact with the league and follow along year-round, as the product is in limited markets for in-person viewing and has a minimal presence on television and in the news media. For the purposes of this study, Major League Lacrosse will be written as its commonly known acronym, MLL. The National Lacrosse League will be written as NLL. The origins of lacrosse in North America pre-date the founding of both the United States and Canada (Childs, 2015). The First Nations people created the game in its first form, played on vast, sometimes miles-long fields as a way to entertain and even solve tribal disputes.

  • Team USA Lacrosse Abounds with Baltimore Catholic Connections
Team USA lacrosse abounds with Baltimore Catholic connections After he graduated from Archbishop Curley High School in 2003, Kyle Hartzell became an integral part of championship lacrosse teams at the junior college, NCAA Division III and professional levels. In 2012, while Joe Fletcher was helping Loyola University Maryland to an NCAA Division I title, Ryan Brown led Calvert Hall to a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference crown. Their championship pedigrees are among the reasons those players are on the roster of Team USA, which is in Israel for the Federation of International Lacrosse Men’s World Championship tournament, which runs July 12-21. Hartzell was on the 2014 team that lost the gold-medal game to Canada, and is most eager to make amends. “I will never forget how that felt after we lost to Canada,” Hartzell told the Review. “This being my second time playing internationally will definitely help in the experience department.” A 32-year-old defenseman, Hartzell led CCBC-Essex to a NJCAA title in 2004, and Salisbury University to the NCAA Division III championship and unbeaten season in 2007. At the professional level, he’s a four-time Major League Lacrosse all-star. Hartzell led the Chesapeake Bayhawks to the MLL title in 2010, when he was MVP of the championship game, and moved on to the New York Lizards, helping them to a championship in 2015. On the indoor circuit, he helped Washington to a National Lacrosse League title in 2010. Along with Tucker Durkin, another member of Team USA, Hartzell, who was raised in Dundalk and resides in Dallas, founded Defensive Lacrosse Academy.
