“We Can't Even Play Ourselves”: Mixed-Race Actresses in the Early
“WE CAN’T EVEN PLAY OURSELVES”: MIXED-RACE ACTRESSES IN THE EARLY TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE DIVISION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI'I AT MĀNOA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN AMERICAN STUDIES AUGUST 2017 By Valerie M. Lo Dissertation Committee: Robert Perkinson, Chairperson Mari Yoshihara Jonna Eagle Konrad Ng Jonathan Okamura Keywords: Mixed race, Ambiguity, Post-Racial, Color-blind, Film ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This project has been a test of my resiliency and grew from my desire to add a small contribution to the ongoing discussion of mixed race representations in film and television. Many people have come into my life in the last several years and encouraged my studies, talked excitedly with me, and subtly (or blatantly) pushed me to continue when I thought the road ahead looked too ominous. In 2005, at San Francisco State University’s Asian American Studies banquet, my Master’s thesis chair, Wei Ming Dariotis, remarked that a PhD was in the stars for me. Those words stayed close to me during my graduate work at the University of Hawai'i. My first teaching assistantship with Isabelle Peluad at San Francisco State University in Asian American Literature showed me exactly what I wanted to immerse myself in for the rest of my life. Graduate courses with Russell Jeung and Madeline Hsu reaffirmed my desire to work within the field of Asian American Studies and continue on to a doctorate program. My coursework in American Studies was rigorous and pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way. -

This cross-curricular program has integrated garden-based learning all across the school while giving our students the freshest cafeteria food possible. “All of the research shows that students who have positive experiences trying new foods at this age generally experience better nutrition throughout their lives,” said Pam Beesly, nutrition services director. “This garden program is a success because it integrates hands-on science instruction, nutrition, and fun to get students excited about the foods they choose to eat.” Taking students out of the classroom has also led to the program’s success. “Last year was the first full year of the program, and we saw an increase of about 10% in third-grade science pass rates at Piney Woods,” explained Holly Flax, the division’s director of science instruction. “We’ve made this a key piece of the curriculum, and it seems to really be paying off.” The program has also been a benefit to operations. “Our Nutrition Services Department didn’t have to order lettuce for approximately three months,” explained Darryl Philbin, assistant superintendent for operations. “Harvesting from the courtyard garden and serving in the cafeteria is not only amazing for our students, but it has definitely helped the bottom line.” Students are also raving about the fresh food. -

THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE COLLEGE OF INFORMATION SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGY DATA FUSION OF SECURITY LOGS TO MEASURE CRITICAL SECURITY CONTROLS TO INCREASE SITUATION AWARENESS MATTHEW KENNEDY SPRING 2018 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a baccalaureate degree in Security and Risk Analysis with honors in Security and Risk Analysis Reviewed and approved* by the following: Nicklaus A. Giacobe Assistant Teaching Professor of Information Sciences and Technology Director, Undergraduate Programs Thesis Advisor Dinghao Wu Associate Professor Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. ii ABSTRACT In Jan. 2018, a NIST draft to the Cybersecurity Framework called for the development of cybersecurity metrics, saying such work would be a “major advancement and contribution to the cybersecurity community (National Institute of Standards and Technology, 2017b).” Unfortunately, organizations and researchers continue to make little progress at measuring security. Along with this, research around measuring security fails to present detailed guides on how to implement security metrics collection and reporting in an organization. This research seeks to explore how measuring the CIS (formally SANS) Critical Security Controls, through data fusion of security logs, has the potential to increase situation awareness to strategic decision makers, and systems administrators. Metrics are built for each of the sub controls for Critical Security Control 8: Malware Defenses. Along with the development of these metrics, a proof of concept is implemented in a computer network designed to mimic a small business that is using Symantec Endpoint Protection and Splunk. A Splunk dashboard is created to monitor, in real time, the status of Critical Security Control 8.1 and 8.2. -

Garden Tasting Party Fun at Piney Woods Elementary Third-Graders Try Foods They Grew in School Garden
Garden Tasting Party Fun at Piney Woods Elementary Third-graders try foods they grew in school garden It’s not the kind of thing you expect to hear a third-grader say, but it was clear something new is growing at Piney Woods Elementary School during the October 21 Garden Tasting Party. “I really like kale chips and spinach,” said Karen Filippelli, a third-grader in Mrs. Vance’s class. “I didn’t think I did, but I really do Especially when I dip them in ranch dressing.” … Piney Woods has become the Mifflin Independent District’s first Growing Great pilot school. The cross-curricular program integrates science, nutrition, physical education, math, and as many other subjects as possible into garden-focused learning. Now in its second year, third grade has been the focus for the program, but Piney Woods is about to expand it to all grade levels. “I wasn’t sure about all this at first—there are a huge number of moving pieces,” Hudson said, “but I can honestly say this is one of the most transformative programs I’ve ever implemented.” What made Hudson change his mind? The program is driving success of all kinds all across the school. It has a sort of Midas touch in so many areas that its overall impact is undeniable. First, students plant and maintain the crops in the garden as part of their science curriculum. This has led to approximately a 10% increase in pass rates for third-graders last year, according to Holly Flax, the division’s director of science instruction. -

A 12- Drama man jury is sent to begin deliberations in the first-degree murder trial of an 18-year-old Latino accused in the stabbing death of his father - where a guilty verdict means an automatic death sentence. The case appears to be open-and-shut: The defendant has a weak alibi; a knife he claimed to have lost is found at the murder scene; and several witnesses either heard screaming - saw the killing or the boy fleeing the scene. Eleven of the jurors immediately vote guilty; only Juror No. 8 (Mr. Davis) casts a not guilty vote. At first Mr. Davis' bases his vote more so for the sake of discussion after all - the jurors must believe beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant is guilty.
