Discover Rockwood Letter from the Executive Dear Residents, Welcome to the 2013 Summer HAPPENINGS Guide. Summer is a wonderful time to enjoy the great outdoors with friends and family. I am proud that New Castle County offers so many fun and affordable ways to make the most of the sunny days and warm nights. I look forward to visiting with you around the camp fire at one of the upcoming Sleep Under the Stars events! Go to nccde.org/specialevents for details about dates, locations, and registration. Beautiful Carousel Park and Equestrian Center comes alive again with activities ranging from Nature Explorers and Fitness is Fun camps for ages 7-12 to Power Boot Camp for teens and adults. More fun in the outdoors is on the way with the 64th Annual Platinum Picnic for those ages 50+. The theme of this year’s picnic is Stars and Stripes. Honoring those who have served in the military will be a highlight for me on June 5 at Banning Park. The arts contribute so much to the quality of life here in the County. I join the members of New Castle County Council in celebrating the County’s cultural offerings. Be sure to get your tickets for the Shakespeare Festival production at Rockwood Museum and Park in July. Help nurture the artist in yourself and your children by attending classes at the Art Studio or guitar and dance lessons at the Community Activity and Recreation Center near you. Take the time to discover all the programs at the County Libraries, including free concerts, crafts workshops, and movie nights. There is so much to do in New Castle County in the coming months. I wish you a safe and fun-filled summer! Thomas P. Gordon, County Executive HAPPENINGS can also be found online at nccde.org/happenings. COUNTY COUNCIL: TAKE IN THE CULTURAL ARTS New Castle County Council is committed to identifying, supporting, promoting and celebrating the cultural arts in our community. The visual arts, literature, music, theater, film, and dance stimulate social awareness and honors diverse cultural values. Throughout New Castle County there are theaters, art museums, and music festivals for the whole family to enjoy. Places including the Candlelight Dinner Theater, the Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts, the Delaware Children’s Theater, the Delaware Theater Company, and the N Theater will both entertain and educate you. Wilmington’s Grand Opera House is a center for artistic activity. The Grand presents shows each season, ranging from symphony orchestras and ballets to the latest rock and comedy stars, with jazz, folk, and family artists as well. The Delaware Symphony, Opera Delaware, and First State Ballet Theatre are all in residence at The Grand. The DuPont Theatre, formerly The Playhouse Theatre, presents national touring productions of Broadway shows and is the oldest continuously operating legitimate theatre in the country. Since 1913, the brightest stars of stage and screen have performed for the citizens of New Castle County. The newly renovated Everett Theater in Middletown is bringing back cultural arts to “below the canal”. The Everett hosts special art programs, concerts, recitals, movies, and stage productions and is home to the annual Children’s Summer Theater Workshop. For visual arts, the Delaware Art Museum is best known for its large collection of British Pre-Raphaelite art, works by Wilmington-native Howard Pyle and fellow American illustrators, and urban landscapes by John Sloan and his circle. Bring the family out during the summer to listen to the rhythm of the saxophone and the beat of the drums at events such as the DuPont Clifford Brown Jazz Festival and the Riverfront Blues Festival. New Castle County Council invites all residents to go out and join us in taking in the cultural arts that make our community a place that we are proud to call home. THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION ARTS & SCIENCES “I THOUGHT ABOUT KILLING YOU”: CONSIDERING THE UTILITY OF RHETORICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL CRITICAL APPROACHES TO KANYE WEST’S YE CORY N. STEINLE SPRING 2020 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for baccalaureate degrees in Communication Arts and Sciences and Labor and Employment Relations with honors in Communication Arts and Sciences Reviewed and approved* by the following: Bradford Vivian Professor of Communication Arts & Sciences Thesis Supervisor Lori Bedell Associate Teaching Professor in Communication Arts & Sciences Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. i ABSTRACT This paper examines the merits of intrinsic and extrinsic critical approaches to hip-hop artifacts. To do so, I provide both a neo-Aristotelian and biographical criticism of three songs from ye (2018) by Kanye West. Chapters 1 & 2 consider Roland Barthes’ The Death of the Author and other landmark papers in rhetorical and literary theory to develop an intrinsic and extrinsic approach to criticizing ye (2018), evident in Tables 1 & 2. Chapter 3 provides the biographical antecedents of West’s life prior to the release of ye (2018). Chapters 4, 5, & 6 supply intrinsic (neo-Aristotelian) and extrinsic (biographical) critiques of the selected artifacts. Each of these chapters aims to address the concerns of one of three guiding questions: which critical approaches prove most useful to the hip-hop consumer listening to this song? How can and should the listener construct meaning? Are there any improper ways to critique and interpret this song? Chapter 7 discusses the variance in each mode of critical analysis from Chapters 4, 5, & 6.

With the objective of exploring the role that Fairouz plays in the lives of the Arab diaspora, this project examines possible identity constructions and concepts of belonging, investigating how Fairouz factors in diasporic space and how her music offers opportunities to navigate individual and social positions in such space. Through an ethnographic study, focusing on in-depth interviews, narratives of 59 members of the Arab diaspora living in Doha, Qatar and London, England were heard, understood and categorised thematically, highlighting how music can elucidate and situate experiences of migration, positioning listeners on a fluctuating continuum, which moves beyond standard private and public lines of domesticity, nationalism and religion.
