Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. This includes all mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish, 137 families of vascular plants (over 15,000 species) and a range of invertebrate groups. From Latin ensatus, sword-like, referring to the flattened stems of this species. Conservation Not considered to be at risk in the wild. Status: General Description: Bossiaea is a genus of about 50 species all of which occur naturally only in Australia. They are found in all States and are small to medium shrubs. Bossiaea ensata Photo: Brian Walters Bossiaea ensata is a small shrub, often with a low, spreading habit and only rarely reaching about 1 metre high. It is generally leafless and has flattened, winged stems whose function takes the place of leaves (the leaves are actually reduced to small scales along the flattened stems). The stems are usually 3 to 10 mm in width (which distinguishes B.ensata from the similar B.scolopendria, which has winged stems up to 15 mm wide). True leaves are sometimes seen near the base of the plant or on juvenile stems - these true leaves are small and oval shaped. The flowers are yellow with a red centre and have the typical "pea" shape consisting of 4 petals; the "standard", the "keel" and two "wings", as shown in the diagram. They occur in the leaf "scales" in late spring and summer and are about 10-15 mm long. -

A REVISION OF THE GENUS TEMPLETONIA R.Br. (PAPILIONACEAE) by J. H. Ross* ABSTRACT The endemic Australian genus Templetonia is revised. Eleven species are recognized and the uncertainty concerning the application of the name T. sulcata (Meissn.) Benth. is discussed. This discussion includes the selection ol a lectotype for Bossiaea rossii F. Muell., a possible synonym. Descriptions, a key to the identification of species, illustrations, and distribution maps are provided, together with notes on ecology and relationships. Two previous papers describing T. incana (.Muelleria 4: 247-249 (1980)) and T. negketa (loc. cit. 390-393 (1981)) should be used in conjunction with the present revision. INTRODUCTION Templetonia, a small genus of 1 1 species described by R. Brown in Ait. f Hort. , Kew. ed. 2, 4: 269 (1812), was named in honour of the Irish botanist John Templeton (1776-1825) ot Orange Grove, Belfast. -

Most herbarium specimens have been collected from October to January. It is identifiable from vegetative characteristics. Bossiaea obcordata is found in very dry sites within dry sclerophyll forest in the north-east and on the East Coast of the State. It is often recorded with Eucalyptus sieberi (ironbark). -

Ross National Herbarium of Victoria, Royal Botanic Gardens, Birdwood Avenue, South Yarra 3141, Australia. Abstract An overview is provided of the Western Australian species of Bossiaea. Thirty-eight species are recognised of which the following are described here as new: B. arcuata, B. atrata, B. aurantiaca, B. barbarae, B. barrettiorum, B. calcicola, B. celata, B. eremaea, B. flexuosa, B. inundata, B. laxa, B. saxosa, B. simulata and B. smithiorum. Descriptions, distribution maps, and a key to identification are provided and most species are illustrated. Attention is drawn to a number of entities whose taxonomic status awaits clarification. Lectotypes are selected for B. concinna Benth., B. dentata (R.Br.) Distribution, Ecology and Conservation of the Endangered Shrub, Acacia Meiantha (Fabaceae) in Central West New South Wales

[email protected] Abstract: Acacia meiantha Tindale & Herscovitch, (Fabaceae) a low to medium shrub with root suckering, is only known to occur at three locations, Clarence, Carcalgong and Mullion Creek in Central West New South Wales. These disjunct populations each separated by >60 km, are considered as isolated subpopulations. A compilation of recent field surveys shows that of the 42,000 stem clusters/aggregates of Acacia meiantha estimated across the three geographic locations, the majority, 39,900 (96%) occur in the Mullions Range State Forest subpopulation, where 61% of clusters occur in the remnant native forest areas and 39% in the plantation forestry compartments. At Carcalgong 1,566 stem clusters were recorded along narrow roadside reserves. The Clarence subpopulation consists of < 400 stem clusters precariously situated among a confluence of road, railway and electricity power-line easements. Ecological observations of habitat are presented; information relating to genetic diversity, seed biology, reproductive biology and response to fire is found to be Data Deficient. The threatened species listing as Endangered under both State and Commonwealth legislation is warranted; the species does not occur on any conservation lands, has restricted distribution and abundance, and is vulnerable to ongoing threats. The area (AOO) and extent of occupancy (EOO) are calculated. It occurs at three locations (< 5), has an estimated EOO of 2,900 km2 (< 5,000 km2) and an AOO of 80 km2 (< 500 km2) (IUCN (2019) thresholds in brackets); there are significant threats to the extent and quality of habitats.
