The aim is to explore how the screenwriter, through the screenplay text, communicates the potential film to the reader. The thesis thus situates the screenplay in a communicational context, and argues that the screenplay text is a means of communication. In many cases, the screenplay text is the writer’s only means of communicating with a potential investor, thus determining whether the screenplay will fulfil its purpose of becoming a film.

Narration in the Screenplay Text by Ann Igelström A Thesis Submitted to the College of Arts and Humanities In Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of English 2014 Abstract This thesis examines the narration in screenplay texts. Using a communicational approach enables a close examination of the different extratextual and intratextual narrating voices that communicate the story and the look of the potential film. The thesis relates the screenplay text to narrational theories from literary and film theory, and proposes its own narrative communication model suited to the screenplay. The model places the various narrating voices on different narrative levels that show the voices’ relation to the text, the fiction, and the scene. The communication model also identifies the voices’ addressees. Through close readings of screenplay texts, the thesis examines how different narrating voices function and how they can be characterised. The discussions focus on how these voices use different techniques to narrate the story and indicate the look of the potential film. The discussions particularly highlight how the voices influence the readers’ visualisation of the potential film, since this is a distinguishing feature of the screenplay text-type.

INTRODUCTION Jane Austen is everywhere. Her books, and the media and merchandise that they have inspired, can be found everywhere from the silver screen to the college classroom. The followers who cherish her works are among the most dedicated of all fan communities; in them, Jane Austen has produced a passionate global fandom that still thrives today even while the books are 200 years old. Her books do not only appear as standard stock in every bookstore, but across the world, countless products such as Austen mugs, blankets, pens, paperweights, and tote bags can be found. Online craft websites such as Etsy and Society6 boast thousands of Jane Austen-related products among their typical plethora of hand-crafted jewelry and nerdy phone cases. These Austen products are everywhere; in fact, I’m writing this while sipping hot chocolate from a Sense and Sensibility mug which I bought at The Jane Austen Centre in Bath, England. The Jane Austen Centre in Bath represents a prominent venue into which the Jane Austen fandom, often referred to and self-identifying with the moniker “Janeites,” have expanded. Locations such as the Centre celebrate the places in which Austen lived, worked, or visited, leading fervent fans to go on pilgrimages to those sites. If that is not enough, or if fans live too far from England, there are countless avenues they can pursue to find more Austen: an abundance of fan websites, such as “The Republic of Pemberley”; yearly conferences and symposia, including the Jane Austen Summer Program in Chapel Hill, NC; large or small Janeite organizations, including the Jane Austen Society of North America (JASNA); numerous college courses dedicated to her 1 works; literary journals whose articles examine even the smallest details of her works; roleplaying iPhone application games; fanfiction; and so much more.

  • Working Title Films and Transatlantic British Cinema Nathaniel
Working Title Films and Transatlantic British Cinema Nathaniel Townsend PhD University of York Theatre, Film and Television September 2014 2 Abstract This thesis presents a business history of the London-based film production company, Working Title Films. The focus is on the creative and business structures and processes through which Working Title has operated and, in turn, the individual and collective agency of the key players responsible for developing and maintaining these institutional determinants. The same set of research questions are applied to the principal filmmaking institutions with which Working Title has collaborated, and, more particularly, examines how Working Title has negotiated creative and business relationships with various larger film businesses. By taking a chronological approach to Working Title’s evolution, a detailed account of the company’s years as an independent production company (1984-1990), a subsidiary of PolyGram Filmed Entertainment (1990-1998) and a subsidiary of Universal Pictures (1998-present) is provided. The thesis also offers a historical and conceptual framework through which the business history of Working Title is analysed. In the first instance, this involves a reconsideration of the relationship between the film industries and cultures of Britain and Hollywood which combines the discourses of national cinema with more recent scholarship about transnational cinema. This conceptual reinterpretation is subsequently applied to three indicative business histories from the 1930s and 1940s: London Films, MGM-British and the Rank Organisation — and then to Working Title itself. The central concept of the thesis — ‘Transatlantic British Cinema’ — describes a type of cultural production that challenges orthodox accounts of British cinema as national cinema and indicates the ways in which representations of Britain and ‘Britishness’ function within transnational film culture.
