Coimbatore to set up a Centre of Excellence for Biotechnology 12 July 2017 | News Renovation of agricultural extension centres, creating infrastructure facilities, including seed hubs at agricultural and horticultural colleges and filling up of Assistant Agricultural Officers vacancies were the other announcements made. Chief Minister Edapaddi K Palaniswami made several key announcements in the State Assembly that included establishing a Centre of excellence for biotechnology at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University at Coimbatore, cultivation of grafted varieties of horticultural crops in 11,250 acres, setting up a separate battalion called ‘Tamil Nadu Disaster Rescue Force’ in police and providing solar powered pump sets to 1,000 farmers. According to the news reported by The Indian Express, the Chief minister announced that a Centre of Excellence for Biotechnology would be established at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University at a cost of Rs 430 crore. Preliminary works for it would be undertaken at a cost of Rs 51 crore. Renovation of 160 agricultural extension centres at an expenditure of Rs 48 crore, creating infrastructure facilities, including seed hubs at agricultural colleges at Coimbatore and Killikulam in Thoothukudi district, Periyakulam horticultural college, Forest College and Research Institute at Mettupalayam, National Pulses Research Centre at Vamban, Cuddalore Sugarcane research station, horticultural research station at Udhagamandalam at a cost of Rs 108 crore and filling up of 430 Assistant Agricultural Officers vacancies were the other announcements. To reach the areas affected by disaster quickly and to help the people, a new battalion, Tamil Nadu Disaster Response Force (TNDRF), would be created in the State police force. Nearly Rs 5 crore would be granted for buying rescue equipment. Besides, Rs 52.40 crore would be allocated for buying modern communication gadgets and rescue and searching equipment for Chennai Corporation, fire and rescue services department, Metrowater, Coast Guard, forest department, PWD, Home Guards, highways department and district collectors..

Chilli crop cultivation proves to be remunerative in a rainfed region like Thoothukudi district of South Tamil Nadu where the major rainfall contribution is from North-East monsoon. The influence of seasonal rainfall variability on chilli was explored through correlating the inter-seasonal rainfall deviation with chilli productivity using the 30 years (1983-2012) rainfall and chilli productivity data. Results indicated that chilli productivity had the relationship with seasonal rainfall by 45 percent. The study further revealed that chilli crop yield dropped in five out of 10 dry rainfall years and excess rainfall years also reduced the yield of chilli crop.

Initial Project Summary Project Location: Thoothukudi, Tamilnadu, India Name of Applicant: Mytrah Energy (India) Private Limited Name of Project: Mytrah Wind Project Description: The Project involves the construction and operations of a 252 MW wind farm located in the Tamilnadu Region, Thoothukudi District of Southern India. The Project consists of 105, GE-2.4-116 MW wind turbine generators, 33/230 kV capacity pooling substation, and an 8 km, 230 kV high voltage power line to the Tirunelveli 230/400 kV grid substation located at Vadakuvandanam village. Environmental and Social Categorization and Rationale: The Project has been reviewed against OPIC’s categorical prohibitions and determined to be categorically eligible. The Project is screened as Category A because the Project represents a large-scale greenfield wind project which may result in significant adverse environmental and social impacts that are diverse and irreversible. The major environmental and social concerns related to the Project include the potential for impacts on resident and migrating birds and bats; worker health and safety; and impacts related to land acquisition, noise, and shadow flicker. The Project is located in an area with other wind farms and cumulative impacts may be significant.
