Elegy, Op. 4/1 (First movement from the Symphonic Suite, Op. 4) 5:53 –2– Leevi Madetoja To be an orchestral composer in Finland as a contemporary of Sibelius and nevertheless create an independent composer profile was no mean feat, but Leevi Madetoja managed it. Though even he was not LEEVI MADETOJA completely immune to the influence of SYMPHONY NO. 2 his great colleague, he did find a voice for KULLERVO ELEGY himself where the elegiac nature of the landscape and folk songs of his native province of Ostrobothnia merged with a French elegance. Madetoja’s three symphonies did not follow the trail blazed by Sibelius, and another mark of his independence as a composer is that his principal works include two operas, Pohjalaisia (The Ostrobothnians, 1924) and Juha (1935), a genre that Sibelius never embraced. Madetoja emerged as a composer while still a student at the Helsinki Music Institute, when Robert Kajanus conducted his first orchestral work, elegy (1909) for strings, in January 1910. The work was favourably received and was given four further performances in Helsinki that spring. It is a melodically charming and harmonically nuanced miniature that betrays the influence of Tchaikovsky in its achingly tender tones. Later, Madetoja incorporated Elegia into his four-movement Sinfoninen sarja (Symphonic Suite, 1910), but even so it is better known as a separate number.

Prokofiev was renowned for his uncompromisingly direct behaviour. On one occasion he berated a famous singer saying – within the hearing of her many admirers – that she understood nothing of his music. Seeing her eyes brim, he mercilessly sharpened his tongue and humiliated her still further: ‘All of you women take refuge in tears instead of listening to what one has to say and learning how to correct your faults.’ One of Prokofiev’s long-suffering friends in France, fellow Russian émigré Nicolas Nabokov, sought to explain the composer’s boorishness by saying ‘Prokofiev, by nature, cannot tell a lie. He cannot even say the most conventional lie, such as “This is a charming piece”, when he believes the piece has no charm. […] On the contrary he would say exactly what he thought of it and discuss at great length its faults and its qualities and give valuable suggestions as to how to improve the piece.’ Nabokov said that for anyone with the resilience to withstand Prokofiev’s gruff manner and biting sarcasm he was an invaluable friend.

I see my music now as a synthesis of these elements, combined with what I learned from Grisey and the spectralists, and I detect from Kraft to my latest pieces the same underlying tastes and sense of drama.” – Magnus Lindberg The shift in musical thinking that Magnus Lindberg thus described in December 2012, a few weeks before the premiere of Era, was utter and profound. Lindberg’s composer profile has evolved from his early edgy modernism, “carved in stone” to use his own words, to the softer and more sonorous idiom that he has embraced recently, suggesting a spiritual kinship with late Romanticism and the great masters of the early 20th century. On the other hand, in the same comment Lindberg also mentioned features that have remained constant in his music, including his penchant for drama going back to the early defiantly modernistKraft (1985).

RAUTAVAARA RUBÁIYÁT, BALADA, CANTO V FOUR SONGS FROM RASPUTIN GERALD FINLEY MIKA POHJONEN HELSINKI MUSIC CENTRE CHOIR HELSINKI PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA JOHN STORGÅRDS 1 he process of musical composition is always a mysterious and essentially inexplicable thing. Einojuhani Rautavaara is one of the many composers to emphasise its unconscious dimensions, its T likeness to a mystery. He has often said that in the process of the birth of his compositions he is the midwife, not the mother; the mediator, not the creator. Sometimes the interval between impulse and implementation can be unexpectedly long. Rautavaara noted that he first came across the poetry of Persian mathematician, astronomer and philosopher Omar Khayyam (1048–1131) as a music student in his 20s in 1949 and immediately decided that he would one day set that poetry to music. But it took 63 years for him to act on that impulse: when Wigmore Hall in London commissioned him to write a song cycle for Gerald Finley, he responded with Rubáiyát (2014/15). The intervening decades span almost an entire human life and a brilliant career with a huge output in a succession of styles that has made Rautavaara one of the most frequently performed composers of our time. His development progressed from early Neo-Classicism to dodecaphony and serialist experiments in the late 1950s, then to a freer and more varied style often described as ‘Neo-Romantic’ or ‘post-modern’ in the late 1960s, and finally to his late style, a synthesis of all that had gone before. Through all this, the idea of setting Khayyam to music remained on the back burner.

MAGNUS LINDBERG VIOLIN CONCERTO PEKKA KUUSISTO, VIOLIN & DIRECTOR JUBILEES SOUVENIR MAGNUS LINDBERG, CONDUCTOR TAPIOLA SINFONIETTA 1 Magnus Lindberg 2 nstrumental qualities have always inspired Magnus Lindberg (b. 1958). However abstract his musical ideas may Ibe and however tightly constructed their subsurface structures, his music is always instrumentally idiomatic and powerful. Often his ideas develop in an instrumental direction of their own accord; sometimes they emerge from the special properties of a particular instrument, fusing musical and instrumental innovation into a single creative act. This approach is of course heightened in concertos, which constitute an important genre in Lindberg’s output. He has written two concertos for piano (1990–94; 2012) and one each for cello (1997–99), clarinet (2001–02) and violin (2006), and other works with prominent solo parts. The Violin Concerto was written to a commission from the Lincoln Center in New York together with the Barbican Centre in London, the Casa de Música–Porto and the Swedish Chamber Orchestra and was premiered at the Mostly Mozart festival in New York in August 2006. Although the commission was specifically aimed at the 250th anniversary celebration of Mozart’s birth, Lindberg did not write a tribute with Mozart elements in it. However, the situation of the premiere had an influence on the work in the way that Lindberg used a smaller orchestra than usual. There are two oboes, two bassoons and two horns plus strings – a standard Mozart orchestra, in fact. The very fact that the ensemble is so small prompted clearer and more translucent structures than in many of Lindberg’s other orchestral works.

  • Circle Map Program of Contemporary Classical Works by Kaija Saariaho to Feature New York Premieres Performed by the New York Philharmonic
Circle Map Program of Contemporary Classical Works by Kaija Saariaho to Feature New York Premieres Performed by the New York Philharmonic Site-Specific Realization by Armory Artistic Director Pierre Audi Conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen Two Performances Only - October 13 and 14, 2016 New York, NY — August 16, 2016 — Park Avenue Armory will present Circle Map, two evenings of immersive spatial works by internationally acclaimed Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho performed by the New York Philharmonic under the baton of its Marie-Josée Kravis Composer-in-Residence Esa-Pekka Salonen on October 13 and 14, 2016. Conceived by Pierre Audi to take full advantage of the Wade Thompson Drill Hall, the engagement marks the orchestra’s first performance at the Armory since 2012’s Philharmonic 360, the acclaimed spatial music program co-produced by the Armory and Philharmonic. A program of four ambitious works that require a massive, open space for their full realization, Circle Map will utilize the vast drill hall in an immersive presentation that continually shifts the relationship between performers and audience. The staging will place the orchestra at the center of the hall, with audience members in a half-round seating arrangement and performances taking place throughout. Longtime Saariaho collaborator Jean-Baptiste Barrière will translate the composer’s soundscapes into projections that include interpretations of literary and visual artworks from which inspiration for specific compositions are drawn. “Our drill hall is an ideal setting and partner for realizing spatial compositions, providing tremendous freedom for composers and performers,” said Rebecca Robertson, President and Executive Producer of Park Avenue Armory.
