    Slum Dwellers International (SDI) Skoll Entrepreneur(s): Jockin Arputham Award Year: 2014 Focus Area(s) Addressed: Education and Economic Opportunity, Water and Sanitation “Leading Slum Dwellers around the World to Improve Their Cities” In 2008—for the first time in history— more people were living in urban than in rural areas. Today, more than one billion people live in slums. Founded by a collective of slum dwellers and concerned professionals headed by Jockin Arputham, a community organizer in India, Slum Dwellers International works to have slums recognized as vibrant, resourceful, and dignified communities. SDI organizes slum dwellers to take control of their futures; improve their living conditions; and gain recognition as equal partners with governments and international organizations in the creation of inclusive cities. With programs in nearly 500 cities, including more than 15,000 slum dweller-managed savings groups reaching one million people; 20 agreements with national governments; and nearly 130,000 families who have secured land rights, SDI has been a driving force for change for slum dwellers around the world. Jockin Arputham is the president of the National Slum Dwellers Federation of India, which he founded in the 1970s. Often referred to as the “grandfather” of the global slum dwellers movement, Jockin was educated by the slums, living on the streets for much of his childhood with no formal education. For more than 30 years, Jockin has worked in slums and shanty towns throughout India and around the world. After working as a carpenter in Mumbai, he became involved in organizing the community where he lived and worked.

    Platform for the Poor (Interview of P. Sainath) By Ashok Mahadevan ill FOR A NEWSPAPER reporter who normally keeps a low profile, Palagummi Sainath was unusually visible in the media just before he talked to Reader's Digest. A fortnight earlier, he had received the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award for journalism, literature and the creative communication arts. Then he sparked off a row after criticizing Union Textiles Minister Shanker Sinh Vaghela and Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh for disparaging Maharashtra's cotton farmers—a charge both politicians predictably denied. In fact, we were lucky to find Sainath in his Mumbai home because he travels up to 10 months a year, chronicling the travails of India's poor. He's been doing this for nearly a decade and a half, and his reports reveal a country far different from the "India Shining" of the mainstream media. The economic reforms that began in 1991, Sainath says, while bringing unprecedented prosperity to the middle and upper classes have only deepened the misery of the poor. Sainath, 50, comes from a distinguished family—his grandfather, V. V. Giri, was the fourth President of India. After a master's in history from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Sainath became a journalist in 1980. In 1993, thanks to a fellowship from The Times of India, he investigated living conditions in the country's ten poorest districts. The articles he wrote during this period were collected in a best-selling book called Everybody loves a Good Drought. Sainath, now rural affairs editor of The Hindu, continues to specialize in writing about the poor because, as he puts it, "I felt that if the Indian press was covering the top five percent, I should cover the bottom five percent." Certain creative individuals and communities reject traditional values and prefer / pave a new innovative path. In South Asian countries the women, religious minorities, those coming from exploited classes and castes suffering at the hands of institutionalized oppressive structures are retaliating with affirmative action to the structural oppression and developmental discontent. The development models/ paradigms that have emerged from practical life situation are innovations of the deprived and have grown mostly out of people’s participation and people’s thirst for satisfaction. The ingredients of the above models are – a sense of emotional satisfaction to have actively participated, a sense of pride evolving solutions to the problems on hand and a sense of mental and physical achievement. Development here is assumed as a popular participatory process of sustainable social, spiritual and material advancement for emancipation and empowerment.

Courageous women in media Marcos and censorship in the Philippines Abstract: When Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos declared Martial Law in 1972, press freedom became the first casualty in the country that once boasted of being the ‘freest in Asia’. Printing presses, newspaper offices, television and radio stations were raided and padlocked. Marcos was especially fearful of the press and ordered the arrest of journalists whom he charged with conspiring with the ‘Left’. Pressured into lifting martial law after nearly 10 years, Marcos continued to censor the media, often de- manding publishers to sack journalists whose writing he disapproved of. Ironically, he used the same ‘subversive writings’ as proof to Western observers that freedom of the press was alive and well under his dictatorship. This article looks at the writings of three female journalists from the Bulletin Today. The author examines the work of Arlene Babst, Ninez Cacho-Olivares, and Melinda de Jesus and how they traversed the dictator’s fickle, sometimes volatile, reception of their writing. Interviewed is Ninez Cacho-Olivare, who used humour and fairy tales in her popular column to criticise Marcos, his wife, Imelda, and even the military that would occasionally ‘invite’ her for questioning. She explains an unwritten code of conduct between Marcos and female journalists that served to shield them from total political repression.
