Revives Classic 1969 Portrait of “Johnny Cash: The Man, His World, His Music,” Tuesday, Aug. 5 on PBS Film Captures Cash on the Road, on Stage and Behind the Scenes Fresh on the Heels of His Breakthrough “Folsom Prison” Album; June Carter Cash, Bob Dylan, Carl Perkins Featured “…a rousing masterpiece.” – Rolling Stone Magazine When the Man in Black died in September 2003, he closed an original and captivating chapter in the great American songbook. Even as death approached, Johnny Cash displayed the hardscrabble grit, authentic individualism and knack for doing the unexpected that had made him an American icon — his powerful video cover of Trent Reznor’s “Hurt,” showing him visibly ailing but resolute, was nominated for six MTV Video Music Awards that year. It had been a long, maybe improbable, certainly American journey for a sharecropper’s son from Kingsland, Ark., and it had more ups and downs and surprising turns than a country road. In 1968, Robert Elfstrom (who went on to an award-winning career as a cinematographer and director) had the insight to make a documentary on Cash — and the luck to strike up a warm and candid rapport with the temperamental singer. By then, Cash, who had begun his career in the late ‘50s, had won over country music audiences with his uniquely intense "underdog" ballads, and was experiencing the first of several crossover successes with Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison.

Hank Marvin album HANK set for release 2nd June 2014 Submitted by: Bennett Public Relations Thursday, 10 April 2014 Hank Marvin, the legendary guitarist and modern day icon, who has inspired generations and garnered critical acclaim throughout his career for his work with The Shadows and as a solo artist, releases a long-awaited new studio album on 2 June 2014. Simply titled HANK, the album will be released on the DMG TV label. Featuring 14 tracks, HANK includes fresh interpretations of some of Marvin’s favourite summer-themed music, along with one new composition. It’s the first new release since 2007’s UK Top 10 Guitar Man, for the man whose legendary achievements were restated yet again in The Times in February 2014, when he was listed as Number 2, amongst the world’s greatest guitar players and The Shadows amongst the greatest groups! It’s been 60 years since the man who introduced the Fender Stratocaster to the UK, picked up his first musical instrument. Marvin’s performances as a solo frontman and with The Shadows on their records and backing Cliff Richard have resulted in millions of worldwide record sales. The Shadows’ monumental chart debut with Apache in 1960 started an incredible run of 13 UK Top 10 hits for the group in just 4 years, during which time their unmistakeable style became a household sound around the world. Hank and The Shadows ruled the charts during the early 1960s and as a solo artist from the late 1970s to the present day Hank Marvin has sold in excess of 6 million albums.

  • Johnny Cash by Dave Hoekstra Sept
Johnny Cash by Dave Hoekstra Sept. 11, 1988 HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. A slow drive from the new steel-and-glass Nashville airport to the old stone-and-timber House of Cash in Hendersonville absorbs a lot of passionate land. A couple of folks have pulled over to inspect a black honky-tonk piano that has been dumped along the roadway. Cabbie Harold Pylant tells me I am the same age Jesus Christ was when he was crucified. Of course, this is before Pylant hands over a liter bottle of ice water that has been blessed by St. Peter. This is life close to the earth. Johnny Cash has spent most of his 56 years near the earth, spiritually and physically. He was born in a three-room railroad shack in Kingsland, Ark. Father Ray Cash was an indigent farmer who, when unable to live off the black dirt, worked on the railroad, picked cotton, chopped wood and became a hobo laborer. Under a New Deal program, the Cash family moved to a more fertile northeastern Arkansas in 1935, where Johnny began work as a child laborer on his dad's 20-acre cotton farm. By the time he was 14, Johnny Cash was making $2.50 a day as a water boy for work gangs along the Tyronza River. "The hard work on the farm is not anything I've ever missed," Cash admitted in a country conversation at his House of Cash offices here, with Tom T. Hall on the turntable and an autographed picture of Emmylou Harris on the wall.

VIOLENT FEMMES AND THE TASMANIAN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA World Premiere Monday 22 & Tuesday 23 January Due to popular demand Mona Foma today announced an extra show for the world premiere of the Violent Femmes performing with the TSO. For two nights only, the Violent Femmes will take their acoustic punk-rock and work with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra to reimagine it as a full orchestra experience. Conducted by Hamish McKeich they’ll perform a long list of cult classics such as Add It Up, Blister In The Sun, Kiss Off, Gone Daddy Gone, American Song and Gimme The Car at The Federation Concert Hall on Monday 22 and Tuesday 23 January. “Most rock bands would blow off an orchestra with the amplifiers, but for these two shows we’re prepared to back off on the volume and actually play almost at the same volume as the orchestra musicians and create a more unified approach, “ said Brian Ritchie. The Violent Femmes were formed in 1981 as an acoustic band playing on the streets of Milwaukee. Their main influences at that time were Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps and The Velvet Underground. Enduring a couple of hiatuses throughout their 36-plus year career, the band — original members Gordon Gano and Brian Ritchie, along with drummer John Sparrow have been performing steadily since reuniting again in 2013. The TSO’s performance with the Violent Femmes represents another innovative collaboration for the orchestra, which in 2017 alone has seen sold out concerts with vocal star Kate Miller-Heidke, a Dark MOFO collaboration with Norwegian metal band Ulver, an original show with comedy trio Tripod and a sold out concert with ARIA award-winning and multi-platinum artist Megan Washington.

Founded and fronted of course by singer/ guitarist Gordon Gano and acoustic bass guitarist Brian Ritchie, the Milwaukee-born combo remains as warm, wise and weird as ever before, with such new favorites as “Another Chorus” and “Everlasting You” continuing to mine the vast range of ideas, melodic complexity and organic sonic craftsmanship that has characterized the band’s body of work since their landmark self-titled 1983 debut. “I think it’s probably the best [album] we’ve made since HALLOWED GROUND,” Ritchie says. “We didn’t really know that we had something to say, but it turns out that the songs are really good and we were able to sink our teeth into them and come up with something which is just as good as anything we’ve ever done. I’m even a little bit surprised myself.” Violent Femmes are undeniably one of the most inventive and original bands of this or any other era, constantly pushing forward with their singular blend of folk and punk, sarcasm and spirituality.
