PRESENT: The Dean, Richard Pengelley, and 45 members of the Cathedral congregation, as recorded in the attendance register, incorporated in the Minute Book. The Cathedral Administrator acted as Minute Secretary. APOLOGIES: Barbara Good, Stuart Good, Elisabeth Campbell, Deb Goldsworthy, Joseph Nolan, Julian Misso. MINUTES OF THE PREVIOUS MEETING: The Minutes of the Annual General Meeting of 29 May 2016 were accepted as a true record. Moved: Ian MacLeod, Seconded: Elaine Atkinson PRESENTATION OF REPORTS: The reports were received and taken as one. Moved: Philip Goldsworthy, Seconded: Patricia Gates The Dean highlighted: The Reverend Gareth Hughes’ arrival in November 2016. The Dean highlighted Gareth’s gifts with language and liturgy and the subtle changes he has made to the Service sheets to make them much more user friends. In Reverend Rae’s fifth year, the Dean highlights that Rae conducts a baptism nearly every week, and that was pretty exciting to welcome new Christians into our community. The weddings continue to be a bit of a struggle across the board and he and Chapter would look at charges. Josclyn Sloan and the bellringers do a great job with a few hiccups this year due to buildings works. Special thanks to Laura Ivey for her work as Treasurer for the past 15 years. The new St George’s Dance & Theatre programme has a lot of exciting ideas, some challenges and great energy from Jay Emmanuel. The programmes introduce a new demographic into Cathedral life and the Dean encouraged all to support Jay. The Dean’s Verger’s report is always eagerly anticipated with its element of humour. The Dean thanked Stephen for his 25 years of dedication and commitment to the Cathedral and those in attendance applauded his service. The flower team have had challenges over the year which Maureen Ray makes clear. Unfortunately, there is not much we can do about these issues. The flower team did a wonderful job with over 7000 crochet poppies planted in Cathedral Square for Remembrance Day. The Arts Foundation is a very hard working committee that supports the music, particularly the Concert Series, Art Exhibition and Dance & Theatre. The Arts Foundation is a tax deductable organisation. Appreciation was shown to the Wright Burt Foundation for underwriting the Concert Series. The Dean reminded those present that the Friends were not a fundraising group, they were a group of friends who get together. The Dean thanked Dr Chris Haynes, who stepped down as Secretary. Dr Haynes thanked the Dean for his support and highlighted the workload challenges the Secretary faces, to that end, the job has now been split into three parts. Dr Haynes also thanked the Committee for their personal support to him during the challenging times. 5 Joseph sends his apologies, with mine and the Chapter’s permission, he is in Melbourne for the Widor Project on the Melbourne Town Hall Grand Organ from today until 18 June. The standard of music is extremely high and the organs are an ongoing challenge. All four concerts in the Concert Series are being recorded by the ABC with is testament to their quality at a time when the ABC are going through funding challenges. The Readers report is taken as read (no pun intended). The Ministry of the Word is an important part of the Service. Thanks to those who step in at the last minute. Thanks to Liz Campbell and her team for their work in the shop, and for also acting as welcomers. Thanks to Bishop David Murray and David Noble for their organisation in bringing wonderful presenters to the Cathedral who offer their reflections on their work, life and faith. Thanks to all those who Steward, especially for getting the plate around to all at large Services, and for Stephen Day and Gareth Hughes for their ongoing supervision. Dr Leadbetter highlighted the good return for the year, however, although we have increased our collection, we are looking back at where we were five years ago. We can now replenish the reserves and can look at rejuvenating some of the programmes that have lapsed. The Dean highlighted that one thing that is remarkable is that last year he received two generous donations of $25,000 to ‘get us over the line’, this year we did not need to ask these generous benefactors. Mr David Lester thanked the Chapter for their good stewardship. Dr Leadbetter highlighted that not only does Joseph Nolan provide us with divine and heavenly music, he is prudent in his planning and at the moment we cannot have a full choir each week due to budgetary constraints. GENERAL REVIEW BY THE DEAN: The Dean gave an oral overview of his report.
