  • The Big Bang: New Light on an Old Theory
Physics The Big Bang: New light on an old theory This lesson explores the evidence for the Big Bang theory of the origin of the Universe. In it, you will learn about the following: • Using the electromagnetic spectrum (EMS) to define radiation. • The Big Bang origin of the Universe theory. • What is the cosmic microwave background and how does this support the Big Bang theory? • Universe or Multiverse? Get ready for extragalactic time travel as we squeeze and bend our way through this space-time lesson. This is a print version of an interactive online lesson. To sign up for the real thing or for curriculum details about the lesson go to www.cosmosforschools.com Introduction: The Big Bang (P1) Scientists say they have just made a discovery that will help explain how our Universe began. If they are right, it could be the biggest, most exciting event in physics ever. Looking through a telescope into the clear skies over the South Pole, scientists spotted what they say is evidence of gravitational waves, or ripples in space-time, from the split second after the birth of the Universe – what scientists call the Big Bang. What’s got everyone so excited by this is that Albert Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves when he described how space and time were related and could be bent by huge forces of gravity. What the scientists at the South Pole think they saw was not gravitational waves – they would be invisible – but the effect of the waves on the light left over from the Big Bang.

CHRIS DORAN imaginethatwe have all had occasion to look up into the sky on a clear night, gaze at the countless stars, and think about how small we are in comparison to the enormity of the universe. For everyone except Ithe most strident atheist (although I suspect that even s/he has at one point considered the same feeling), staring into space can be a stark reminder that the universe is much grander than we could ever imagine, which may cause us to contemplate who or what might have put this universe together. For believers, looking up at tJotestars often puts us into the same spirit of worship that must have filled the psalmist when he wrote, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands" (Psalms 19.1).

  • The Effects of Nuclear War
The Effects of Nuclear War May 1979 NTIS order #PB-296946 Library of Congress Catalog Card Number 79-600080 For sale by the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office Washington, D C, 20402 — Foreword This assessment was made in response to a request from the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations to examine the effects of nuclear war on the populations and economies of the United States and the Soviet Union. It is intended, in the terms of the Committee’s request, to “put what have been abstract measures of strategic power into more comprehensible terms. ” The study examines the full range of effects that nuclear war would have on civilians: direct effects from blast and radiation; and indirect effects from economic, social, and politicai disruption. Particular attention is devoted to the ways in which the impact of a nuclear war would extend over time. Two of the study’s principal findings are that conditions would con- tinue to get worse for some time after a nuclear war ended, and that the ef- fects of nuclear war that cannot be calculated in advance are at least as im- portant as those which analysts attempt to quantify. This report provides essential background for a range of issues relating to strategic weapons and foreign policy. It translates what is generally known about the effects of nuclear weapons into the best available estimates about the impact on society if such weapons were used. It calls attention to the very wide range of impacts that nuclear weapons would have on a complex industrial society, and to the extent of uncertainty regarding these impacts.

National Park Service Teaching with Historic Places U.S. Department of the Interior Gold Fever! Seattle Outfits the Klondike Gold Rush Gold Fever! Seattle Outfits the Klondike Gold Rush (Special Collections, University of Washington Libraries, Curtis Photo, Neg. 26368) Seattle's Pioneer Square bustled with excitement as news of a major gold strike in Canada's Yukon River valley reached the port city during the summer of 1897. Soon eager prospectors from all over the country descended on Seattle to purchase supplies and secure transportation to the far-away gold fields. Newcomers were beset with information from every corner. Hawkers offered one sales pitch after another, explaining where to find lodging, meals, gambling, and other entertainment. Outfitters tried to entice prospectors into their stores to purchase the supplies necessary for the stampede north. Anticipating large crowds, these outfitters piled merchandise everywhere, including the sidewalks in front of their stores. One clever merchant opened a mining school where greenhorns could learn the techniques of panning, sluicing, and rocking before setting out for the gold fields. Some anxious stampeders headed directly for the piers where ships were ready to sail north, joining the great migration to the Klondike gold fields. The intense bustle and commotion of the Klondike Gold Rush dramatically changed the face of Seattle. National Park Service Teaching with Historic Places U.S. Department of the Interior Gold Fever! 1 Earthquakes in the United States Pre-Reading Discussion/Reading Before you read the passage, work with one or two other students to answer these questions. • Where do earthquakes occur? • What kinds of things happen during an earthquake? Now, read the passage. At 2 AM on December 16, 1811, the earth began to shake terribly in the southern United States. Hunters and farmers from Missouri to Arkansas jumped from their beds in terror. The log cabins they lived in turned to rubble. A distant roar came from the nearby forests. Large trees were torn from the ground as if they were nothing more than weeds. Great cracks appeared in the earth. The cracks were so wide that not even a horse could jump over them. Flashes of light and the burning smell of sulfur caused people to panic. Geysers of sand and dust spurted from the earth. Some people thought this was the end of the world. In reality, it was one of the strongest earthquakes ever to hit the United States. And it was not over. During the next several months, more quakes hit. The most violent came on February 7, 1812. Its strength on the Richter scale, which measures the power of earthquakes, was 8.4 to 8.8. A number that high (over seven) means complete destruction. During this earthquake, the town of New Madrid, Missouri, sank 15 feet. The shock was so powerful that windows rattled in Washington, DC, which was about a thousand miles away. When the earth finally stopped shaking, everything looked different. For a while, the Mississippi River was shaken so badly that water flowed backward.
