The exegesis analyses radical history, politics and historiography in the context of the “Narrative Wars” (“History Wars” and “Story Wars”). History, it is argued, can be understood as moving through a process of “value” drawn from a play of its meaning in both the social sciences and the arts. This is theorised as a “figurational tension”. It suggests a poetics for the imaginative use of literary devices through creative nonfiction for a radical historiography. Such a narrative has considerable potential for academic research in the pursuit of a popular or “vulgar” readership in the urgency of the power struggles which emerged from the Narrative Wars and their implications for a democratic culture. Tasmania, as an island society which has experienced brutal oppression, widespread repression and later vigorous political activism, is a case study for a “storyscape” of radical geo-identity. This theory is then applied through creative nonfiction in selected histories of radicals in Tasmania. These histories are structured as a geographical “tour” of the island’s radicalism. “Gonzo historiography” and other devices narrate the experiences of Aboriginal guerrilla women in the so-called “Black War”, tenant farmer resistance in the northern midlands, modern and postmodern communism, sexual liberation, a black Chartist and agitation by Vandiemonian emancipists, recent agitation for penal reform, “accidental champions” of feminism on the east coast, revolutionary unionists on the west coast and a resolution of cultural parapatry between “locals” and “in-movers” in the “forest wars” of Tasmania’s north east. ii Robert Hodder Radical Tasmania – Exegesis Statement of Authorship Except where explicit reference is made in the text of the thesis, this thesis contains no material published elsewhere or extracted in whole or in part from a thesis by which I have qualified for or been awarded another degree or diploma. Six interviewees were recorded on tape and with notes. Three interviewees were recorded by notes only because: one person refused to be taped, one person nominated a public area which had too much ambient noise for a tape recorder and on one occasion the tape recorder malfunctioned. All interviewees engaged enthusiastically with the project, offered constructive advice for the use of the material and/or requested amendments to the thesis draft and some offered further assistance. It was generally a positive and rewarding experience which provided crucial primary evidence for the project. I could think of men, I could think of iconic men, and I could think of them in limitless abundance, but none of them encapsulated everything I wanted to say.

    THE TERRITORY OF TRUTH and ‘WAYS OF SEEING’: THE TASMANIAN LANDSCAPE IN LITERATURE ANNA DONALD (19449666) This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The University of Western Australia School of Humanities (English and Cultural Studies) 2013 ii iii ABSTRACT The Territory of Truth examines the ‘need for place’ in humans and the roads by which people travel to find or construct that place, suggesting also what may happen to those who do not find a ‘place’. The novel shares a concern with the function of landscape and place in relation to concepts of identity and belonging: it considers the forces at work upon an individual when they move through differing landscapes and what it might be about those landscapes which attracts or repels. The novel explores interior feelings such as loss, loneliness, and fulfilment, and the ways in which identity is derived from personal, especially familial, relationships Set in Tasmania and Britain, the novel is narrated as a ‘voice play’ in which each character speaks from their ‘way of seeing’, their ‘truth’. This form of narrative was chosen because of the way stories, often those told to us, find a place in our memory: being part of the oral narrative of family, they affect our sense of self and our identity. The Territory of Truth suggests that identity is linked to a sense of self- worth and a belief that one ‘fits’ in to society. The characters demonstrate the ‘four ways of seeing’ as discussed in the exegesis. ‘“Ways of Seeing”: The Tasmanian Landscape in Literature’ considers the way humans identify with ‘place’, drawing on the ideas and theories of critics and commentators such as Edward Relph, Yi-fu Tuan, Roslynn Haynes, Richard Rossiter, Bruce Bennett, and Graham Huggan.

    90 Reproductive coercion and the Australian state: A new chapter? Patricia Hayes Victoria University While the concept of reproductive coercion is most commonly used in understanding tactics employed by some male perpetrators of violence against women, it is also used to identify policy and legislative environments of nation states that may be supportive of reducing women’s levels of autonomy and self-determination in relation to their reproductive health and family planning decisions. The offshore detention immigration policies of successive Australian governments have created several cases over the last decade where community workers in Australia have had to identify and understand how best to work with the power relations inherent in counselling work with women as asylum seekers who are making decisions about their pregnancies in the context of state-based reproductive coercion. The answer to working with this complex ethical issue lies beyond the scope of mere interpersonal and intra-psychic counselling interventions. stark. The capacity of women in offshore detention to provide ‘free and full consent’ to an ‘autonomous choice’ of either continuing their pregnancy or having an abortion is strongly compromised by their involuntary detention. It is worth remembering that this detention is mandatory and women are detained without proof of a crime being committed, the luxury of a trial or recourse to a timely appeal process, courtesy of the immigration policies of the Australian Government. Rambling in Overdrive: Travelling Through Tasmanian Literature CA Cranston Two years ago I published an anthology of original and published writings about Tasmania titled Along these lines: From Trowenna to Tasmania1 — a mistake it turns out (as far as the title goes) as readers generally assume that Trowenna is some other place, rather than some other time. The idea was to situate various texts about Tasmania into context, so that when traveling the arterial highways of the heart- shaped island one was presented with stories and histories (time) that live on the sides of the road (place). This paper will address the theme of the conference (‘Originally Tasmanian. Creativity and Innovation in the Island State’) with a methodology similar to that ‘driving’ the anthology. It will examine the relationship between context (the origin) and text (the representation), and by implication, the relationship between natural and symbolic worlds. The ramble, which textually refers to the discursive — ideas, like automobiles, that ‘run about’ — will be accommodated, and as such will occasionally disrupt normal expectations of chronology, the historian’s purview. The motivation for the anthology came out of a need to experience at first hand niggling doubts about the textual construction of the island. I was a migrant so (in terms of the conference theme) I’m not ‘Originally Tasmanian’. I was living in a biotic community I knew nothing about and for which I had no language. I was presented with a textual culture I knew little about, and I was hungry for island stories.

Exemplars and Influences: Transnational Flows in the Environmental Movement CHRISTOPHER ROOTES Centre for the Study of Social and Political Movements, School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research, University of Kent, Canterbury, UK Transnational flows of ideas are examined through consideration of Green parties, Friends of the Earth, and Earth First!, which represent, respectively, the highly institutionalised, the semi- institutionalised and the resolutely non-institutionalised dimensions of environmental activism. The focus is upon English-speaking countries: US, UK and Australia. Particular attention is paid to Australian cases, both as transmitters and recipients of examples. The influence of Australian examples on Europeans has been overstated in the case of Green parties, was negligible in the case of Friends of the Earth, but surprisingly considerable in the case of Earth First!. Non-violent direct action in Australian rainforests influenced Earth First! in both the US and UK. In each case, the flow of influence was mediated by individuals, and outcomes were shaped by the contexts of the recipients. Introduction Ideas travel. But they do not always travel in straight lines. The people who are their bearers are rarely single-minded; rather, they carry and sometimes transmit all sorts of other ideas that are in varying ways and to varying degrees discrepant one with another. Because the people who carry and transmit them are in different ways connected to various, sometimes overlapping, sometimes discrete social networks, ideas are not only transmitted in variants of their pure, original form, but they become, in these diverse transmuted forms, instantiated in social practices that are embedded in differing institutional contexts.
